LG Optimus Android phone for free on Three $29 Cap for 12 months ($348 total)

71

I know Vodafone also offers the LG Optimus on the $29 cap for a 12 month contract online, but with Three you get all the free unlimited social networking thrown in (Facebook, twitter, etc.). Three does not advertise this deal online (they normally want a 24 month contract), but if you walk into a shop they do give it out. They now have the 200MB of data on this plan as well.

I know it's not a hard-to-find bargain, but I think it's worth a mention because the phone is significantly better than other models on their 12-month plans (it has Android, WiFi, GPS, etc.). Reviews for this phone are mixed (some complain about performance or the touch screen), but so far I think it's a good phone that performs fine.

Internet sources seem to indicate that an official upgrade to Android 2.2 will be available for this phone from LG around mid-September.

Specs from Three website:

  • 3.0 inch touch screen
  • 3.0 megapixel camera with geo-tagging
  • Wi-Fi, GPS & Stereo Bluetooth connectivity
  • Google Search™, Talk™ Gmail™ and YouTube™
  • Multi-format media player
  • Android 1.6

Not a bargain imo, since vodafone have it for the same price. I wouldn't call this a bargain just because it has unlimited social networking. If you get it on the $19 cap for 24 months with vodafone, you'll get 1GB of data for the first 12 months.

Didn't get great reviews either http://www.cnet.com.au/lg-optimus-339301309.htm

    This phone is better, http://www.cnet.com.au/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-3393014…

The xperia mini, has a capacitive touchscreen which is MUCH better than the LG's Optimus resistive one.

Hey man, what's the dilly-o with capacitive and resistive? Just the basics of this whole argument, if possible. I'm on a Nokia N900 and I'm quite liking my resistive screen, if only for being able to select super tiny links easily with my stylus even if I'm zoomed out. I'm not picking sides either, I just want to know what the whole 'argument' is about.

And maybe if you could explain this whole Labor-Liberal thing too. :P

Well I guess it depends which one you prefer. Capacitive is better when using your fingers, more responsive and scratch-resistant. Resistive is pretty bad when using your fingers, but good with a stylus. I don't understand politics either haha :D

        • I'm with ranma - I've got a Nokia 5800, and I prefer the touchscreen on my Nokia to that on iPhones etc. I wouldn't say it's "bad" with your fingers, you just have to use it differently to a capacitive screen.

I guess the only 'major' difference between the two is that resistive + stylus gives you a finer accuracy (eg I can use a paint-like app on my Nokia no worries), but from what I understand resistive screens don't have the multi-touch feature that capacitive ones do (well, my 5800 doesn't anyways).

@G0bbo: Lol at getting these negative votes.. because a discussion is detrimental to Ozbargain? And perhaps people looking at this deal might learn something for when they choose their next phone? I just did an actual.. oh what's the word I'm looking for.. chuckle.

Anyhow, Gobbs, what's the multi-touch thing? My girlfriend's on the new iPhone 4, and we're trying to see what's different.. (although really, whose phone is superior. Ü)

            • @ranma: You were must likely negged, not for discussing but the way you said it, especially the part where you said "And maybe if you could explain this whole Labor-Liberal thing too. :P" which has nothing to do with the phone.

    • I don't really agree. You are comparing with a quarter-VGA phone, on a contract double the length, costing two times as much. You may get a GB the first year, but you get next to nothing the second year, and no free 3-to-vodafone. As for the capacitive, it's nice to have, but not essential to the phone's capabilities. I think this particular deal is a bargain because of the capabilities you get for the price.

      • I think they have changed the contract, because I wouldnt have compared them unless they were the same. I can't see this offer with 3 on the 12 month contract anymore. Vodafone caps are free to 3 and vodafone. Reviews for this phone say its slow performance and unresponsive screen, which are pretty big deal breakers. The resolution might not be as good, but I doubt there would be much difference since the phone is smaller. I'm not saying it's not worth getting, just saying it isn't a bargain.

        • Not sure what you mean by "I think they have changed the contract, because I wouldnt have compared them unless they were the same.". I think you are comparing very different things.

As I put in the description, the 12-month contract is not advertised by Three (but is available from stores if you ask for it). Vodafone advertises it, but not Three. Three throws in the free social networking stuff, Vodafone doesn't.

Not worth buying if you have to wait for 2.2…

LG phones are also horrible quality.

  • What attracted me is the 12month contract.
Crap phone it's okay, because I can still use my old ones =)

  • nothing attractive about 3's shitty coverage im afraid. all their phones are locked. and loaded with terrible hard loaded software.
