Looking to get a half cabin boat to go out fishing.
Shopping around gumtree at the moment and are lot of used ones under 10k.
Any recommendations and tips?

So 9k budget. What should I get and look out for?
They were joking, suggesting a boat is a hole in the water you shovel money into.
My boating friend tells me the cost/value is all in the motor. Cheap boats have old or worn out motors. Costly boats have motors with plenty of life left.
He also doesn't like half cabins as he reckons it is a waste of usable space, but that is obviously opinion.
As a rule, boats requiring work are a disaster, as it is very time consuming to work on them.
If you're after a fishing boat you'd be best off getting a centre console or Boston Whaler type set up. All boats are a huge waste of money. So are jet skis. You'll enjoy it though so if you have the money to throw away … go for it and have some fun.
mskeggs's friend is right for smaller outboard vessels (< 18ft LOA)
Rule of thumb is 10% of purchase cost annually for maintenance but
ifwhen things go wrong this can quickly double … triple … etc.Also when things go wrong with the engine, for example, don't expect to just take it to a marine mechanic and they'll sort it out. My experience has been you take it to a mechanic and they have your boat for a few weeks. They tell you it's fixed. It isn't. Another couple of weeks. Again it's fixed. It isn't. Another mechanic. It's fixed. It isn't. They charge you even when it's not fixed too. Be warned :)

Wow … see, now I know why I don't own a boat!
The two happiest days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you get rid of it.
Half cabins aren't the most ideal boat for fishing.
Unless you need the cabin space for the family/kids, you're much better off getting an open style boat.. save some $ and weight too.
