Slow Cooking Gas Usage Question

Off late i have been using a lot of gas - slow cooking some meals - wondering how much $ worth of gas i am using up if i cook for say 10 hours every other day.
Just after a rough range - as i know it would depend on my provider (agl) and the type of cooking range i have (omega)

thanks

See this piece of string? That much.

  • Ten hours every second day… I didn't know they made stove top slow cookers. Oh well… Regardless, no-one is going to be help in a useful way. Anything people provide is going to be such a wild guess it would be useless to you. You'd have to know your specific gas burner usage, and usage on the specific setting you select.

I wouldn't use gas for slow cooking. Water heaters have a gas pilot light, but that's much lower than slow cooking would require, and there's no way of knowing if it's too much while you're not home. A bit of rust could move in a jet/pipe, unblock the flow a bit more, increase the heat to where it boils the food dry until it catches fire.

I'd either get an electric one (which I will never own again after using… > > >), or, get a pressure cooker and make the same meal in 10-30 minutes. Chuck it in (you'd have to do that with a slow cooker too), set the table, have a shower, and it's ready.

  • Omega uses more gasses than agls

  • You could look at your gas meter before and after, then tally the difference. That assumes you can eliminate gas usage over the same period (Eg. gas hot water).

    • Along your lines, log usage over a number of days, mark the cooking and non-cooking datess. Average over a period should get you the answer.
Once you know, you can then let us know too.

    1) Turn any gas appliances such as water heaters off.

    2) Read meter and write down,

    3) Do slow cooking

    4) Read meter and write down.

    5) Subtract number from step 2) from step 4) to find gas usage.
