Precision Stylus

Hi all. I want to buy a precision stylus that allows me to write notes or draw on my touch screen laptop. I tried a few from ebay, but does not work well. Let me know any brand and any link to ebay that you can recommend. There are also some electronic ones, lyntec, anyone tried them? Your advice are greatly appreciated.

You can't use an active digitiser stylus unless your laptop screen supports it.

If it's just a standard touchscreen, the best you can do is a capacitive stylus that tries to mimic a finger. They're not that precise, and can never emulate pressure like a true active one can.

    • Do you know if there are software you can install on a touch screen laptop that supports a digitiser? Is the digitiser you referred to the one that you can see screen pointer moving as you hover the digitiser over the screen?

      • Similar to the pen used in samsung galaxy note?

no, that is a hardware thing.
if you want you laptop to act like a microsoft surface pro it needs the hardware to work.

Yes, that's the one. As PVA said, this requires special hardware support inside the laptop screen.

Now, some (rare) laptops come with active digitiser support but not the pen, so you can buy the pen separately and have it work. But that'd be listed in the spec sheets somewhere. If you can provide your laptop model, I can try to check that for you. I've only ever seen that happen on the 'convertible' types.

@htc: Unfortunately, that model does not have active digitiser hardware: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/…

Your options are to try to get what you can out of a capacitive stylus (as others have suggested), or get a new laptop that does have the hardware you need.

    I ordrered one of these,

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B7X4HOS/ref=od_aui_de…

I use it to draw on the iPad. I am very pleased with it, it's accurate and smooth to use.
I am not a big note taker, and I don't really like to carry things about with me, for me personally, I feel it may be a bit of a long stylus to just have hanging around my pocket (it's pen/pencil size in length and a bit thicker than the average pencil). Maybe you could find one of a similar range that comes with a pen clip to slip in a pocket etc, if that is something that would bother you.

The stylus itself is solid and of decent quality for the price paid, I left the second one and the spare nibs sitting in the box. The stylus comes with a sort of stew off end cap to cover the nibs up and protect from damage, but that would annoy me if I was taking it on and off all the time, so I don't use that bit.
I have had cheaper ones from eBay that fall apart or get lost, this stylus is far superior in build, there are no loose or badly fitting areas to it.

For my purpose of drawing i was overall pleased with it, it makes drawing quite enjoyable, and having used it could not step back. I have started to look at what else I could use the stylus for, but for me at the mo as it sits beside my bed/desk then it's really more of an iPad pen vrs and on the go pocket stylus

    • Many thanks for your detail comment. I thought the Adonit one looks overpriced compare to the ebay one. The one I ordered from ebay, the nib fall apart recently. So I learnt that even though the pen looks similar to the Adonit, the quality is very different.

Adonit makes a few precision capacitive stylus. I had seen someone use one to take notes on an iPad at uni. Unfortunately I cant comment on how well they work. Personally I decided to get a tablet equipped with an active digitizer so that I can take notes. Jb hifi sells some of the adonit stylus. Their staff could probably help you with that or better they could let you try one on one of their display laptops if the stylus itself doesn't come fully packaged.

I've tried the Adonit Jot Pro on a Surface RT before. It works well enough for bigger scribbles and drawings, but still lacks precision for smaller writing.

  • Thank you for your help.

  • I tried using adonit stylus for note taking (just to check how well it performs). I remember it being awful for me.
No palm rejection means you have to have your arm in an awkward angle (nothing can be touching the touch screen other than your pen).
Because I was not used to that angle for writing, I remember having hard time trying to write with it.

I bought one because it was cheap. Discounts on older model, I bought one thinking it's worth paying extra for the quality assurance. It was being used for games on tablet mainly. I don't even know where it is now.
