Is Jetstar The World's Worst Airline?

Hi All,

As reported in the media today
"An international study has ranked Qantas’s low-cost carrier Jetstar as the worst airline out of 73 surveyed, with angry passengers listing lengthy delays, boarding, onboard staff and quality of meals as their biggest irritations."

http://www.9news.com.au/amp/world/2017/04/28/10/16/jetstar-w…

I personally have flown with Jetstar many times, I found that they are reasonable in term of the service, time performance and fares.
They have beat the price by 10% guarantee policy which is very handy for me since I need to pay 4 tickets at once every time we travel 😁😁😁😁

Personally, I don't believe that Jetstar should be the worst airline in the world.
Surely, there is another airline which is worse than Jetstar…

What do you think?

    Not even close.

To operate an airline company out of Australia you have to adhere to strict aviation safety standards, airlines operating out of other poverty-stricken and corrupt countries are not held to the same standards and level of accountability.

      • +8

Do they fly hire than the other airlines?

    • +1

Dam, Yep not even close….. Not even in the same league as Bilman Bangledesh. I have yet to see something close to that level on the international scene. I flew may times with them as they were literally half the price of the closest competition. Highlights: having a 727 fly <100m over us coming into land in Dakar, the unrestrained kids running around during landing, the manditory night or nights in Dakar, the oil stains all over the plane. Did like the in flight curries and the whole cabin clapping on landing.
Air Lao would be a domestic contender (15 yrs ago anyways) last flight with them a lady had live chicken carry on.
I actually really like Cebu pacific but get a neg vote for the gratuitous use of deplaning, deplaneing, disembarkation and reembarcation.

  • +4

They do delay and cancel alot, but mainly due to running on bare bone staff levels. When one calls in sick, they fall below nessesary staff levels.

    • +11

And that makes it okay to have delays? Perhaps they could hire more staff if that is an issue so people aren't waiting hours for flights…

      • Exactly.

      • +2

I'm not saying it's ok, the complete oposite in fact. Even a buffer of 2 people would help in sickies (2 still call in sick, plane still goes, no sickies, customers get better service). But it means ticket prices go up.

      • +15

That's just the nature of a low cost carrier. If you want less delays, pay more to fly with a full service airline.

      • It makes it perfectly ok. That's why they're low cost carrier.

You don't want to wait hours for flight ? Go to a full Service airline.

    • +1

They cancel if they can merge 2 flight, even if it spans across 2 days.

I don't recall having my ass thoroughly whoopped or my stuff destroyed any of the times I travelled with jet star.

There are so many airline awards that you have to take each of them with a grain of salt, however the typical Aussie media just jumps on a story like this without any real research or information. There are well over 5,000 airlines registered with the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), so a survey with a list of 73 is laughably small.

    • +3

Almost all of the awards are bs. They are sponsored by airlines a lot of the time and some airlines even email all of their staff encouraging them to vote even if this is not supposed to be allowed.

  • We flew them as a family for the first time from Melbourne to Tokyo. In the lead up to the flight I was extremely worried about the experience.
We had an infant and requested the bassinet like you do on any other airline. It was only by chance I was talking to them on a different matter to be informed in order to get the bassinet you need to pay $150 for seat upgrade. This is not mentioned anywhere on the website or T&C's, so I was quite pissed. they gave us vouchers so it ended up only being $50 out of pocket for us.
In the end we were happy to be in that front section of economy and the flight wasn't too bad (as long you are not drinking).
The only annoying thing is for a young family, the 'essential' upgrades make it the same cost as a premium airline, with not as good service. But no means the worst airline I have ever travelled.

    • +2

Ever since we had kid we always flew full serviced airline. But prior to that we flew Jetstar countless time and never had significant problem. In fact, when we had a flight cancelled, we expected them to tell us to wait for next flight. But instead they put us on a Qantas flight with a similar departure time. We had no complaint then!

