OnePlus 3T or Samsung Galaxy S7 (or Something Different) - 24hrs to Decide

Hey Guys

Usage

  • Android Auto
  • some apps on Marshmallow / Nougat
  • Good hardware for long term XDA support.. thus ability to get new rom updates
  • Secondary phone mainly used for data in car / outside
  • Could use it as primary if i sell my primary or in between phones..
  • Qi Charging a bonus but not necessary.. Car has in-built qi charging but not needed to be used as the phone will be plugged in for android auto and i assume it will charge via the cable while being used..

I am tossing between the two and can get either from eBay due to various deals and offers running.. and don't want to stretch that budget anymore..

3T($503 till day after): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/One-Plus-OnePlus-3-Three-3T-A3010… (due to 15% off eBay targeted deal)
S7 ($503 till tomorrow): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-32GB-Black-Gold…

Which one to go for? Or any other to consider?

Was also considering LG G5 but have dropped it..

Please help me decide asap… have to buy by end of tomorrow (24th)

Reasons to buy the OnePlus 3T:
    Screen is 5.5 vs 5.1
    Bigger battery 3400mah vs 3000mah
Lower res screen = longer battery life
    Faster performance, bragging rights.
    USB C vs micro USB
    Dual SIM card

Reasons to buy the Samsung Galaxy S7:
Higher res screen good for VR bad for battery
Dust/water proof over 1.5 meter and 30 minutes
    Better camera in low light
    SD card
Flagship from a well know brand, bragging rights.

Me personally I would choose the OnePlus 3T :)

Let us know rich phone you get :)

Nougat on the S7 gives you the choice of 720p, 1080p and 1440p resolutions. The physical resolution is still higher, but at least you can reduce GPU load.

Reasons to buy the OnePlus 3T:
      Screen is 5.5 vs 5.1

      Reason to buy SG7
      Screen is 5.1 vs 5.5

      • Hmmm, didn't word it very well. I sooo need more sleep.

The one reason I voted Samsung over the 3t. The 3t does not have all the 4g bands we use.

Yeah, the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T are better phones than the S7 and S7 Edge in all the practical fields…

…but the lack of Band 28 means you should completely overlook both phones if Mobile Data is a priority for you (which it should, unless you're using this as less of a phone and more of a tablet).

You can buy the Oppo R9s for $480 which has amazing specs and looks and feels like an iphone.

Ooh yes can't forget Oppo :D

I would go with OP3T..best xda friendly phone out there after google phones…

Personal opinion is the S7 and 3T are both fairly flaghship phones so both well supported, in terms of the S7 you'll get good support from Samsung BUT rom wise the s7 is empty, I heard it was something to do with knox, close sourced, yada yada I don't really know. But as someone who used to swap roms all the time with my nexus 5, you will not be doing that with the s7 (or at you're not looking at getting an aosp rom and all that), while I'd imagine there'd be heaps with the 3t.

Other then that though, I love the s7 (i have the edge) and believe its a great phone, I'm unsure but I always assumed it had better hardware specs then the 3T but I'm probably wrong. The water proofing is nice to have though just to not worry about it. I'd say either one you get you'll probably be fair happy with.

Personally if you were hoping to play around with roms and most things XDA has to offer I'd get the 3T, if you wanted a good phone to use as a phone I'd get the S7.

  • Thanks guys.. still even poll.. lol.. was looking for more one sided decision..

Main thing I see in S7 is the 700Mhz/Band 28 / IP68 / Camera - although I am note sure how much I am going to be using any.. but saying that since I will be having data sim from either telstra or optus (to use current mobile data sharing plan) might be useful (i havent looked into how data sharing plan will work in my current plans)

On the other hand 3T is good hardware with excellent XDA support and fear of future updates not getting into it will be less..

Anyone knows what model is the S7 selling from Vaya (link above)?

Or any other place to get S7 / 3T cheaper or equivalent? Going overseas in a month so can get GST back on S7 if its sold locally cheapish but couldn't find anything..

    damn it.. decision..

    • Looks like the enynos version of the s7 which is the best version.

