I thought it's a good price for a dimmable LED from a major brand. Checked my local bunnings and they have tons of stock.

  • 500 lumens, 60 degree angle. Looks like it has side vents.

    • Side vents good or bad?

Some people don't like the look. Others don't like that it creates a draft point for room temperature control. Or for dust to (very marginally) float down from the roof.

  • Anyone know if these are back-compatible with old transformers similar to this:

I'm testing this led on an old transformer (ild-et60) at the moment. it's been 30 mins and works ok so far.

      • Thanks. Now very tempted to get one because of the 500 lumens output.

      • Cool. Yep, would be interested to know if they work on old halogen transformer.

      • Cool, I bought a house with halogen down lights and have been wondering about this ever since. No idea where the transformer is either as there is no access to the roof cavity (doesn't really have one).

  • 12v for the curious

      Not really, MR16 are 12V. GU10 are 230V.

      • These are MR16 though

Yeah I know, says it in the subject and description.

        • @Maverick-au:
And you felt like telling me this..why?

And you felt like telling me this..why?

Same reason you felt like telling us it was 12V when it was already mentioned multiple times.

        • @Maverick-au:

And what reason would that be? That's quite a skill if you can see through to my intentions from a 4 word post

  • Just replaced 50 halogen downlights with Bunning click brand 6w leds . On clearance for $10 for 8. Didn't post as was unsure of stock levels. This was at Morayfield Qld. Maybe available at other stores

Good luck with those given they're such poor quality. Depending on the batch they suffer early failures, cause interference and some were recalled.

      • The only brand of LED downlights to work with our presumably older transformers are Philips. Osram and Click both flicker.
$10 for 8 is worth a go I suppose though. This 4 pack for $19.95 not really imo.

Click are crap and shouldn't be in the same sentence with Osram.

There are thousands of combinations of transformers and dimmers and both Philips and Osram are not 100% compatible with each combination but Osram are the better of the two. Don't discount a major manufacturer because one model did not work in your environment. I wouldn't be surprised if you purchased newer Philips bulbs and they flickered as it's hit and miss with newer bulbs and older transformers.

They're 8 for $10 because they're rubbish. Buy quality bulbs and you'll save yourself a lot of hassle. Your Philips bulbs will outlast Click by a factor of ten or more so you'll save money and time replacing them.

@Maverick-au: Plus I also got them cheaper than this deal ;)

      • Will let you know how I go.working fine at the moment

  • Currently using Phillip Master 5.5 400 lumens warm white, does anyone think this will noticeable brighter since this is 500 lumens?

    • +2

It will be a bit brighter yes. Subjectively it's a bit hard to tell a 50 lumens difference.

  • Thanks OP

  • A bit of unusual shape, how to fit this in a downlight housing?

    • A bit of unusual shape, how to fit this in a downlight housing?

The same way you would any MR16 bulb. The only difference is that these stick out the front of the fitting a little so are not suitable for glass fronted fittings commonly used in bathrooms.

  • I need to change about 80 lights at home to LEDs. They are currently MR16 50W halogen dimming on most. Would I be better off with changing globes to these, or look for Philips globes, OR, changing the whole fitting to LED fittings?
Priority in order is reliability, light output, energy savings.

    • if cost doesn't matter, change the whole fitting to LED.

but for me, an electrician quoted around $1000 for 23 new LED fittings and power sockets (supply and install) That's why I chose to just try my luck with these LED globes. I spent around 3 hours to change them all and it works fine so far. (I agree it doesn't look snappy cause it sticks out about 1cm out of the downlight cover plates)