But this was 5-7 years so not sure how much things have changed.

  • +2

It only takes 1 incident with a customer to turn that customer into a hater - my gripe with Jetstar on my last flight with them was a "last minute" (as the plane was boarding) weigh in of hand luggage (ALL ITEMS COMBINED NOT JUST THE SMALL CARRY ON CASE), I was over by around 1kg so had the joy of either paying $50 or missing the flight. I had paid for checked baggage which I hadn't used as I figured my hand luggage was about right - turns out it wasn't right and I had to pay another $50. Turned me into an instant Jetstar hater.

    • +3

Should of told them to check it in rather than pay $50.

      • -2

They announced the surprise weigh in immediately after closing off checked bags and announced this - so either pay or don't board.

        • +5

          Lol.

You were late, and over the carry on limit. This limit was predefined since the beginning of time, as was the check in luggage closing time.

How the heck does this have anything to do with Jetstar at all.

Instead of being entitled how about own up to your own mistakes?

    • This is part of the reason that turned me off Prague. Our combined bags were underweight but the last bag put on the scale was a bit over so they charged us excess baggage. (Of course the others had already gone down the chute so we couldn't reorganise - if I'd been thinking I would've hauled things out and worn them). I used part of my remaining local currency buying a luggage weight scale and we made sure we weighed the bags before we went to the airport during the trip. We will always travel with one now and we always weigh the bags.

      • +2

        Why is this Prague's fault?

        • It happened in Prague and was the last piece in a number of annoyances we had there. Not saying it is their fault, just that it is part of the reason I was turned off it. This was the only airport we had this issue occur.

        • +1

@try2bhelpful: Fair enough, though its not a Prague thing - it's a global thing which applies to pretty much any airline. If you already had issues it makes sense for it to be the icing on the cake though.

        • @callum9999: yeah, the clock was under plastic, there was a soccer match so there were drunken yobs everywhere, we went on a 10 hour trip to the winter palace where we only had 2 hours to see the palace. Just too many bad experiences when we had already gone to a lot of other places that were better. I think my comment was more in relation to the previous person who had the issue with Jetstar and to indicate to people to buy a pair of portable luggage scales, they may save you money in the long run.

        • +1

@try2bhelpful: I just use normal scales - either in the hotel or at an empty check in desk at the airport. Saves carrying them around with you! I'm very rarely at/above the limit though.

        • @callum9999: not a boy scout but "be prepared". The luggage scales are tiny and I can sort myself out in the hotel room before we checkout. Once bitten twice shy.

    • +7

So you are basically having a gripe about Jetstar because you didn't adhere to their carry-on baggage polices? Sounds like you were in the wrong, not sure why that is Jetstar's fault? Especially when they make their baggage polices very clear.
What's the difference, 1kg over, or 10kg over, you are still over. Where do you expect them to draw the line?

      • +3

I may well have been in the wrong, but I felt it unfair to close off check baggage and then announce the weigh in - then weigh ALL bags (not just the carry on case but also a shoulder satchel), I had been sitting around the gate for 30-40 mins prior twidling my thumbs. I admit fault and admit the rules are clear, but I still harbour resentment towards the airline for the manner in which they went about enforcing their agreed conditions, I felt it was unfair. I wasn't having a gripe I was simply stating that 1 incident can turn someone off an airline. In my instance I was turned off Jetstar as a carrier by this one incident.

They could have either checked my bag (per how they allow kids strollers to be checked at the gate after baggage has closed) or let me off with a wink and a nudge or asked me to pay $50, they chose to ask for the $50, which I guess is their right, but it is also my right to not fly with them again because I feel aggrieved by the manner in which they apply their rules.

EDIT: I realise I used the word gripe in my original reply.

        • You said you even paid for checked baggage…. is that jetstars fault as well?

        • +1

then weigh ALL bags (not just the carry on case but also a shoulder satchel)

Were you carrying both bags on or not? I don't understand your thought process - why should you get an extra unweighed bag?

