Why Is My Toshiba Laptop Slow?

Hey everyone,

My laptop which I bought very recently is quite slow. Nothing heavy use, just browsing forums and websites. I don't recall it being this slow the first couple of days.

Here's the link to the laptop I bought:
Toshiba Satellite P50-C00W 15.6 FHD/C i7-5500U/8GB/1TB/NVIDIA GeForce 930M

Thanks!

  • What have you recently downloaded or installed on it?

    • Other than Steam, nothing.

  • HDD. Replace or add SSD and put Windows on the SSD.

    • I was planning to in the near future but what I want to know is why it went so slow all of a sudden. Everything on the net is slow and laggy.

      • ok - usual response is 'have you tried turning it off and back on again', but assuming you've done that then if the speed of loading local applications hasn't changed then it could be your internet connection. Multiple possible causes there - check that speed from a different device is also slow and if so then it's your network not your laptop. If it's your laptop then check to make sure you have the latest updates to device drivers. Also try using a different browser eg chrome rather than firefox.

  • its probably just unfit. I was like that too. I started with some light cardio 1km/day then increased to 6km over 6months. Now i'm much faster.

    • with lycra?

      • not a cyclist. can't afford bike lights.

        • lycra gym nazi?

        • @oscargamer:
Haha too cheap for gym membership or Lycra for that matter.
Just runners from the clearance bin

          respect

  • Defrag the HDD.

Have you run Task Manager to see what memory you have spare & if anything is "eating" your memory? Have you filled your drive to near capacity? Have you run a RAM check utility?……………..it's a real "how long is a piece of string" situation unfortunately.

    • Yeah OP, show us a screenshot of Task manager.

  • Clear your browsers cache, do a disk clean and a full defrag.

    gone over data limit?

  • Install Hard Disk Sentinel and run a HDD check to see if there is any issue with the HDD. If HDD is healthy, it means background programs are causing the issue.

This is what I do when my computer is slow
Open run (Press windows key + 'R" key) and delete everything in:

    • temp
    • %temp%
    • prefetch
    • Cleanmgr

Might also want to call Toshiba or bring it in to a service center

  • I've never had one run fast.. we'll take the question as a comment.

  • I'll do what you guys asked when I get ahold of my laptop (y)

  • Just passing on previous advice I received on here about my underperforming (relatively) new Lenovo. Check your anti-virus. Mine (Avira) was slowing my laptop down ridiculously. Deleted it and it was like I had a whole new laptop.

First thing I do when someone tells me their PC or laptop is slow is to disable Superfetch. It is meant to be helpful but it causes constant hard drive activity and uses up the battery:

What is actually slow? The browsing or loading of apps or starting up.

    • Browsing the net, I don't use it for much more than that. Even after the pages have loaded, scrolling up and down can be damn slow. Still haven't booted it to try everyones suggestions though, will do today.

Which browser? Edge or Chrome or Firefox?

If restart doesn't work, update your browser and graphics driver.

What's the ambient temperature. Ensure all air vent holes are not blocked.

Both my laptops (HP & Lenovo) go really "woolly" following (or during) win10 updates. I have to reboot up to 6 times before they settle down. I wish I could work out how to stop them automatically updating. Both the March update & one last week created havoc!

general summary of stuff I'd do (I don't work in IT, but I did):

    • disable and delete all virus killing programs
    • install malware bytes and adaware, run scan, dont enable scheduled checks or monitoring
    • delete cache for all browsers that you use (and those that you don't)
    • get a thermal pad (laptop's cook)
    • change your virtual memory to be double your ram size (4gb ram, virtual should be static at double, i.e. 8192 for upper & lower)
    • check the space on your hard drive (c drive), dump photos and stuff onto an external

Not sure where I found it, but I stumbled across a new part of windows that let me disable the background apps that auto-load when the computer turns on which made a bit of an impact when I killed everything I didn't need

Beyond that, SSD or new laptop :)

    edit
or it could be an internet issue, try a different computer and see if that's any better

if it is, refer to above
if it isn't connect via ethernet

if it's faster - get wifi analyser on your android phone to see if someone else is on your channel, swap channels
if it isn't - change your speed settings to slower because it's probably packet loss

if it's faster - get ISP to check line quality
if it isn't - try a different modem

if it's faster - buy a new modem
if it isn't - swap to NBN

  • Phase 1 - Run Tron - https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/
    Phase 2 - ?
    Phase 3 - Profit

I've run this on brand new OEM units with nothing installed, and increased performance immensely once you trash all the built in OEM garbage.

  • Defrag your laptop. It will make it a bit smoother and faster, or change the HDD to an SSD

    I'm back!

So I've been flat out. This is the first time I've booted my laptop since my post, everything is running smoothly, I have multiple tabs open, etc.

I disabled superfetch and doubled V-ram, Also @skiller I use Chrome.

I'll bookmark this page and come back here if things start getting slow again. Thanks for the comments and help everyone, I may not have replied to every comment but I really appreciate your help!

If you want to see it really fast— right-click Computer/This PC>properties>advanced system settings>adjust for best performance. Then, tick>show thumbnails instead of icons, enable peek, smooth fonts, use visual styles. Apply.

It'll be very fast now. If you find you need any of the other settings later, you can always go back & re-tick them.

      ;)
