Buying a Motorcycle from Interstate

Hey All,

I'm searching for a motorcycle to buy, and there are some options interstate. I'm wondering what the particular complexities / potential problems could arise with purchasing interstate.

I've been told it is straightforward enough. I can use an independent motorcycle inspection service, such as http://www.motorcycleinspectionservices.com.au/ to confirm the condition of the bike. Freight can be arranged for several hundred dollars. I assume a roadworthy from one state will not be valid in another. And when it comes to payment, what method would you recommend?

Any generally related advice is appreciated. Thanks.

  • you may also need to pay for a BLUE SLIP.
also do a full WOVS check. I have been caught before where I did a WOVS check in the state I was purchasing it from (NSW) only to take it back to QLD; and find out it was on the QLD WOVS register whilst trying to register it there. I had to then go through an expensive process of getting the car put through the ringer as I tried to get it removed from the WOVS register so it could be registered in QLD.

  • I have experience in this.

I purchased one for my father in Victoria, he lives in WA. We rode it to WA and had to transfer it to his name.

You need to buy the bike in another state without rego or roadworthy (I had it roadworthied so we could ride it across australia - yes you can get temp movement permits but there was a reason behind why we didn't do it but I can't remember what it was).

Once you have it in your state you need to present the following to the transport people:

    • transfer papers (I supplied both Vic and WA transfer papers just to make sure)
    • proof of purchase/receipt.
    • RWC

    And you're all hunky dory.

Make sure to negotiate a low price because they can get a refund on a large portion of the rego.