Why should a "carry on case" be subject to weighing but not "a shoulder satchel"? Sounds like 2 bags to me.

Personally I wish all airlines applied their carry on limits all the time. I'm sick of missing out on overhead locker space because everyone is carrying a suitcase, a handbag/laptop, a jacket, and 2 bags of shopping.

    • This! I had the same occur and I was flying on a Qantas ticket (code share). Flew to my destination with the exact bag, last leg flying home was a Jetstar flight. Last minute weigh in, pay the fee even though I had a checked baggage allowance. They even had a 'special' weigh in attendant who took an abrupt and rude tone.

I generally avoid Jetstar these days from this experience, along with frequently cancelled flights in the past.

    • +1

yeah… stuff like that is ridiculous.

Is it worth pissing off a customer for life for 1kg?

      • If someone is getting pissed off that they went over a 'limit' and they were not allowed to go over this 'limit' even though they agreed to the 'limit', chances are they are going to get pissed off at the next slight breeze anyway.

There are times when staff are overstrict and should just let things go in order to make a customer happy and for repeat business. Then there are times the customer is being unreasonable going over a clearly predefined amount that they agreed to through contract and then acting as if they were entitled to it when they are told no.

  • +6

Tigerair crew are certainly more friendlier if we are talking about low cost domestic carriers. I always seem to have a more pleasant and relaxing journey with Tigerair when compared to Jetstar.

    • Tigerair is utterly crap. Cancelled my girlfriends flight after making everyone wait 8 hrs at the terminal. Return home flight was delayed by 4 hours.

    • +2

Tiger is trash. When flight delays or cancellations are not a surprise anymore you know it's a recurrent issue.

  • +1

Personally i found their international services to be ok.
sadly i cant say the same about their domestic services.
would gladly pay the extra 30-50 to hop on a Virgin domestic flight.

  • +8

We were left waiting by Jetstar in Cairns for 6+ hours with no info, seating or a/c in the terminal.
When a Jetstar manager noticed the kids crying and trying to sleep on the floor, they bumped us up the queue and bussed us to a pub next to a strip joint at midnight for accommodation - which was booked out.
I realise Jetstar dumping a five year old girl in the gutter outside a strip club is not the worst airline story in the world, but this level of service is completely unacceptable in Australia.

I think Jetstar deserves the title

  • I've never had a problem with Jetstar but then I've never had a problem with Tiger, or Acer for that matter. Just lucky I guess.

    • -4

Or, you've never flown with Jetstar, Tiger or owned an Acer.

  • -1

Worst airline ever! Will not fly with them if delays are not an option! Massive gamble booking a flight with them and not knowing if your flight will get cancelled a few hours before scheduled take off….

  • +2

I flew Jetstar from Melbourne to Bali, Tokyo, Queenstown, Hobart etc.. And never had any problems with them…

    • Me too.
We've flown to Bali multiple times, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines with Jetstar.
      Never had any real problems.
They are a low-cost carrier so you have to accept everything that goes along with that - but they have always gotten us to where we need to go.

  • +1

Jetstar is fine. Air Koryo maybe the worst airline in the world http://www.news.com.au/travel/world-travel/asia/this-is-the-…

    • +1

I've flown Air Koryo and it beats Virgin and Jetstar and that's saying something. Friendly service and great meals.

  • +2

United is the worst airline in the world.

    • +1

Rule 1. We never speak about fight club.

  • Definitely. In my experience they are just that 1 star. I have eaten many in flight meals and Jetstars was the worst. I couldn't eat it of course but they did make the food I ate in Bali look like a banquet compared to the slop I received from them. Not to mention the rude flight attendants! Again, this is my experience.

  • on the longer domestic leg after all the add ons, baggage and food. Almost cost as much as their bigger better sibling. Not much value for money.

