    • if you are able to confirm these 5 dollar chinese jobs are any good then I'll take a gamble on em, otherwise I'll stick to something I know isnt going to fall apart in 5 minutes.

I've bought quite a few pairs of inexpensive sunglasses from aliexpress. my favourites are the plain rayban wayfarer polarised sunglassses for ~$2.20 delivered. they are polarized and UV400. very solid sunglasses. I've lost a couple of pairs from carelessness and have just grabbed another pair from my box of spares. I've also given away a few pairs to friends when we are out and it's sunny and they are squinting (I always carry a spare pair in my bag)

        • The risk with cheap sunglasses is they might not provide any protection to your eyes and instead make your eyes open wider when looking at the sun/glare. A really good way to fry your eyeballs.

        • @smileymiwo: that is very true with any sunglasses that do not have eye protection.

        • @altomic:
The difference he is talking about (I think) is that the AliExpress state UVA400, etc. but is it legit? I would pay more for glasses if I was sure of their protection claims which tends to be more reliable when backed by a brand name - UV really destroys your eyes.

        • Have you tested the "polarizedness" of it? If it's polarized as it claims, then i'll take a gamble too.

        • +1

@deeps: yes, i've test the polarization. there are several ways to do that. (1) hold the sun glasses up to a computer monitor (monitors all have a polarization film) and turn the glasses. if they are polarized then the screen/glasses will go black/very dark. (2) like (1) hold the glasses up against another pair of polarized glasses and turn. (3) use a polarization testing card - it's a simple image that shows a hidden image when viewed through polarized glasses. often sunglasses from aliexpress will be shipped with one of these cards.

@Tock: very true, we rely on the genuineness of manufacturers claims. but ribena was a trusted brand as was VW.

        • @altomic:

You can hold two pairs of glasses and look through both lenses.. then rotate one and you should see it darken and lighten too.

        • @deeps:

Don't suppose you know how to test for UV400??

        • @deeps: there's a relatively simple method using a UV light and a photovoltaic cell hooked up to a multimeter.

        • @altomic: Has anyone actually tested any of these Ali sunglasses for UV protection?

My three pairs arrived yesterday - quite impressed! Will probably order a few more.

Jump on them guys, you can't go wrong for $2.20

  • Is the quality of hawkers sunglasses any good? Frames looks hectic but there was mixed reviews about the lenses. if anyone owns these sunnies, would like to know if i could drive with these in direct sunlight.

    • +1

I've got a few pairs of Hawkers.

Great value if you can get them on sale. (~$30).

I'd say the lenses are quite good, the frames are just decent.

Primarily use them for cycling, beach and active things.

      • hectic, im gonna get 2 then hahaha, thanks for the help @googlevich

    • Mine are all scratched up now (all the colour has gone, I had gold lens ones and purple lens ones) but I failed to protect them properly

      • ahh, how long did they last?

        • +1

Purple one is 2 years old, gold one about 1.5. They're still usable like I went to the beach with them and didn't give a shit if they got ruined. But they just look a bit tattered lol. Look, here's a photo http://i.imgur.com/QbmTyqR.jpg my purple ones are worse but they're at home.

I would buy again at a better discount :P, maybe I need to take better care of them.

        • @ippy: wow that is not that bad lol, but yeah ive looked back on ozbargain on hawkers, so many good discounts in the past. should wait aye

        • @Zues981: well its deteriorated a lot lol. What you're seeing is 95% of the gold gone. When it was at 50% gone it did look a bit rough. Take care of your items, kids.
