Opinion required: Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz, Holden Barina or Kia Rio

Hi Guys

We are planning to buy 2017 new Automatic Car and wanted an opinion on the following cars to decide which one we should go for:

Toyota Yarris Ascent 1.3L – 2017

Honda Jazz VTi 1.5L- 2017

Holden Barina LS 1.6L – 2017

Kia Rio s 1.4L – 2017

Please share your view especially if you know any specific things to look for.

We have a budget of around 20K. We will be using the car mostly for weekends or during long holidays to explore other states and plan to resale the car at least after 5 years, so yes resale value is of high importance. Handling and servicing cost is also to be considered keeping in view the usage for 5 years minimum.

Also, we are planning to have this financed upto 3/4 the value (say 15k if the price comes to 20K). Please do let us know which of the above company offers better rate or less penalty if we decide to pay off early (early settlement) or if you can suggest any specific bank that may offer better rates and service.

Thanks alot
Anzi

It might help if you explained more about what mattered to you - handling, running costs, storage capacity, dealer experience, price, resale value, your budget, etc.

  • Thanks Vinesde for your response. As this is my first experience with a forum, please feel free to advise.

Does it need to be new? I feel a larger sized car would be better for your needs.

  • +1

Jazz or Yaris, however I'd avoid the cvt version of the jazz.

    • +6

+1 to these, can't go wrong with a Honda or Toyota.

Although my pick would be the Jazz, they're actually pretty roomy and practical if you need to carry large things in a pinch.

However - you do say you'd like to take the car on long holidays or interstate…I'd say picking something from the class above (Corolla, Civic etc) would be better and more comfortable on the highway, else you'll be stuck with a loud engine noise the whole time you're on the highway!

do you want to survive a crash or die, should be the question here.

  • +1

    Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Corolla :)

    • +2

Mazda 3, i30 and Corolla are in a different car category.

  • +6

I would pick the Rio. Heaps of warranty.
Consider Cerato too, it is in your price range and much better car.

    • +1

      +1 for the Cerato.

Excellent reviews, 7 year warranty, quite spacious inside.

      • +1

I'd go for a Cerato too if your budget is under $20k. It's a bit more spacious than the rio, jazz etc which would help on longer trips.

Great value for money, excellent warranty and road side assistance program.

  • The cars u list are prolly good for weekend car, but if ur travelling interstate u might want a sedan for a more cortfortsble ride, and easier drive.

I have a Honda city, slightly over 20k, great small sedan, prolly just ok for long holiday drives ( freeway it does struggle without a good run up on hills with air con on!)
How big is ur family too?

Do u have a home loan, would recommend against borrowing at car dealers, full of fees etc, try going to a bank for a personal loan or redraw from ur home loan

    • -3

Do u have a home loan

False economy, you're borrowing for 20-30yrs instead of 5

      personal loan

You really think a personal loan is cheaper than a secured car loan… wow

      • +6

IF op has a home loan with a redraw facility or offset account this would most likely be the cheapest financing option. Regardless of whether its for a car, investment, holiday.

      • +3

Not false economy, redraw the 20k and pay it back over 5 years not 30 years. By far is the best option if available at the lowest rate.

        • Using an excel spreadsheet? Good luck with the time, motivation and discipline to do that!

        • +1

Who needs a spreadsheet? Work out what you would of paid in personal loan repayments then draw it out of the home loan and increase your home loan repayments to cover.

New Swift due to be released in May/June looks to blow those out of the water based on the specs and asking price

    • -1

      Rio is better :)

      • +2

For under $20k you'll have a car with:
        GPS/CarPlay/Android Auto/Bluetooth
        Blind-Spot Monitors
        Lane Departure Assist
        360-view cameras

        And Japanese reliability & resale

        ;)

        • +1

          7 year warranty?

        • GPS/CarPlay/Android Auto/Bluetooth
You mean like a $150 stereo from autobarn…..

Gotta love your salesman dribble, maybe let everyone know that you work for a certain dealership.

        • +1

          @Lenny Pepperidge:

I don't need to put it in every single comment I make, same as I have NFI what you do for a living.

I've made it known previously, but it's not necessary in every post, unless you're going to ask each and every commenter in here what they do for a living…?

        • @Spackbace:

it applies when you are recommending a car.. do I need to know you work for a dealership when you're posting some supermarket deals? no.

        • @Lenny Pepperidge:

So why aren't you asking everyone else in this thread what they do for work? Why single me out?

    • It looks like puke

      • +1

Well, you do like the Jazz, so maybe you need glasses :)

        • Couldn't really care less about what it looks like.
But don't try to tell me your 2 year olds art work is worthy of the Louvre

        • +2

          @Drew22:

          Wut?

Couldn't really care less about what it looks like.

So you care how one looks, but not the other…

          Wut?

        • @Spackbace:
          Wut? They're all ugly

    • Isn't it bit small though?

  • +1

A few years ago I bought a new auto 5 door Yaris YRS 1.5l for $20k drive away (qld). Got to 260,000km on it, then accidentally destroyed it on a rainy day (my fault). Got a $7k payout from insurance. Very boring car, but it never missed a beat.

    • Boring until you were skidding down the road on a rainy day by the sounds of it…?

  • +2

during long holidays to explore other states

Personally I would look for a car with Cruise Control for long trips? Not sure if that is standard with all the cars you list there?

I would probably choose between the Yaris and the Jazz out of that list (just because I haven't tried the others).

Jazz is really amazing in terms of the magic seats (could sometimes mean you don't need to get delivery or hire a van if buying a lot from Ikea), but wont mean much if you have a full car of people. I don't mind it, but a lot of more learned people seem to hate the CVT.

