I Dunno What Monitor to Get

Hi,

Welp, here goes some context.

I use the Dell XPS 13 w/ QHD+ screen, I need a monitor for when I get home cuz the screen is just too small to use. So, I'm looking a relatively big (25"+) and high res monitor, it would seem to be the logical decision since there's pretty much no reason for me to waste money on a FHD monitor because my screen is like nearly 4K (3200x1800).

I've looked at 2K monitors and they're truly not the best bang for buck, they're super expensive. However, I did find this: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-27-cinema-display-wqhd-25… It is a LG panel monitor (27") at 2K for $387 at the moment of this post. I kinda really want this because it's pretty much the best bang for buck rn. pause and realizes "this is kogan, is it really trustworthy?"

But then again, I'm contemplating over an Ultrawide monitor because they're quite tempting if you think of it, only thing that's stopping me from doing that is that it's 1080p (21:9 at 2560x1080). I can go up to the 1440p models but they're expensive as f, like 800+ and they're like 34" which has it's pros can cons.

Then, theres the last option, 4K, now this might be pretty dumb, it's super expensive, and I dunno if my hd 520 can even power the monitor. LOL! It's really tempting because I kinda really wanna transfer the money I paid for on the laptop to the monitor. If you get what I get mean.

Bare in mind, I'm just a normal Uni student, so I'm not rich, but I kinda want more, lol.

So moral of this post, what do I do? I've got 450 to spend.

Cheers.

  • The best monitor for you will be dictated by your usage scenario, what are you actually doing to be doing on the monitor?

Screen real estate vs. pixel density is partly preference and partly dependent on what you use the monitor for.

    • I use it for ableton, and it's a pain in the bum you see using three tiny screen and having to navigate through ableton is annoying

  • 27" 1440p is all you need.

  • unless you go 4k with 50+ inch, stick with QHD. with 27 inch to 30 inch, Dell's Ultrasharp is usually good bang for buck.

  • You should start using resolutions rather than marketing babble to talk about resolutions. I have no idea what 2K means and referring to a computer monitor as a progressive display is redundant.
