Hi my friends! Our area has just been connected to the NBN. Unfortunately, it is an FTTN connection. As you know, the max distance you can be from the node to get the max speed of 100Mb/s is about 500m theoretically on VDSL. My question is: how can I find out what MY line can support before so I know what speed to sign up for, ie 12/25/50 or 100 Mb/s? This seems chicken and egg dilemma to me!!
NBN newbie question: chicken and egg situation!

Typically a carrier is perfectly happy with you to upgrade your plan (in this case speed) under a contract. So you could sign up to 25Mbps and then if you are hitting the 25Mbps cap, decide whether paying more is worth it to you and move up to a higher speed.
You can try asking your telco, they sometimes have a method of estimating and there is ongoing work within the telcos to get better at this.
Also remember that as long as their are non FTTN connections on your node, you'll be under coexistence and get a slower speed. Once everyone cuts over and NBN reconfigures the node, the speed should improve.
When I called TPG, the answer I got when I asked the same question you have, to choose the plan best suited for me, they said they cannot even give me an average speed, so pretty much you wont know before you get it ! Ridiculous
TPG is a discount RSP, so don't expect much help from their customer service.
"It works and it's cheap" is the reason why anyone signs up to TPG…
Nope they're just telling the truth instead of making up bullshit like most other ISPs.
You cannot tell how shitful the copper cables that Turntard made NBN buy from Telstra are without testing them. But don't worry, Telstra picked up the maintenance contract to look after the asset they just sold so it's all good.
My provider was able to tell me what the max speed I was able to get was. (+ the quality of the copper between the node and my house)
Sounds like a helpful ISP. Can you tell us which ISP that is?
Telstra (surprisingly)
I'm not sure how much truth there was to what they were saying mind you. But, I'm on the 50mb/s plan and i'm maxing out the connection on speed tests. (the guy on the phone said I could have gone the 100mb plan and almost get full speed)
Huh… I asked them if they could advise the top speed and told me that no one can do that until I've connected to someone.
Why is that surprising? They just sold the copper network to NBN.
Came here just to say that the egg came first :)
Don't start!!
Start from the lowest tolerable speed and work your way up.
