Spotify Premium $5.99/Month for Students

1170

In addition to ad-free streaming for "the duration of their student life," students also get access to offline listening and the Premium tier's improved sound quality.
Note that Spotify doesn't clarify how many years the deal is good for, but in the US at least users get a one-year discount that can be renewed up to three times for a total of four years.

  • Anyone know what the verification process is? Uni email?

    • +1

Correct, I only needed my Griffith email address.

    • I photocopied my student ID and that worked.

Says maximum of 12 months at the moment and you have to "prove it" to them through a combination of details…

    • not entirely sure about the verification process - in the USA they use a company called SheerID to verify student status beyond a .edu email address
also the Ts&Cs say "You are entitled to activate up to three (3) additional Discount Periods for yourself by re-submitting your information on the Student Discount Offer sign-up page so long as you are a Qualifying Student." so again I imagine it's 12 months at a time which can be renewed 3 times for a total of 4 years

      • In order to verify that you are a Qualifying Student, Spotify may receive your Qualifying Information, share such information with SheerID, Inc., and receive confirmation of your student status from SheerID, Inc. We reserve the right to determine if you are a Qualifying Student in our sole discretion. Spotify will store your name, educational institution name, email address and date of birth.

    high school students?

    • Student almost always means all students including high school and tertiary students.

    • +1

Unfortunately no. I just tried and there are no high schools listed in the verification menu.

  • +8

For those non students, or those that just want something longer term, this is still a pretty excellent deal if you don't mind jumping through some hoops (though it was pretty easy in my experience). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/279292

    • Do you find the catalog is not as complete though?

      • I've only had one experience where a friend recommended a (niche) artist and I couldn't find any of his music

    • can you use the australian store after purchasing with a vpn?

  • +7

'[C]an be renewed up to three times for a total of four years.' They clearly don't like law, medical or engineering double-degree students, then.

    • +28

      Does anyone?

      • +1

So much acerbity on this site. :/

      • +5

        The tax department certainly does.

    • +1

odds are the engineering students are probably pirating their shit anyway. So I dont think they care.

  • I've already a premium account but want to roll over to a student account. Would I be double-booking myself by signing up for this?

    • +5

If you already have the Premium Service and activate the Student Discount Offer, the first Discounted Month will start after the expiration of the period of the Premium Service or Unlimited Service that you have already paid for. If you are a Free or new Spotify user, the Discounted Month will start after activation of the Student Discount Offer. You may only use the Student Discount Offer for one Spotify account.

    Effective 18 April 2017.

This offer (the "Student Discount Offer") is made available by Spotify (as defined in the Spotify Terms and Conditions of Use) to students at an accredited higher education institution who meet additional qualifications described below (“Qualifying Student”). Qualifying Students are entitled to receive a discount of fifty (50) percent on the monthly subscription price of the Spotify Premium Service (as defined in the Spotify Terms and Conditions of Use) for each month (the “Discounted Month”) up to a period of twelve (12) consecutive months ("Discount Period"). To activate the Offer, you must submit information sufficient for us to verify that you are a Qualifying Student such as your name, valid educational institution, email address, date of birth or other documents used to qualify you to the Student Discount Offer (“Qualifying Information”), as well as your payment details; by submitting the foregoing information, you (i) accept the Student Discount Offer Terms and Conditions; (ii) consent to us using your submitted information in accordance with our Privacy Policy; (iii) acknowledge and agree to the Spotify Terms and Conditions of Use and these Student Discount Offer Terms and Conditions; and (iv) agree that you will automatically continue to subscribe to the Premium Service on a monthly recurring basis, at the then-full price, after the end of the Discount Period, unless you activate another Student Discount Offer. If you do not want to continue to subscribe to the Spotify Premium Service at the end of the Discount Period, you can terminate your subscription to the Premium Service at any time by logging into your Spotify account and following the prompts on the Account page, or by clicking here and following the instructions. Termination will take effect at the expiration of the then-current Discounted Month. If you terminate your subscription to the Premium Service at any time during the Discount Period, you may re-activate the Student Discount Offer, but any used and unused Discounted Months will be deducted from the Discount Period, so that you only receive any remaining unused months from that Discount Period. You are entitled to activate up to three (3) additional Discount Periods for yourself by re-submitting your information on the Student Discount Offer sign-up page so long as you are a Qualifying Student.

We reserve the right to determine if you are a Qualifying Student in our sole discretion. Spotify will store your name, educational institution name, email address and date of birth.

A limited number of Student Discount Offers are available, while supplies last. Spotify reserves the right to terminate this Student Discount Offer at any time and for any reason. After such time of termination, Spotify shall not be obligated to redeem any further Student Discount Offers. Neither prepaid cards nor Spotify gift cards can be used as a valid payment method for this offer.

      Needs more words.

    • +1

Can you please speak this in student? It is supposedly for us anyway.

  • +2

Just confirming that is $5.99 a month and not a one off price? if so, perhaps add a "per month" to the title.