  • +4

I can understand the poor food, service etc but how do they get away with continually cancelling flights? You think they would be hit with some pretty big penalties for that one. This is an airline, not a bus service.

  • +1

I don't think the survey was done in a way to say "world's worst". Limited sample from limited number of countries, limited number of airlines, limited this limited that, so the survey has a limit on what it can say.

  • +8

This is yet another example of the continuous stream of steaming horseshit that commercial news has become. You are discussing something that has been made up to sell advertising space.

You are worse off for having consumed this horseshit. If you decide to stop consuming commercial news you will have a period of about 3 weeks where you experience symptoms much like those of smokers and gambling addicts quitting (although the intensity is less) and after that you're life will be improved in a small but meaningful way.

  • +6

Jetstar "We beat prices, not our customers"

From experience, Jetstar is no where near the worst…If you have ever had an internal flight within Cambodia or Pakistan, holy (profanity). You will be wishing it was Jetstar.

  • +3

This is quite ridiculous, and a good indication of why customer reviews and surveys are sometimes completely worthless. The worst airline out of 73? Really?

Is a cancelled flight, or a scowl from a grumpy J* steward really enough to make it "the worst in the world"? I have flown J* many times and generally the experience has been fine. First and foremost for any airline is safety. How many fatal incidents has J* had? Zero. Has J*'s license in Australia ever been suspended? No. Tiger has, in 2011, due to pilot training issues.

The other way to look at this survey is that no matter how good companies are, one will always be at the bottom of the list and bitching hard about it.

    • Just because there have been no crashes ( which is rare in a heavily regulated industry) does not mean there has been no incedents. Look up jetstars near miss record and decide. I kinda think a Jetstar plane fully loaded with passengers almost landing ontop of a international flight that was also fully loaded as a huge incident and this was less than 12 months ago.

But all in all it comes down to the experience you receive on the day. One staff member going through a break up and taking it out of customers can ruin the whole companies reputation to that one customer. But it goes both ways one staff member being extra nice can make them seem amazing.

  • Where is the option, I don't fly on budget airlines? :)

    • gtfo and hand over your OzB badge! :)

      • +1

I like the "tongue in cheek" comment but Ozbargain should be about "value" not just about "cost". I've never flown a budget airline myself because I weigh up the benefits Vs the cost and make a choice based on merit. (I also don't tend to fly within Australia much so my flight times are usually substantial so a few bucks more can mean a lot more comfortn). My big turn off is the cancellation of flights at the last minute. If I've already arranged accomodation, tours, intersecting transport then the few bucks saved is a nightmare if you have to rebook and/or lose deposits, incur cancellation fees, etc. I can live with cramped accomodations, rubbish food and paying for checked luggage if these sods would guarantee they will fly when they say they will.

      • flying on Jetstar or Tiger is not really bargain when you consider service, delay and uncertainty.
What I consider bargain when paying discount rate on full service airlines. :)

  • +1

I fly Jetstar a lot and mostly they are OK. Had a few rescheduled flights, not always convenient. I don't eat the food and yes the stewards are grumpy. But for safety at a budget price, I will continue to use them. Pricebeat is great and so are their sales. Flew return to Japan a couple of years ago for $380 in Dreamliner, not going to complain!

    • +1

Interesting isn't it that Jetstar had one of the LOWEST percentages of cancellations in March, with QantasLink and Virgin considerably worse.

And looking at the stats for the whole of 2016, cancellation rate is same as Virgin and considerably less than QantasLink. Make of that what you will…

    • Jetstar The World's Worst based on service not just cancellation.
I have flown equal amount of Qantas and Virgin flights and experience few cancellations from Virgin but they handle it well by either re scheduling or free upgrade.
So I still have no issues over the flight cancellation and most of them are due to bad weather or power outage in terminals.

  • Can't comment on their international flights, but flown domestic with Jetstar a few times and never had a problem.

