  • can i use to fry food?

    • Technically yes. It should also fry it quite well. I've done some light (so not deep) frying with coconut oil and found it quite nice as there's virtually not flavour to it. Not sure what temperature you'll need to run it at though.

As Spectator said, I used it ( the one from wooly ) on my wok-high heat without a problem. According to these sites and this its smoke point is 177C. But that would be an expensive deep fried though. A cheaper alternative is Rice Bran Oil has smoke point of 254C

ok so i guess its better for my car?

  • +1

I would stay away from this coconut oil because it is sourced from South Asia. From my experience Thailand coconut oil seem to be the best quality. I have tried coconut oil from Sri Lanka and Fiji before and they have a very strong odour when used in cooking. I guarantee that after trying the Thai coconut oil you will never want to buy these cheap ones ever again.

  • Frewer posting about frying oil lol

Didn't a NEW report come out stating that the claims of Coconut Oil were wrong and that it's actually BAD for you?
Pretty sure that's what i read.

    • -1

      No that doesn't make sense.

Its a natural fat, those aren't bad for you.

      • +1

Its a natural fat, those aren't bad for you

According to Prof. Claire Collins (Dietetics) coconut oil is >90% saturated fat, and although it does contain lauric acid which boosts HDL (good cholesterol) to help get rid of LDL (bad cholesterol), it actually makes LDL faster than it can make the HDL. So it's counter productive.

I highly recommend listening to any of the Triple J Dr Karl podcasts on which Prof Collins appears. Feb 9 is the most recent and the one which includes this info on coconut oil.

        • -1

There are no direct links to natural oils and their saturated fats being bad for the average person.

You can find a lot of technical information about all types of food but it doesn't mean that much on its own.

        • +1

@samfisher5986: Well if a natural oil increases your LDL levels, then it's bad. So yeah I think I'll take the word of a professor giving evidence from peer reviewed studies on the issue mate. She isn't one to pull info out of thin air.

        • -1

          @Flyerone:

I don't even believe that she said that coconut oil significantly increases Cholesterol/LDL, mainly because there is no study for it that shows that.

Mostly likely she was just pointing out that its not as beneficial as claimed, which can easily be true.

        • +2

@samfisher5986: Would you like me to link you to the podcast?

Edit: Podcast link added. And also, no-one said significantly, you added that word. She said it increases LDL faster than it can remove it.

Dr Karl JJJ with Prof. Claire Collins Listen from 14 mins.

It's very high in sat-fats. Mystical natural health-boost properties have yet to be scientifically demonstrated, but who knows. I just like the taste.

  • 208.9525 with 5% off.
Would have jumped on it if it was $208.9524.

  • did some research and it seems rice bran oil is still better, especially considering it only sells at $4 per L.

I just picked the first one at Coles and it's cheaper than this deal:
    https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/squeaky-gate-…

Plus all extra virgin oil is cold pressed or "raw", as far as I'm aware.

    • Coconut oil, not olive oil.

Ah fair enough, the latest health fad "superfood".

    • That's what the Mafia would have the World believe! ;-)

  • What to do with this much coconut oil ? Put on your wife

    Wait, wha?

  • Anyone know what the use-by date is? Now that summer has passed, I will have to wait another 6 months or so before I can use this at the beach.

  • +1

If you want to avoid saturated fats which increase your cholesterol and LDL… then stay away from coconut oil.

Coconut oil per 100g has 87g saturated fat, compared to Canola oil which only has 7g.

Even though it is natural, it is not healthy - especially if you're gonna buy 20L of it and use it in your day-to-day cooking.

    Lube?

    • +1

If your going raw with a virgin coconut, yes

    • Coconut oil makes good waterproof lube - could be handy in certain situations.

  • 20L is too much.
