Costco isn't even that cheap, but it's worth it.
but it's worth it
WORTH IT
Great logic, (slowly claps)
unless you are willing to buy in bulk, i dont see the real point
Need to spend over 2k to recover the membership IMO, Costco's tyres and fuels seems to be cheap if there's one nearby
If you have access to Costco petrol then absolutely. You make up the fee in petrol savings alone. On PetrolSpy for Casula as of just now:
Costco - 109.7
7-Eleven - 125.9
BP - 125.9
Caltex - 127.9
Caltex Truckstop - 139.9I am within 4 KM radius from Ringwood Store.
Petrol is not accessible for me unless travelling towards south/eastern side.
I bought a membership the first year the Moorabbin Costco opened and despite visiting 3 times I never purchased a thing.
There are only 2 of us at home so buying in bulk isn't really worth it and despite that I thought it was generally expensive for grocery items.
It maybe good if you have a big family or buying for regular functions/parties.
Needless to say I haven't renewed my membership.Note you can go back and flash your card for entry if you ever feel like confirming you made the right decision. If you find something you want to buy, can just join again. We go every 6 or so months just for a browse and don't buy anything.
I have membership and the main point - a petrol station in Moorabbin Airport, the cost of membership is easily pays itself in a few months, If you are driving on a regular basis. It's only two of us in the household, but we are buying quite a few things there: non grocery stuff is mostly cheaper - I bought there bar stools, steam mop, car battery, blanket, cleaning staff for home / car, led bulbs, adhesive 3M staff (for picture hanging and floor protection) and etc. - was significantly cheaper.
let's do a simply math:
we are paying $55 for membership (business one, just requires your ABN)At the moment petrol/diesel is around 18-20 cents per litre cheaper than on other servos - let's say on general it's 10 cents cheaper (usually around 15 cents) - so in our case it's around 2-3 tanks of fuel for two cars per month - let's say 130-180 litres of fuel (our tanks are 70L diesel / 80L petrol) so, it's $13-18 minimum per month (generally more savings, atm it's around $30 of savings per month), so, worst case scenario - 4-5 months and it pays itself on petrol (very moderate mileage)
Also, some food from their culinary is really good and significantly cheaper then everywhere else.
Feel free to ask questions.
like any savvy shopper you will need to be familiar with your unit pricing and specials that your other supermarket offers.
Costco isn't going to be cheap if you don't know the regular or sale price of products you often buy at other outlets.
like Coles and Woolworths, Costco has sales too.
it also depends on the type of shopper you are, a basket of goods kind of person or an individual item person. you can shop a basket of goods at Coles and be exactly the same price as Woolworths because certain items are more value when compared to others. or are you the type of shopper that will walk to different outlets to complete a basket of goods, that way you make the most of discounted items in each store to bring down your overall cost of your basket.
Costco is generally cheaper for items outside the regular shopping basket or for those that have a large family.
Costco is also good for non grocery items like the Aldi special buys category.
Costco own brand Kirkland, their products are of excellent quality
if Costco were allowed to sell the range of foods and products like they have in the US, it will be a whole different story, from my understanding they have been restricted to do so.

besides gas, if you live near one, costco sells products that are hard to find elsewhere. Snow crabs for example! As an american i love them and Its incredibly hard to find them in australia. I also personally actually prefer their homebrand over a lot of big names (kirkland). A lot of americans actually prefer the kirkland brand over others when it comes to toiletries, batteries, etc.
as a discount example, it is not always way cheaper but when ps4 was just released I got a controlled for $59. I still rarely see them below maybe $79 now. They have decent sales.
The warranty is godly. If it is the same here, which i think it is, as long as you have your account open you can pretty much always bring something back if it breaks.
Costco isn't even that cheap, but it's worth it.