Even commend them on the time that they change my flight for free 2 hours before take off, because I couldn't make it to the airport due to flooding. Apparently they adapt most of Qantas' rules, and one of them is that if you can't make it due to flooding they will change you for free. Called them up, and changed it for a couple of days later, no fees at all.
And yes the planes were all flying, I just couldn't get to Townsville because of a tropical storm that came down through the Gulf and put a lot of water in the Goldfields regions. The Burdekin and Star rivers alone were over 10m above the bridges. I can't remember which one, but one was 17m over the bridge.

  • That survey was either limited to the "entitled" me's or should be rebadged to "The Most Inconvenient Airline". Sheesh what a pile of rubbish.

    • I've noticed that about Choice. From the stuff that they review and recommend they seem to be yuppies who are not particularly bothered by price or interested in bargain-hunting.

  • +1

It's an "international" study but excludes any Asian carriers. They would have more representative results if they included these countries and kept the sample size at 11000. Jetstar is definetly not as bad as Garuda and Scoot in my opinion. Still waiting on refunds from Scoot, and from their facebook, looks like many are as well. Jetstar also has it's own staff at counters, which is more helpful than contractors.

  • +3

I flew with them from Melb to home in Bris after christmas. It was myself and my 3 kids (who were given buckets of presents). out 2 suitcases were 20kgs + 31kgs (i had paid for 20 + 25) after moving the heavier stuff to my carry on the suitcases were 20 + 28. 3kgs over, not a big difference but still chargable $$$. At the weigh in belt I looked at the jetstar lady and straight out said "I'm travelling alone with 3 kids could you cut me some slack?". she smiled and said "sure" and put through with no extra charge. thanks for being decent Jetstar.

I've flown with them to Japan and Hawaii and both times were fine.

  • Jetstar's fine. Just treat it like a bus ticket. You get on for a short flight on a clean but small seat. That's all you're paying for, really.

It's nowhere near as bad as Olympic, Ryanair or some of the regional SEA airlines. Then there are airlines like Air Koryo or some African ones which actually do use ancient Soviet-era craft that sometimes break down. Makes all the Jetstar comparisons seem trivial.

  • Heard Kogan Air will soon be making an appearance.

  • +1

Jetstar are fine, domestically they really are in a market all to themselves now that Virgin seem to have moved more into the full service space to compete directly with Qantas. Sure there's Tigerair but does that even count?
I've flown them many times domestic, and two overseas holidays, the experience was perfectly fine for the I price paid.

The worst part about Jetstar is that moment you're sitting in your seat just after boarding, and there's that singlet clad guy walking down the aisle with absolutely putrid BO, and you're praying he's not seated next to you. I swear they're on on every Jetstar flight no matter the season or destination!

  • +1

    Pegasus airways Kyrgyzstan
    Air kamikaze Burma
    Gmg airlines bangladesh

Flown them all, no safety at all

  • Lets face it - Jetstar will never be ranked as one of the world's best airlines or even near the top of that list simply because they are a "budget airline".

There are many loud and unreasonable customers who pay half (or even just a small fraction!) of what it would cost on a non-budget airline and expect five-star service or whinge about the additional luggage fees etc when they are forced to pay extra to check-in their overloaded or oversized carry-on luggage.

What do those customers do when they realise that not everything is going to go their way? They complain and complain and complain.
There will definitely be some legitimate complaints, but the majority of them will be from these "entitled" customers.

There's a reason why budget airlines can charge so much less than other airlines - something's got to give.

    • There's a different category for budget airlines by World Airline Awards and AirAsia have won it for many consecutive years…

      http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards/worlds_best_lowcost…

      • +1

It doesn't really make sense for Jetstar to be the "world's worst airline" and then come second, third, fourth or fifth in the other airline categories. haha

      • AirAsia X had an interesting incident climbing out of Sydney in 2015. The pilots used a non standard way to input GPS coordinates into the navigation computer and didn't notice the error on subsequent checks. Basically ignored standard operating procedure.

        http://avherald.com/h?article=482f868f

The result was a completely confused aircraft and crew. The aircraft thought it was 11,000km away from its real location. Ultimately the incident ended safely, but you have to wonder about pilot training.

