Cheap Comprehensive Car Insurance? Who Is Your Insurer?

Hi All,

Have recently purchased car 2006 Focus Zetec ~8K value. Was thinking of getting a comprehensive insurance.

Just a year ago I was using Bingle and had my full year comprehensive car insurance for $560 on a 2007 Lancer ES.
Was looking up online today and found every insurance provider is very expensive.

Quotes that I am looking at now are all $1000+ Woolworths is $2500. Is it coz I am listing 2 people? What if I don't list the other driver?

I really don't care about service, or extra goodies as long as I get something back for my car if there is a accident.
I may also have to put my wife on cover as well now that she is on her Green P's.

Me 28 YO
Wife 24 YO

What's your opinion?

  • Its all depend on your situation, type of car, location, age,, history, extras, excess you willing to pay, just login to each provider and start getting quotations, enjoy :)

if you are slack you can start with www.comparethemarket.com.au or www.iselect.com.au/car/

    edit:
Good example, you said you had a $560 on a 07 Lancer ES and now $1000+ I assume, you get that after you adding your wife, when she is a P plater and under age of 30.

    • thanks for replying but i just tried generic search and everything was coming 1000+

Dont use either service. They will stalk you for weeks. They dont give you any extra discount. Just do some manual search. I am with AAMI and whilst its not the cheapest, it is quite reasonable. Their service is awesome. You can check out Bingle too.

Coles - very cheap and gives free windscreen replacement.

    • Just tried to get a quote from coles again suprise to find quote for myself was 900 something. Added my wife and quote came down to $887. cheapest so far.

  • woolies car insurance - they beat my renewal notice which was with budget direct.

I was expecting it would be cheap but it came up 2500 something…

      • that can't be right, my Ford Focus is much newer than yours. Maybe because your wife is below 25 in age which drives the price ridiculously high.

        My premium costs $791.71

  • Im with Bingle who always come out cheap for me. Side questions:- how to insurers know if you have made claims within the last 3-5 years if you have been with a provided that isnt part of their insurance group….? Is it an honesty policy, and then if they find out you lied they will cancel/reject your claim? Or do they share info..? Cheers

    • Contract void ab initio.
Not sure if share info, but why take risk

  • Im also with bingle, claimed a windscreen replacement and had it replaced the next day. No problems so far and dramatically and i mean dramatically cheaper than elsewhere. My renewal came and I cant find anything cheaper or anything thats close so will stick with for another year.

One of the most important things for me is choice of repairer or not. If I choose my own repairer I have a lot more faith the job will be done properly. I have no faith over their own 'certified' repairers.

    • This! Too many people looking at the premium and not reading their policy PDF.
Then complain about workshops not using OEM or 2nd hand parts or not covering contents.
It's in the PDF, read it and sign if you understand.

For a 10 year old car valued about 8k I would rather stick to third party rather than comprehensive insurance.

    • i might as well do that

  • Try the member insurance companies, racv, racq etc.
and choose different excess amounts and see how that changes the total.

  • My 1998 Magna has comprehensive insurance with Bingle. The premium was cheaper or on par with quotes for THIRD PARTY insurance with other providers.

EDIT: This thread just prompted me to get another online quote. My policy expires next month. The quote is $200 more than my current policy. Interesting to see the cost of the premium when I get the renewal.

  • nrma $540 but $2000 excess.

    • will try thanks

  • Increase your excess. Insurance should be there for catastrophes, not to protect against every little thing.

I increased my excess to $2k and it dropped my premium substantially.

    • excellent ideas thanks

      • I do they same for my home insurance but the opposite to the car. Happy to pay an extra $100-150 a year to have a $600 excess to fix little accidents cheaply

  • RACV (in Vic) worked out the cheapest for me. $500 cheaper than Youi who promote themselves as "We get you"… more like "We get how to rip you off".

  • Big thanks to CJB. My quote wad coming over $1000 with 10 different companies. Bingle came $736 asked coles to beat price. $712 comprehensive with windscreen and hire car

Over 1000 with NRMA, AAMI. Woolworths, ozicare, progressive, aupost, allianz, qbe you name it

  • Do a compare the meerkat/iselect search then price match with Coles.

