OzBargainers and High Definition VICE

Hi, 'lo.

Just a quick 'public-service announcement', of a sort. Does warrant lower-case.
It may be of use to a small percentage of OzBargainers.

I was reminded of this, yesterday, when SBS's 2/VICELAND channel - in HD, popped-up as a viewing option via the idiot box idiot panel, channel list and guide.

I was around at an elderly relative's home, recently.
He has a decent, though older, LCD TV - MPEG4 compatible, but not one that automatically adds new channels. It required a re-tune for that.

I don't think that he will be all that fussed about missing-out on the SBS TWICELAND channel, in HD, for a bit, but he was certainly a little bit excited, otherwise. Less about the ABC being available in HD and more about the channel rearrange and cleanup, I think.

I'm now ".. a wizard", apparently.
Cool.
I have graciously accepted my new title, going forward…

(There is already a WT on OzBargain. Damn.)

A related poll and genuinely curious:-

How many OzBargainers rearrange channels as they choose/prefer?
How many leave the channel placement pretty much unaltered after auto-tuning?
Radio only, and not by choice :(

Always rearrange and cut out the junk or duplicate channels. Even had friends ask if I can do the same with theirs, I guess they couldn't be bothered learning how to do it themselves

    • couldn't be bothered learning how to do it themselves

You could make a lot of money out of that.

  • He must be happy now that he gets the boobie channel in HD.

    • If he keels from a heart attack this week, I will feel very guilty. Thanks :(

Should I ring and insist that he only watch the news with Lee Lin Chin?
I now fear that that may also be a risk. She is a foxy minx.

  • So, the wizard of oz is a tas-man? Seems about right

I have an optus box, and it gives you a whole bunch of 'teaser' channels, so I went through and set it to skip all the standard def channels when I set it to skip those.

Now I get to ask a question: Does the name David Firth mean anything to you?

      Brace yourself…

Just as well that I am up horrendously early.

I will be leaving the rest of this exciting thread for you to 'curate' for me, incidentally, after this here-unintended commenty-thing from me.
Are you up for that? Please.
      Good.

      G'day, Tiger.

Diji1 might actually remember this. Talk about TV channels and please be sure to cover the fact that Channel 7's Kerry Stokes once forced the gummint to make Australia one of only three backwater countries in the world to label 576p as 'High Definition'. Yep, that was the price he extracted back then, for agreeing to support Digital Television, at all.

Make me proud with other information like that, Padawan.
      :-)

David Firth. I am actually aware of him - if the one you mean. I can see that I left a blue thumb on the third-video channel trailer from two years ago. I didn't accede to his demand to subscribe, at the time. There will be a channel bookmark/video that points to stuff to 'watch later', somewhere. The watching later part may still not happen. You can link a couple of specific videos that you enjoy, if you wish.

Only two videos from him in the interim. I'll subscribe, but I don't think that I will follow him on twita. He is clearly very talented, but maybe a little bit off-centre. Like you, Outlander?
      :)

Btw, the thumbnail for that video I linked for you (in message back when, with discussion on a few imperatives of time) is, as of recent, cyclone-relevant, in this part of world.

Oi and BTW. Did you see this? You were meant to. I kinda figure that Batboy saw it, but maybe wasn't amused.

Just a bit of additional foolery, on the day. Granted, it was a serious one, and followed by worse. Scrooge McDuck's friend lost 45 million dollars at the casino. Must've done. Terrible :(

A bit of fun for me, though, seeing very existence of Youtube videos on bit of Tupperware unchanged since I was a little boy pointing at shiny things. A bit like seeing a New Car review on a Holden Kingswood, or First Ride impressions of the Ducati Darmah. Very much excite.

      Now, curate my thread, Outlander.
Say nice things if any other OzBargainers visit. OzBargain is weird and anything could happen. You have noticed that.

Permission to chide Batboy if he pokes his head in from baby-bum-wiping duties.
I hope that he is tired. That'd be good.

      :)

Ah Tas.. I always feel like you're trying to tell me something in code, but it's one that I'm not quite smart enough to figure out (even if I do get the references..well most of them)

Can't add much to this topic I'm afraid, don't watch too much television live myself. Something interesting I did discover was that they used mpg-2 encoding as the standard instead of the vastly superior mpg-4 for the main channels in order to reduce hardware costs BUT they chose to use it for the some of the additional channels because of the low bandwidth available. What it means is that some of the older set top boxes can't receive all the channels, and one day soon will probably be rendered obsolete. What can you do.. Ya can't stop progress.

Yes, the David Firth connection was based on the Aphex Twin video you linked me. What can I say, it stuck in my head. His videos is the only other place I've seen Aphex Twin mentioned. A tenuous connection, but sometimes intuition pays off. "Milkman" is probably the main one on that front, though I might slap a trigger warning on that. Not as much a fan of that term as our dearly departed cricketer, but that video probably deserves it.

Were you affected by cyclone? Hope that's a no

        Did you see this?

I did. I don't keep a watch on your comments (maybe I should?) but when I happen to cross your path, I'll confess I take a little looksee at the recent comments. Not sure I should be concerned you're talking about me behind my back, or happy I made Tas's shitlist. God knows JJ had to work harder than I did to earn a place on it :3

        Keep it real Tas

        • +1

There was a little bit of talking behind your back at one point! Many months ago and only because you were presenting in quite a worrying way, at times.

Neither of you are on any shitlist. I only ever bother to stir people that I'm fond of.

Some people I know were directly affected by the cyclone. Some relatives further afield hit by some flooding.

You are having a bit of weather down in Melbourne today. Looks a bit nasty. Stay dry.

The caped and cowled-one is laughing now…
          Bloody hell.

