Recommend a joint bank account for GF & I

Hi,

Can anyone recommend one with little to no fees?

I currently use Bankwest, all my accounts have no transaction fees, however I think I need to deposit $2k a month in order to achieve that for my regular account (Easy Transaction account)

Initially the account will be used to pay rent, electricity, internet and possibly some groceries.
I am thinking it would be nice to also be a debitcard / master debit card or visa debit card as well as a regular cash withdrawl ATM style account.
(yes, I trust her)

Please note, I'm not dumb, we're not moving all our income together or anything, this is just kind of a trial run account, we both deposit an amount of money per month from our personal accounts, which is shared for the bills.

Any ideas?

    none.
how long have you been together?

    • +1

      I'm nearly 40, she's nearly 30.
No savings going in there, just money each month for bills. This is a trial run account. Over 2/3 of my wage goes into my personal account over 2/3 of her wage goes into her personal account.

      Relax.

LOL i thought you were the usual 19-20 year old asking the question!
        do it bro.

        • Yeah I get you man, nah this is all legit.

        • Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm 22 and so is my girlfriend. We have a joint account that we deposit $x/month into and we use that money whenever we go out. Anything that's left over at the end of the month goes into our joint savings account. Don't chuck us all in the same basket.

          @nurries:
i think you missed it the age group.
          i said 19-20…

        • @tuzii:

Yeh, I completely assumed you were just generalising anyone under 25. My bad!

          @nurries:
i could be over 20 but under 25 so no generalising. :)

      • Hah you sly dog, you ;)

    • "none"

I agree. Joint bank accounts are a relic of the past when internet banking didn't exist.

These days, there's literally no reason to have joint bank accounts unless you want to sponge off your partner.

She's Californian and I need to provide clear evidence to the Australian government in 12 months that we're together. This is hugely helped with joint bank accounts and names being put on bills (elect / internet etc)
        Hence I've done that.

Who knows it could go pear shaped but if it doesn't I'm then prepared to speak with the gov about her becoming a real citizen.
(I didn't bother putting this in the topic as it would just complicate things and in the end of the day, all I need is the account)

Ah I see, that's a bit different then. Hope the citizenship goes well.

  • Other banks do have fee free accounts without any deposit requirements, just that you don't earn any interest on the balance and also it takes a few days to clear any funds from your Bankwest account. The ones that I know of are:

ING has zero fees including instant refunding of any ATM fees.

    • You need to deposit $1000 each month for free ATM from memory.

      • In one payment or total? We'd definitely exceed that - probably $1300 deposit.

Do you guys know, is a joint account different from regular?
(As in, can I get ANY old account and just say "this is for 2 people, so I need 2 copies of that ATM / debit card" ?)

or does it have to be a specific account type?

My wife and I recently opened a joint with ING. Basically, you just open the account, then when you login, there is a joint application thing, you put in your gf's details and she will get an email, she logs in and follows the steps, then two cards will be sent out.

        • You have to deposit $1000 in total in the preceding month, then the following month has free ATM.

I'm doing this from memory but it's on their website if you're interested.

I use ubank, x money gets deposited into the saving account per month by my partner and I, and direct debits (rent, electricity, internet etc.) get taken out from the transaction account. The automatic transfer from the savings account saves a ton of time that would normally be spent micro-managing the account.

    • That would be very handy.

None of the banks I use offer that and I cannot see any reason other than making it inconvenient for their customers means they make a little more as some people pay bills from elsewhere and their money stays in savings for the bank to use.

      • i think most of the banks has that automatic transfer function. You just need to set it up one time and it will be all good for the rest. I did it with my ANZ and ING accounts. Regarding the direct debits for the payment of utilities, you can just give them the right BSB and acct number for the transaction acct. Transaction acct and savings acct have different acct numbers even though they are link together. You just have to choose the right one.

        • We aren't talking about bank to bank transfers, we're talking about scheduling transfers from savings accounts. I'm not going to give utilities authorisation to direct debit because they already behave like criminals.

        • @Diji1: yes, it's possible. Just log in your internet banking and do it from there..sometimes mobile app has limited functionality which hinders you from doing it.

        • @angelkulit025: OK whatever.

        • +2

@angelkulit025: The part that differs from ubank, is that you don't need to make sure you have x in your transaction account for a direct debit to be successful, if the transaction account does not have x, it transfers the difference from the savings account. So you have the benefit of not being required to make sure you have x in your account before each direct debit. It automatically will grab it from your linked ubank savings account. So the bulk of your money will be getting a good interest rate, without you having to micromanage the account.

ING is great but madmouse58 made a good point. With ING, which has a much better website than UBank, you need to have the funds for direct debits in the Orange account beforehand. If you want to take advantage of the 3% interest on the Saving Maximiser you would need to transfer the money over when bills are due. Alternatively keep a large sum in Orange and just transfer excess once per month to Maximiser. The $1000 deposit can occur in several lots and does not have to be salary, as they suggest. It is great not having to search out ATM's as you can use ALL for free. The website is really excellent. Call centre is in Australia. UBank is currently 2.87%.
