Warranty Questions
If you're concerned about warranty given this is a purchase from the USA, don't be. I contacted WD support to get definitive answers on what the go is because I didn't want to have to ship the whole device back to the States — it's costly enough sending a single drive to Singapore tracked/traced for warranty service. I also wanted to make sure the whole 'Out of Region' warranty status didn't affect things; the Warranty Status Explanation originally had me concerned with the red "NO" symbol, but read on.
Component Warranty
Q: Can you replace components individually? For example, can you rip the drives out for use in a NAS etc without affecting your warranty?
A: Yes you can!
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is [snip].
In the WD My Book Duo all of the parts, Enclosure and internal drives, have the same warranty and they could be replaced in case of failure of any one of the components, individually.
The Warranty for the drives and enclosure is the same as for the complete unit. You will have to provide Purchase Receipt and Picture of the Label on the drives and Enclosure.
'Out of Region' Warranty
Q: I've heard that buying a WD device from overseas shows its warranty status as 'Out of Region', can I still claim warranty service in Australia?
A: Yes you can!
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is [snip].
Out of region means the device was manufactured to be sold in another country, however, the out of region status doesn't affect the warranty of the device, functionality and you can replace the device with us.