Squashed to unsquashed, I like to think of compression codecs as being invisible digital nerf.

        • @Tas:

Righteo. Sorry to hear about the rellies, I heard on the news that they were fining people making the best of a bad situation by using boats to traverse. Talk about kicking a man when he's down :o

          bad weather

Just a bit, but not a problem for a man with a raincoat

Did you end up listening to the death note soundtrack?

        • +1

          @outlander:

I did see the first two Death Note films. First one, pretty early on. CGI in that - easily the best I had seen up until that point, in anything. Very good and genuinely creepy.

Usually, and still, hate CGI. Very difficult to suspend disbelief with that stuff, I find, even now.

Wikipedia indicates that I have a lot to catch-up on, with those films.
Also, almost a month back in my Youtube feed, at the moment.. Yep & frowny face.

Bear with me, with any suggestions. I will get to various things, eventually!

          Famous last words.

Rellies will be ok and thanks.
If you haven't had to deal with at least one bushfire + pegged-out washing on a clothesline with water past your knees, you haven't really lived in the bush.

        • @Tas:

          I..I…can't. te
ll. if You RRR being sarcast-ic, but I WILLL let you know I hate everything about that film. I'm just going to move past it

You're funny, you remember every little detail about everyone but you forget yourself. When you showed me the Aphex twin music I said it reminded my of L's Theme from the Deathnote OST ( The anime, not the movie-on-a-porno-budget production)
You said it was too similar to be a coincidence, and that you wished I hadn't said that because you felt forced to investigate it and you already had too much to do.
Then you had a meltdown and disappeared for a while, as you are prone to do. Left me wondering if you ever found the connection

By the by if you want to know why anime is worth watching this scene from deathnote says it all. 2 minutes long

        • +1

          @outlander:

I am up and just finished listening to III - yes the one you meant with the Near/Nannou rip, which I actually do like. :P to you for thinking that I would not check that old message of yours to confirm. Soundtrack as whole, very good.

Soundtrack to first non-anime remembered as crap, anyway - however vaguely. Can't remember other at all. Movie content, let's leave aside.

I need to go to bed. Don't reply to this, Bastardface.

Maybe the first and one of only few soundtrack albums that I own. I think maybe only a hint of track in actual version of movie seen at the time, but this was the reason for buying it.

Don't hurt your ears, but really must be played loud. Safer through speakers, even with watered-down youtube audio. If still awake, now, play it during day. Don't wake the neighbours. Enjoy.

          @outlander:

Other than music, The Internet should only be updated with very occasional advice, and keen observation.
e.g. Money doesn't grow on trees.

          Goats, do

Such can be posted as deals, on sites like OzBargain, but only when observed to be ripe or fallen to ground.

          Purpose of The Internet, summarised.

          …meltdown..

          ?

Seeking to spend less time on The Internet in order to avoid numb-bum and bot-rot, is a very noble quest, indeed.

I fear for some OzBargainers, and not just you.

'Rumour has it' that Tightarse had to have his arse surgically removed, and is now just Tight. He is contemplating changing username, but is waiting until actual head-in-a-jar status. Altomic already has some sort of OzBargain 'neural-input' thing going on, I believe.
Other rumour is that greenpossum has no remaining fur on his tail. None. That's bad. Winter is coming.

Mods almost certainly have pimples on their bums.

I fear that the poll numbers above won't be statistically significant and that can't be good - as an observation.

This thread somehow went off the rails. Just so you know, I blame you, outlander

          Be good.

          :)

          @Tas:
You disappoint me Tas! Hoping for more from you. Yes the Deathnote soundtrack is amazing, but after hearing that it seems large parts are plagerized. I was expecting you to paint me a picture of bolded words and blue hyperlinks hinting at radical websites

The tune is an interesting one. I like it, but I see it as being difficult to fit into a playlist that doesn't include video game effects and the supersaiyin powerup music
More interesting is the film its from. Christian Slater was a bit of a role model in that one when I was a kid. Took me a while to find the name

          LOL to the rest

You want to blame somebody don't blame me. Blame it on the boogey

Edit: Special late night bulletin for you, straight from the desk of bastardface :-)

          @outlander:

Never check your email even near to midnight, or a bloody Gremlin named Outlander might just be in it…

I'm not at all sure what the word 'plagerized' means, but I'm sure that David Newman (and Danny Elfman) influences are present in shelf on shelf of videogame music.

One day, in the very distant future, I may link you some of the very best 8-bit chiptune music, but only if the really good stuff (with a twist) is on Youtube. I doubt that. In meantime, I may look for a more recent track that I will have on a playlist somewhere, from the one videogame-related composer that I subscribe to. She's a star, and track is great. I will post it below - sometime in the next six months.

You like anime, so will like the thumbnails on the ENM channel. I'm subscribed to that, but have no clue as to how much of the music they post is video game (or anime) related. Some occasional highlights in stuff they post, anyway.

          I disappoint you?

Ok, apparently I have to do everything around here?

OzBargain Nightowls, forgive him. This is what he was meant to link for you, in response to my comment. You can lead a Gremlin to water…

          https://youtu.be/WfR4nye9UZc

Get at least some sleep if you can.
I'll spare you the Taylor Swift one. That one, above, not too nightmarish.

          This one, however, is.

          :-)

          @outlander:

This is the track that I was referring to. A Bandcamp link is in the description for higher quality audio- https://youtu.be/EgkISsZG34I
She is a sweetheart and a real talent.

Enjoy, and have a great Easter.

  • VICE has turned to crap ever since it went full on mainstream.

  • I leave channel numbering as is. Just delete all the crap like Racing, Extra, TVSN, Spree and duplicate SD stations, leaving the main channels in HD only.
