Dangerous car Mechanical Issue in highway

Hi all,

I'm telling you what happened yesterday and want your help to realize what's the reason/solution.
The story is me an my brother went to Melb from Adelaide on last Friday (800KM) with my Kia cerato 2009 Manual (70K ODO) and went back (another 800KM) yesterday. We were only 20KM away from Adelaide until my brother (the driver) said the gas pedal doesnt work (or engage) even though he could easily change the gear but there were no acceleration (it was hard to check if the motor create sounds or not). So with all the cars came to us, we managed to pull over the car.

after 2 min stop, we managed to move back the car into highway. This happened again after 10 min (again in 110 KM/Hr - gear 4 or 5). The same story happened again until I changed the driver and got the wheel. This happened to me again for the third time.

Here are the things that might important for you:

1- The car was serviced 1 month ago and I also asked about my cluthch from the mechanic in last 2 times and they say it's in good condition
2- When this happened I couldnt find any sign on my dashboard (no error or engine sign)
3- There were no smell coming from engine
3- The fuel thank was full
4- Car didnt turn of, it only couldnt engage the gas pedal (acceleration) to transmition until I pulled over, turn off the car and restart it again
5- The car didnt revving(I'm not 100% sure as it was stressfull with all cars coming to me)

Your help may reduce my stress and future cost.
Thanks in advance.

I also asked about my kludge from the mechanic

Yikes, there's your problem. You should have him take that out and replace it with a clutch instead.

What was happening when you were depressing the accelerator? Was the car revving, or was there no response to your input?

    • I cant be 100% sure if the car revving (as it was stressful time with all cars coming to me). but I think it was still rivving

      • You may need to go get a diagnosis at your regular mechanic.

My guess is manual transmission fluid needs replacing, which normally helps the clutch to engage/disengage. This could explain why the gear isn't working/failing 100% of the time.

But that's a complete stab in the dark.

Did you check under the bonut?

      (Obligatory bonut reference)

      • yea, no strange smell or wired stuff.
Also, the car is working perfectly after that and had no issues driving from yesterday.

  • Did you call the RACV?

    What did they say?

Is your Kia Warranty still valid?

    • No I didnt, as I dont have and it was public holiday. I could manage to continue driving after 2 full stops. It didnt happen again, but this makes it very unreliable specially for future interstate drivings.

There is no waranty as it is 2009 and 5 year is already gone. I bought it as second hand in 2013 (40k KM) and its not 73K KM. Had no major issue with it so far.

Sounds as though it went into some sort of limp mode to protect the engine or something. My car has done this a couple of times. It's a diesel, so some diesel system cleaner has helped stop the problem. When it occurred the car would idle, but pushing the accelerator didn't rev the engine. When it occurred for me I was able to stop the engine and restart and it would run fine for a while.

It could be starved for fuel, a blocked filter or something similar.

You need a diagnosis from a mechanic.

    • Thanks mate