    • They want too much personal info

      • Like what? …do you do drive-bys?

        • Like name & contact details.

I prefer to stick to sites that would give me a quote online, without any chance of a pestering follow up call from their telemarketing people

      • Just don't put in your name and number. It takes 10 seconds to enter "AAAAAAA" and 0400 000 000 then click next

Is there ever a week or month that goes by where the "Who to insure with" Q is not asked, not to mention the PM's flying around off the boards, so here is some background for those who know little about the Insurance Industry.

IAG own both CGU and NRMA which is the largest insurer of Australians. They also own SWANN, Mutual Community General Insurance, SGIO, SGIC, WFI -Wesfarmers Insurance, Lumley, 70% of Insurance Manufacturers of Australia (RACV) and Coles Insurance.

SUNCORP own SUNCORP, GIO, VERO, AAMI, Shannon’s, APIA, Promina (formerly Royal & Sun Alliance), Just Car, Insure My Ride, Terri Scheer, Bingle, CIL, Asteron & Tyndall and are the 2nd largest insurer of Australians.

QBE (formed by BurnsPhilp as North Qld Ins Co Ltd, QI, Q = Qld B= Bankers & Traders, E= Equitable Probate & General Insurance) own Australian Eagle, Trade Indemnity Australia, Mercantile Mutual, bits of HIH, Elders and Cuna Mutual in Australia. QBE is the largest Australian insurer in Australia however 69% of their business is overseas business.

YOUi is owned by a South African insurer called Outsurance.

Budget Direct is owned by a South African Insurer called Auto & General. Auto & General Insurance also have Dawes which is owned by Calliden which specialises in the prestige end of the market and won't even write the business that Auto & General will write so there is no true comparison of insurers, only comparison of brands.

Real, Woolworths and Al Insurance are all owned by South African Insurer called Hollard.

Ever seen that stupid meerkat on TV claiming to compare the market? That meerkat is South African as he only compares products from Hollard and Auto & General.

Progressive is owned by an American insurer believed to be the largest motor insurer in Chicago.

All of this is called brand separation. When one company has 15 brands like Suncorp do, they get your money whichever way you turn.

Now lets look at the other comparison website “iselect”, they claim to provide choice. However they compare 9 brands underwritten by the same insurer. Now that's great! Whilst a duopoly in the Australian market can never happen, questionable marketing practices that lure people in under false pretences such as i-select and compare.the.market are well and truly out there.

Whilst you all moan about Woolworths and Coles holding such a large market share of the grocery game, have a think about who insures your assets?

Next time you want a fair comparison, on the best product for your circumstances use an independent broker and get real some advice, but then again most brokers get commissions or kickbacks from insurers, so tread carefully. Nothing beats making the phone calls yourself and doing your own research and find the policy and deal that is right for you.

Finding the policy and deal that is right for does not mean simply insuring with whoever gives you the cheapest premium.

    • Thanks very descriptive and helpful too.

    • cheers

  • what is the cheapest and best budget car insurance simply a ozbargain way of car insurance?

  • I reckon at the moment Dodo is the best considering you would get a free 7" android tablet even if it is worth $50 it is good deal I reckon.

  • I can't say who is cheapest. Bingle was cheap for me, but I asked coles to price beat bingle since the second year.

    • coles wouldn't price beat for my renewal (i.e. been with coles for 1 year, Bingle comes out cheaper for the 2nd year and coles won't price beat)

      • sorry to hear that.

My story was a bit different.
First year i paid bingle like 900.
Second year i paid coles 8xx after price beat bingle.
Third year coles sent me a renewal quote of 2k+, i got bingle's quote again and coles's price came down to 9xx including glass cover and roadside assistance.

        • Well. I switched. Not a big deal.

        • coles have gone crazy prices.
45% increase on my renewal this year.
          joke

        • Same here the increase was above 30% and they don't have price beat policy anymore, so I switched back to bingle now.

  • My 2010 Mitsashitty Lancer Fully Comprehensive has just gone from $415 to $623.71 In 12 months.

No claims ever in my 22 years of driving…all my insurances with them, other car, house, contents…..Goodbye Coles….Bingle showing $356.95……
