Silicon Valley Job Offers: Facebook or Linkedin?

Hi all,

I've had a pretty successful excursion to Silicon Valley recently and have been offered Software Engineering roles with both Facebook and LinkedIn. The number of the offers are similar and have been made at almost exactly the same time, so it's an agonising decision. What do people think of these respective companies, anyone with experience working with either?

Comments

  • Need more info. Will the roles be more support or product development?

    • Development

  • -1

no, this is ozbargain not ozcareer

  • Not having any knowledge about the work environment in either, but basing my decision on website features, I would have thought Facebook has more to offer than LinkedIn when it comes to innovation… therefore perhaps the more interesting choice?!

  • LinkedIn has been bought by Microsoft in case you didn't know. I want to know more about your "excursion".

    • Excusion was two final round interview days with both companies. Each went for most of the day with lots of algorithm and architecture rounds. This followed phone interviews involving two algorithm challenges per call in the months leading to the trip (which was fully funded)

      • I take it you applied directly to these companies from Australia. Are you going on E3 visa?

        • Yes direct. And yes to E3 visa as well. The recent clampdowns on the H-1B probably plays into my favour during current salary negotiations, unless the US govt is about to clamp down on E3 as well.

        • @w8: Well done. I am too old now. One thing for you is if you like more FrontEnd dev Facebook should be better as they made react but for more backend work Linked in probably is better as made kafka.

  • Any tips for a future software engineer? Will finish my masters at the end of this year.

    • +1

Have personal projects is my advice. You will learn so much more. I have many years experience in the industry, and I have always had pet projects on the side which has put me ahead of my peers by day. If you are absorbed in something you will learn more and be more valuable. There's always a big distinction between enthusiasts and those who are in the industry "because a friend told me it pays well".

  • Does the pay differ much between offers?

I think Facebook is more well known than LinkedIn.

  • By the numbers

Revenue per user at Linkedin is 85cents.
Revenue per user at Fcebook is 86cents.

Number of Registered users at Linkedin is 161 million.
Number of Registered users at Facebook is 900 million.

Now its your decision where you want to head if you want to make your career at a professional world with innovation targeting to corporate or potential employers then Linkedin is your world.

However, if you want to go massive and crazy idea for everyone, then facebook awaits you.

    Goodluck.
