What Are Some 'Must-Have' Sony RX100 Accessories?

Hi guys, thanks to your votes on a poll I posted up last week, I ended up pulling the trigger and buying an RX100-III. I'm now asking an open question to camera owners and more specifically RX100 owners.

What are some of the essential accessories I should invest in and where should I be looking to buy them?

Also, what are your thoughts on third party batteries? Looking online, I can't really justify the $69 Official Sony batteries. I'm not sure on how trustworthy these third party batteries are and want to prolong the longevity of the camera. I've heard of cheap external chargers catching fire in some extreme cases.

Thanks for your input!

When I had the RX100, I found it kinda slippery in the hands since its made from metal. Bought the Attachment Grip and stuck it on and it worked wonders for handling. It is massively overpriced at $19 for literally a piece of rubber.

The offical Sony batteries are way overpriced but do work the "best" getting the most milage out of them. I never bought any for the RX100, but since getting the A7ii I bought some at spares from Better Batt for a fraction of the price and they do its job in being spares. I tend to use the Offical Sony one until its dried up and then use the spares. The battery size may not be as big in mAh but you cant complain for its bargain price. They ship fast too.

Dont forget about a SD card or Micro SD card with SD card adapter.
The RAW files tend to be approximately 20MB if you intend to shoot in RAW. The JPGs were around 3-5MB.

A screen protector may also be of interest for you. I bought the offical one to protect it. It got pretty scratched up but then again I was rough on it for when I had it for travels.

NEVER use Micro SD card with SD card adapter in your camera :)

      • What's the reason for this? I'd assume it may be slower?

Between every photos taken, you have to allow certain time for camera to save the photos after taken, not like normal high speed SD card, you can just keep taken, otherwise it will crash, I lost 700 plus photos in my trip to Scandinavia last year, please do google search :)

        • @Marcsie: That's not necessarily true, that's dependent on the type of card you're using, whether it is a fast rated or a generic one like Sandisk Extreme vs Ultra or Samsung Evos vs Pro. Micro SD vs SD is really just form factor these days if you're looking at the same type of card for either SD or micro SD. There are microSD cards rated for 4K that need to write so much data as well. Years ago SD cards had more capacity and speeds, but these days they are "on par". Adapters used are passive, no other parts except metal contacts. If these fail, they don't affect the micro SD. it just stops working, the card itself still works.

Cards do fail, you can expect that to happen with every card just like USB thumb drives fail. Always have a backup.

I was in the Himalayas and had a MicroSD card with an adapter. Went through all sorts of extremes - high altitude, cold weather - snow, winds. Took over 2400 shots (Samsung 128GB Pro micro SD) shooting in RAW + JPG. Had no Issues with the card (except battery in camera) and still going strong. I did a few time lapses which is why my shot count is really high.

        • @KitchenSink096: it happened to me last year and happened to my brother as well this year, so I just don't want take the risk :)

Why not? They work fine. Adapters are just pass through. Not necessary a bottle neck for speeds that you can tell the real world difference.

I use MicroSD cards with an Adapter in my camera and it works fine. Its mainly for its versatility afterwards since they can be used for more devices like drones, phones, GoPros, dashcams etc when I dont need/use them for my camera. I carry multiple cards/adapters anyway like most people should for backups.

    • Thanks for the write-up, helped a lot!
I've bought the grip, a 3rd party battery to use on the side, a Sony 32gb SD card and a 3rd party screen protector.

I know dick about photography but you sound like you're hunting for solution for some undefined problem.

    • Whoa, this is really compact, exactly what I need, and it comes with the battery too! Awesome recommendation, thanks.