Yaris is also a no brainer I think.

BIL has a Swift, pretty good too.

  • Jazz
    The lane change camera
The way the front seats fold
The way the rear seats fold
The cup holder to the right of the steering wheel

    • +1

      But they look like puke.

  • +2

If you don't mind the design, I recommend Honda Jazz with given option.

Resell value is not bad too but if you look for resell value, wouldn't it be better to get 3~4 yrs old used car?

First 3~4 year drops the resell value most but if you buy your car after those periods, you would expect lesser drop on resell value.

  • Toyota for resale

  • Honda Jazz VTi 1.5L- 2017 = my preference

  • +2

car mostly for weekends or during long holidays to explore other states

I would not recommend any of the cars you have listed for interstate trips.

resale value is of high importance

the difference in resale value for the listed cars after 5 yrs / 100,000 kms is going to be negligible. Some might prefer a jap/korean over a holden though.

If I were you I would go for a car based on the answers to the questions below:
Did you drive all the listed cars?
    How did they feel?
Which seat was the most comfortable to sit for 6-10 hrs?
which car did you prefer by looks?
which car offers you the space for stuff you like to carry on your interstate trips?
Does the car have a full size spare?
whats the full tank range(This would help in your long distance travels)?

Mrs has a Rio. She loves it. Reliable and hasnt given one issue. 7 yr warranty cant go wrong.
    p.s: stay clear of barina

    • Why? What's wrong with the Barons?

      • +1

Mate had it. Gearbox gave him a lot of trouble.

        • Seems a lot of hate on the holden for their crappy reliability.

        • @bich.light: No at all. I had a VE SSV and it never caused me any grief. Just depends on the model. Captiva is another lemon in their range.

        • @Shiv86:

Hmm I see. What about the spark?

        • @bich.light: Isnt that a barina

        • +1

          @Shiv86:
I think they've changed the line out now. The holden site advertises them as different vehicles.

  • +1

    Kia Rio without a doubt
The maintenance on the other cars are more expensive
Never ever touch a barina. Worth nothing even a 3 years later
Make sure you keep the service records
Honda is expensive to maintain with quality parts
Toyota isn't what it used to be
Kia is king especially with the new shape for the Rio
    Dont worry about resale value
All cars drop by half after 4 years.
No don't touch the cerato either
This is coming from a dealer.
You'll end up buying whichever car is prettier πŸ˜‚
Go to John Cadogan website and you'll definitely save money
Dont buy any extras from the dealer. Tinting, paint protection etc none of it. Buy it outside if you need. Be warned the car may not come with floor mats.
Also put on the contract that the sale is dependent on a family member liking the car. Why? Because that way if you decide to back out of the deal you can blame it on the family member. MAKE SURE it's on the contract!

  • Go to John Cadogan website and you'll definitely save money

I didn't. couldn't get me better than what i had.

  • Thanks, alot guys. Pretty good insight and things to know before we finalize.

Yes, we dis the test drive of all of them. The design seems to be very similar in all except magic seats in Honda. Almost all has cruise control but no navigation system.

Toyota Yaris 2017 has the cheapest service capped at 140 every 6 months but unfortunately, their interest rate ranges from 8.5 - 10.9% which is highest amongst all. Their penalty rate for early settlement is also capped at 150 per year.

Kio Rio 2017 no doubt has the longest warranty period but during the test drive, we found that it take more time for the car to shift gear (auto) at a U-turn. The dealer mentioned that this is because of its a new car and will be settled after some use which I doubt.

Honda was smooth to drive with blind spot monitors and magic seats. we some negotiation, the guy was ready to throw in Mats, trays, mud guards together with full fuel of tank.

Thanks once again everyone for all your contribution. This has really helped us in taking our decision.

  • Mate. FORGET about what anyone else says! This is something only YOU can decide as its really a PERSONAL choice.
Firstly, Take each one for a drive and see which you like the best.
Secondly check the cost of capped servicing if its available as this can vary considerably
Thirdly Check which one is cheapest to insure as this too can vary considerably
Fourthly but not least importantly the location of the nearest dealer is VERY IMPORTANT! You don't want servicing and repairs to be a major inconvenience.

      MATE STOP SCREAMING!

      • He is not screaming… he is using a mill on some letters…

" For those who have never encountered one, a mill is a typewriter without lower case letters. "

  • May look at new Suzuki baleno

  • +2

a no brainer ,the Cerato at $19,990 auto drive away— 7 yr warranty ,the Rio is small for legroom

    ..

  • ToyotAπŸ‘ŒπŸΎ

  • Hyundai Accent - it is the most practical choice.

  • Why Ford Fiesta is not in your list? Same category, compact cars.

I did test drive on all these cars before choosing the Ford Fiesta.

That's been 4 years without a problem, except for a transmission issue.

  • Add a poll to make it easy for you.
I would get a rio or a cerato, or i30 if you can push your budget a bit.
I would stay awaaaay from a barina.

  • +2

    Yaris, they run forever.

    • +1

      Toyota ftw!!

  • All of them are ugly for with Mazda 3.

  • Forget the holden

  • Boogatty Vayron only choice on here there is.

    • Get a red one, yeah!
Like BNJAM3 suggested consider Suzuki Swift, or Toyota.

  • I would say go with Suzuki swift. Highly reliable and great resale value and cheap on fuel, you will also get capped price service :) Rent one for couple of days and see if you like it or no.

  • 2016 Mazda 3 demo can be had for 20,000. Better resale and fuel efficiency than the Cerato.

  • Toyota Yarris but have you look at new mazda 3
