Where can I go and pat/hug doggies? (Melbourne)

I love doggies.

But I can't have one (they're too expensive and I'm not responsible enough).

Where can I go to pat them (without looking like a creep hanging around by myself in a dog park)?

I tried my local RSPCA, but all the doggies are behind glass cages, and you can only get a few fingers through the small holes in the glass :(

Happy easter Ozbargain!

Look for a cheap airasia/jetstar fare to tokyo and go to Dog Heart - we went last year and it's a beautiful little cafe near yoyogi park. https://www.timeout.com/tokyo/restaurants/the-top-10-animal-…

But a bit more closer to home, I'm a dog person - but if you can tolerate cats try https://catcafemelbourne.com/.

Our jack russell died last July, if you have a place that can take pets, it's also worth looking at something like madpaws.com.au. We've hosted about 6 dogs since January, and you get paid to look after dogs :) We're currently looking after a couple of cairn terriers right now and getting $300 to play with them for a week :)

I think there's another website which pairs up dog owners, and people who would like to look after them for a day, or walk them for an hour or so. Wins all around - you get a dog for a little while, the owner know their pet is being exercised, and the dog gets some attention. Can't remember the name of that website though.

Volunteer at RSPCA and hug all the dogs you want. Though you do have to walk them and clean up their poop.
I volunteered in kennels for 6 months and now I've switched to cattery to get my cat fix.

We have a few dog shelters around Perth, and they are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs and do jobs/cleaning around the kennels. They don't operate as a petting zoo, so you will have to work for it (like having a dog really)
Phone around your area and see which places are looking for help.

  • Try Dogshare. We've used a coupe of nice people who were happy to have our pup when we went on holiday. Or were happy to take him for the day/weekend or for walks.

  • you could try cats, I am sure a shelter would love you to give some TLC to the older moggies. They often get overlooked for kittens

  • Go to a dog park or dog beach. Fenced off area for dogs to socialise
