Recommendations for Wi-Fi Light Switch (Just for One Room for Now So Two Bulbs)

Thinking of trying out some Wi-Fi light bulbs or remote controlled if that is cheaper so I don't have to get out of bed to control my light switches also easier also the idea of controlling the colour and intensity sounds pretty cool and nifty.

Well probably need max two. Will try one then either use the other as a main one or back up emergency light bulb.

Don't really need automation just Wi-Fi capability or Bluetooth whichever is better or cheaper.

Using android but browser is also probably good for non Android and simpler devices.

Also how long do these normally last if anybody knows? 5, 10 or 20 months/years?

These will bedroom lights so constant most use.

Can order from Amazon if cheapest but want to know where others have found it if there are better deals.

So far just looked at Belkin and Lifx among others.
Leaning towards Lifx for the moment.

Bonus points: looking for motion sensing lights for indoor night time use probably battery powered for small hall ways

The light fixture is bayonet so B22.

  • Honestly, I was using a cheap Chinese led bulb and it worked great. Sounds like you want simple remote features so bulbs like that can be had for under $15.

But don't shy away from automation. It is very satisfying to voice command Lifx lights (via an echo dot) instead of having to open an app.

    • I hate voice command. I have tried it, not for me. I hardly ever user my voice and hate using it so much I shy away from voice calls and the such.

Just need remote or app preferred browser last.

  • I've got one of the Gen 1 Lifx from the Kickstarter campaign. Have had it for approx 4 years. It works fairly well though I don't use it a lot as it's only in a lamp stand in the living room. It's fairly big and bulky and generates a bit of heat so probably won't fit in a lot of smaller light enclosures (it won't fit in the ceiling fan light enclosure in my bedroom). I would assume the latest generation (3rd gen) would be a bit smaller.

Functionality wise it works quite well and is easy enough to control from the Android app selecting a range of colours, whites and brightness. It can be controlled from anywhere via the internet too (via app or triggers like IFTTT) though I haven't had any use for that.

  • FYI. I've found the Xiaomi YeeLights along with a few Flic buttons works great. It takes a bit of setup to get some REST calls for the lights via one of the many nodejs packages or home-assistant.
