Buying Champagne Duty Free Melbourne or Just Buy Locally?

Hey everyone,

We're going on a little holiday on Saturday and looking to get a few bottles of Champagne (possibly some Veuve) to take on holiday to Malaysia. The question is do we buy locally here in Oz and place in the luggage, or is it going to be cheaper at Duty Free at the airport?

The prices in Malaysia seem to be much higher than home and we're trying to not spend too much money at the hotel especially the crazy drink prices.

Thanks,

Dan.

  • Most airport duty free shops have an online store now (where you pre-order and collect at the airport).

It will most likely be cheaper at duty free, unless you find it on sale at your local liquor store.

  • Buy locally and if you spend over $300, claim TRS and get the WET tax refunded. It's a sizeable amount.

    • +2

Considering the duty free limit in Malaysia is 1 litre, it better be very good bottle if you're going to spend $300 on it.

Dan's will be cheaper. Duty free shops generally only give a better deal on spirits where there is a lot more duty to pay.

If you drink spirits, then take a bottle of good vodka etc. Depending on where you're going you might just be better buying it in the tax free areas of Malaysia(Langkawi, Tioman etc.) you might be better buying over there.

    • As long as you pack it in your checked in luggage. Can't take liquids in your hand luggage, so you would have to pick it up at the duty free once you go though security.

  • I'd buy it there. duty free in Oz is a jib.

  • Dan Murphy's buy six, put one in each travelers check luggage, leave what's left in the fridge for when you get home.