  • +4

Google Music need to get on to this.

I'm on Apple Music as they are the only company (that I know of) that offer student discounts. I much prefer the layout and feel of Spotify. I'll be converting to Spotify after my 3 month trial with Apple is over.

    • Getting Google Music and YouTube Red for $9.99 isn't that bad.

    • -3

I got Apple Music student sub, and combined with the kmart 25% off promo, I'm effectively getting 75% off. Winning!

      • +7

        50% * 75% = 37.5%

        37.5 != 25

    • Google Music and Apple Music are terrible if you like electronic music. The yanks just don't get the genres. The European Spotify team constantly make great playlist however.

  • +2

(profanity) SheerID. I've submitted documents proving that i'm a student 3 times and have been rejected every time. Their system is bullshit. Apple's system for verifying that your a student is much better.

    • -3

Apple's system for verifying that your a student is much better.

      The honesty system?

      • +1

no, you have to register through unidays.

        • I've never had to prove to Apple I was a student to buy a device - I assume Unidays is required for Apple Music then?

        • @itsMartin: yes, only for Apple Music.

  • Can anyone recommend which would be better for iphone users…this or apple music?

Read mtaing's comment above which is helpful

    • +4

I'd try them both and decide.

I tried Apple music for 3 months when it launched and it was awful. I went back to Spotify after a couple of weeks. They've made some improvements since then but I haven't gone back. They'd need to do a lot with the interface to win me over, and Spotify's music discovery has been awesome for me as well.

    • +1

As itsMartin said both have free trials so you should try both and decide for yourself! if you use both free trials you will have 6 months of free music streaming! Now to my opinion: The spotify interface is much more intuitive and sleek than the Apple Music interface. The Apple music interface is terrible, when you first start using it all the setting that you want such as shuffle and repeat are all hidden away (watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tfrWqGcsMg , People on the street try to find the shuffle function in Apple Music) compared to spotify extremely intuitive interface. Although Apple Music does have more exclusive songs/artists such as Taylor Swift which are only available on Apple Music I don't think this makes up for their shit interface. Then there's apple music on windows. Using itunes on windows to access Apple Music is a absolutely terrible the client is extremely slow sometimes doesn't work at all. Also Apple Music has Siri support so if that's something you use consider it. Both Apple Music and Spottily have student discount so the prices are the same/very similar. Hope this helps you make your decision :D

edit: If you haven't already guessed I use Spotify

    • Hey thanks to you guys for the reply…..been using apple music as part of telstra phone plan which is coming to an end. Ive got student discount so wasn't sure whether to extend it or switch to spotify. Kind of tried to stick with apple as I like the way everything integrates…..however I think from the comments I will give it a switch and see how it goes with spotify

      Cheers

  • Is there a way to pay for this on the Spotify iOS app using iTunes store credit?

  • There are barely any supporting documents with dates University provides not to mention they only allow me to upload 2 documents then wait 3 days for confirmation.

    Aus finally gets the discount!

Didn't take too long to be approved. Submitted a pic of my student card and the confirmation of enrollment form. Now I'm saving $6 a month, very happy about that.

Hey Netflix, pls do the same.

    • And that will buy you exactly one coffee a month, or 6 if you go to 7-11

      • +1

        6 large slurpees a month!

  • +6

This is still $72/year…get on a family sharing plan with 5 other randoms you can meet via the Classifieds forum and you can have it for half that price: $18 x 12 months / 6 persons = $36 per person, per year.

    • I wonder how strict they are on the same address business- are they allowed to track your location or something?
Perhaps they figure that those who band together this way would otherwise pay nothing at all, so maybe they ignore it.

      • I used the billing address of the person who set it all up. As for "location tracking" - of course it's possible via the app, or, to a lesser degree, the IP range, but AFAIK there aren't the same geography based restrictions like there are with Netflix etc.

  • Not sure why they waited so long to offer a student discount, considering apple have been doing so for over a year

  • +1

They finally listened to me :) after about fifty feedback submissions XD

  • Anyone from unimelb having issues with SheerId?

  • +2

Family Spotify accounts are $17.99 and can have up to 6 accounts linked to them. Find 5 friends and you'll be paying $3 a month each - no student status required. I think you're technically meant to be at the same address but that's as easy as each of your friends changing their account settings.

Seems expensive. How much just to rent one friend?

A little tip for you guys.
I use Spotify web browser + Adblock = Spotify with no ads.
Create your playlists on the app.

Pfff, use a hacked APK for no adds and no forced shuffle.

      • no forced shuffle

      • For clarification, use the apk in a android emulator on your computer.

        • Pfft, just use a system-wide adblock and the native program and you're set.

        • @chossenger:

I already do. But that doesn't allow non shuffle play on mobiles.

        • @PainToad: yeah nah, I use a modded apk too, I was just replying to samfisher about running that apk in Bluestacks instead of a more native approach.

  • I wonder if this will work with my .edu address..

  • Just find a group of friends and do the family plan. That's what I do and we all pay $3 a month.
