Logging in to OzBargain from Overseas

EDIT EDIT:
So after reading the Moderator's comments, I guess I didn't dream it up after all. It really did (could) happen. I guess I'm just 'special'. (or maybe I was more of a lurker with very little OzBargain history back then, hence being blocked.
Not now though. Glad I brought it up.
Thanks OzBargainers. Is like being in a room full of older brothers who know stuff. Your past info has helped me to help many other people in real time. 🌸

EDIT: from the comments received below, it looks like the problem of logging into OzBargain on my last overseas trip was mine alone.
Just to be sure, I'll make sure that I'm logged in prior to leaving this time.
Thank you everyone for your kind help here :)

INITIAL POST:
I vaguely recall not being able to log into OzBargain from overseas last time I was away. I'm going away again so want to check in advance.
If yes, I spose it makes sense to keep comments local, but this site is addictive and I'm wondering how I'll manage when I'm way.. I wasn't addicted last trip away
would a vpn allow me to log in?

Mod: You can use OzBargain overseas. See comment

What type of issues did you have? I remember having no issues getting on the site although my interest in bargains quickly waned as the trip progressed.

  • From memory something like.. You're unable to log in to OzBargain because you're outside of Au (words to that effect).

Ozbargain is fine even from China without any VPN

    • The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, commonly known in China as the June Fourth Incident (六四事件), were student-led demonstrations in Beijing in 1989. More broadly, it refers to the popular national movement inspired by the Beijing protests during that period, sometimes referred to as the '89 Democracy Movement (八九民运). The protests were forcibly suppressed after the government declared martial law. In what became widely known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, troops with assault rifles and tanks killed at least several hundred demonstrators trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square. The number of civilian deaths has been estimated at anywhere between the hundreds to the thousands.

McDuck, I'm struggling, but I think you're saying that since the Tiananmen Square Massacre, electronic communication became more supressed(?), or perhaps something more cryptic here…. or just wanting to show off your history knowledge :)

It's a statement about internet censorship and a token attempt to defeat it.

          @Scrooge McDuck:
Thanks for clarifying for me, McDuck :)

      • Upvoted, as may well be news to reps like MiniInTheBox, and others on OzBargain.

  • Hmmmm… I wonder what my problem was then. It seemed to be an 'OzBargain ain't gonna let you play' type message… Could it have been a restrictive provider wherever I was (but with that type of message..?) ? I was most likely on wifi

Oh? I went on Ozbargain regularly on my KL holiday and had no issues, but I was already logged in from my phone :)

    • So it's def working from overseas then. I'll ensure that I'm logged in before I go. Thank you kza2610

I remember this guy seeking help on ozbargain a while ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153794

When I was overseas I can browse ozbargain without issues.

    • +1

Yes, he sure didn't have an issue logging in.. You either.
Just a weird little something for me. Maybe this time I'll be ok..
I may have wanted to ask a tech question or similar for it to be important to me

Didn't have any issues logging in and commenting whilst I was in Asia during January.

I tried to post an aliexpress deal when I was in Malaysia but it gave a message saying you can't post aliexpress from your current location or something. Had to VPN back to Australia, browsing was fine.

    • AliExpress Posting Guidelines:

      No Posts from Overseas Users
Most overseas users are representatives of companies. By banning all overseas users, this prevents undeclared reps (and 1 post wonders) from posting AliExpress deals.

Same goes for eBay & Amazon.

      • Explains the increase in Ali reps wanting to post deals.

Was starting to think I must have dreamt it. Thanks for this information Neil.

  • Ah, that's interesting! Thanks daveaus

Please order a Phở Tái for me from Phở Quỳnh, near Bùi Viện street :)

  • Firstly, if you have an issue with your account, contact us via TWAM and we can bypass any blocks which I have done to your account.

Overseas IP addresses aren't banned from using OzBargain, however due to excessive SPAM in some countries, you may find your access to OzBargain blocked.

Thanks Neil. Am now feeling better about feeding the addiction if needed while I'm away.

I am overseas at the moment and have no problems logging in.

do they have the internet Overseas?

    • +6

Fortunately they don't have the NBN :).

        Does anyone!?

I wonder if it is anything to do with the time? Sometimes when I play cat evolution I put the time forward and then I wonder why OzBargain isn't working.

    • +1

      Cat evolution…. Sounds like fun.
Gaming is a whole world I haven't even entered into. Didn't realise they had cats in that world…. makes it tempting 😺. I'll remember the time thing if I do go there. Thanks Savas

I have encountered (local) hotspots that declare OzB as an insecure site and refuse to allow the connection. The best known are the ones in Woolies. I think the reason is the hotspot's proxy as a safety measure checks that the cert is valid before allowing the https pass through. Unfortunately some proxies don't have the most up to date list of cert authorities so cannot verify OzB's cert.

Thanks greenpossum… This is all good info that I'm getting here.