  • How long until the OP4(5) comes out and would that be worth getting or how much would the price drop when that's released?

    • +2

      2 Months.
It will be released as early as late May, probably in July, and at the latest in October 2016.

As far as specs go; what we can infer from now is this:
      (good - better/accurate - best)
      - Price: U$529 - US$469 - US$399
      - OS: Android 7.0 - Android 7.1 - Android 7.1.2
      - CPU: 2.2GHz - 2.4GHz - 2.5GHz QSD 835
      - GPU: 600MHz - 700MHz - 750MHz Adreno 540
      - RAM: 4GB - 6GB - 8GB LPDDR4 (1866MHz)
      - Storage: 64GB - 128GB - 256GB UFS 2.0 (Non-expandable)
      - Battery: 3,300 - 3,500mAh - 3,700 mAh 3.9V Li-ion (Non-removable)
      - Screen: 1080p - 1440p - 2880x1440 Optic-AMOLED
      - Display: 5.5in - 5.7 in - 5.9 inches
      - Bezel size: 73% - 78% - 83% Screen to Body ratio
      - Thickness: 8.1mm - 7.4mm - 6.9mm
      - Weight: 170g - 160g - 150g

Camera's are a shot in the dark.
However, I think we will see a bump in quality and video resolution for the front camera with support for Wide-Angle.
The back camera should see an upgrade, but I think it will be a very slight upgrade from the previous SONY IMX298 sensor.
I think they will instead double the camera, like the LG G6, for some depth of field and AR/VR applications.

  • I'm glad I came across this thread.

I'm going through decision time now and heard the s7 is great. But the fact that you can't root it pretty much rules it out.

I'm a huge tasker and xposed (gravitybox mainly) fan and feel like I can't live without them. I don't want to trip Knox and void warranty, the engineering bootloader apparently gas a lot of lag etc.

I'd also like the external SD

    Don't know what to do

    • I am also a rooter.. but been looking into XDA and basically what I see it as

      • Knox is tripped on Stock ROM
      • If you rooting you might as well put a clean custom ROM like superman
      • Custom roms don't have this knox warning issue apparently
      • If you buying grey stock , you don't have warranty in austrlaia anyways?

The decision has come to Hardware of 3T v/s Band 28 of S7 ..

I am starting to lean more towards S7 as

      • its cheap on 20% discount from Vaya
      • I can use my 15% eBay code on something else
      • Band 28 for Optus / Telstra - good for 4G in car?
      • Can still root and custom rom as I see it
      • More accessories available locally? not sure if i need more than a spigen case..

I am still fighting the good fight and can't decide..

      • +1

regardless of warranty, unfortunately the only way to root the s7 is by the engineering bootloader which plagues your phone with issues. Deal breaker

xiaomi mi mix would've been good if only it had b28 for my telstra 4g

And I just found out from the post below that the 3T doesn't have b28 either! grrr!

        • Haven't read that anywhere but maybe.. (in terms of issues with root on S7).. been looking in XDA but nothing as such suggesting the above

        • @its:

My bad guys, upon further research it turns out only the USA versions of the S7/S7 Edge can't be rooted unless using the engineering bootloader.

The international variants using the Exynos processor are no problem to root for example the G930F or G935F

If you don't need Band28, then go for OnePlus 3T.

    • I would've liked to get the 3T but unfortunately you're mistaken.
It does NOT have Band 28

      https://www.frequencycheck.com/compare-devices/3YJptpy3/onep…

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm hoping I'm wrong

      • That's what I said on my above comment… OP3T doesn't have B28.

So I suggested OP if he doesn't need B28, he could get OP3T. I think OP got S7

        • +1

lol you did too, sorry I need some sleep
How much of a difference is band28?

          I'm with telstra

        • +1

          @sirs2k:

I am using Aldi Mobile (Telstra) and lives in Metro area, so never needed B28 (I have OnePlus One)

I guess its good to have B28 but if you live in Metro area you should be fine. Check OzTowers to check your nearest towers band support…

Guys.. In the end I have opted for S7 due to all the points above.. Hopefully a good choice