  • +1

I disagree. I catch Jetstar/Tiger domestically fairly often and barely see a difference. My typical flight involves: go to the airport, wait for plane, get on plane, fall asleep, wake up, in another city. Why are people even complaining about quality of meals on a budget carrier? Furthermore I don't really see what can be done about delays. E.g. one of my flights was cancelled because some birds decided to fly into the engine, then jetstar offered everyone a rescheduled flight/accomodation. They couldn't have done anything better

  • +1

Umm, what do you expect paying those prices?

Yes, they are sometimes terrible - But you get what you pay for. Is this some how surprising?

  • +1

This is complete BS, Tiger today just cancelled my mid afternoon flight out of Melb to Adelaide to a first thing in the morning one. My Jetstar Adel to melb, unchanged.

EAD Tiger!!!! And this POS survey!!!

  • United airlines is the worst as seen in the last 3 years and more in the past month including the dragging of a passenger event and the death of the child of the world's largest rabbit.

  • +1

I fly with Jetstar a fair bit as well as the other carriers. Only a storm has stopped my flight before. Sometimes they run half hour late but seem to make some time back during the flight.

They aren't always the cheapest - varies so much depending when you book, times, places ect. Best thing about virgin and qantas is the included drink and snack as the very least. Plus entertainment. And they included a checked bag.

Best thing about Jetstar though is you pay for weight for checked in baggage. Instead of paying per checked in bag.
So you can have multiple bags checked in if they're under the weight purchased. Can combine the weights together of multiple people for this too.

    • Combining weights is a big plus. I didn't know about this until we flew recently. When self checking our bags in at Melbourne I was surprised to see that it added my groups 20kg limits together. I'll know for next time, not that I like to lug more than 20kgs around usually.

Did anyone notice any Virgin advertising after announcement of this news? Just asking. This is the type of marketing ploy in favour in this day and age.

As for "World's Worst", what's Aeroflot like these days…

  • ony my last airasia flight i was told i couldnt eat non-airline food that i brought on to the plane. i was halfway through my burger!
jetstar hasnt done that to me so they win
(i scarfed it down when they left so all good)
(also i may have been sitting in the exit row without paying the premium so suck it airasia)

  • as with anything online, you mainly hear the negative, no one goes out of their way to praise a company. i have flown with jetstar many many times over the past few years, and (touch wood) have not had a single, single incident? no delays, no tantrums, havent been tied up and thrown off a flight

actually i lie, on my most recent trip, the self baggage check in system glitched out for about 2 minutes, then it came back online and all good. and once again, no one threw a tantrum, it was business as usual.

tip to take away from all this: dont listen to much to what the media has to say, they need to fill their DAILY columns with a lot of crap, so they exaggerate quite a bit.

  • Thanks Jetstar, for cheap airfares to Japan! Though, I wish they still had direct flights from Brisbane to Osaka. I've flown with Jetstar many times and never had any problems, other than the occasional rude staff.

  • United airlines is I hear

  • Flew Jetstar in January to Melbourne and it was all good. It did take some time to forgive them for delaying us in Bali on Christmas Eve for four hours sitting at the wrong gate and with no communication on when the flight would depart and if we should be stocking up on water, making a bed out of hand luggage. No news was given to us until five minutes before boarding at the mystery time.

  • Why would the most el-cheapo no-frills budget airline have more flight delays and cancelled flights than the most high-end super expensive airline? I don't see the connect.

  • +4

The title should read "Is this The World's Worst Airline study?"

  • +2

Wonder if Ryanair was excluded from this survey/research? They are the worst!
