Windows 10 - 100% Disk Usage in Task Manager - What a Joke

I bloody hate that we're forced to use windows 10, maybe if it wasn't so buggy and slow it would be fine. Simply searching '100% Disk Usage in Task Manager' brings up hundreds of complaints on the same issue with new computers. I have a brand new Kaby Lake laptop - I am forced to use windows 10.

Not everyone has this problem of course, but I'm having the same issue. I'll probably need to do a clean wipe as there is probably bloatware but does anyone have any other ideas on fixes? While google had a lot of conversations on it - nothing really fixed it for me - microsoft apparently don't care

And on a side note, while I know computers, imagine just some average joe buys a computer and is faced with the slowest processing out - because of a stupid bug, how are they meant to know how to fix it. What a joke

  • You're not forced to use windows at all lol

Do you have a old PC?

    • Sure you aren't forced provided you don't want to upgrade to Kaby Lake or later, you aren't forced.

Unsure of situation on AMD processors.

I have a brand new PC, with Kaby lake

      I believe I am forced

      • -4

maybe if you didnt want windows you would choose better components

        • -3

Any suggestions, seeing as Kaby lake is the latest chip from intel they have released..

          Dumbass

        • shit i forgot you have to get the latest chip out. my bad..

        • @universe:

It's ok, sorry for the comment

        • +1

@Truthbe: What the hell does that latest chipset have to do with the OS you use, if you have a Windows 10 licence then you can install any previous version of Windows as the licences are valid.

There are Linux distros you could use as well.

        • @pjcook:

          Google it

        • @Truthbe: Well there you go I wasn't aware of that…… Apologies for my impertinence.

        • Its nice to see so many people jump on the OP without any knowledge of what Microsoft and AMD are forcing onto people…. and so adamant about being wrong too!

Best Operating system ever from microsoft.

    • -3

      Best AND worst actually

Have you looked at what processes are causing the issue?

click on the DISK tab to sort processes by disk usage percentage.

    • Yes already have, its definetely a bug because nothing maxes 2% - something hidden

Might be time to upgrade the duo core to something more modern :)

Might be time to read the title again.

Yep, Windows 10 does a lot of wierd shit.

MS is using you as beta tester for enterprise users. Enterprise users stay several months behind consumers and aren't forced/malwared into updating.

  • Does "Windows 9.5" get around your issue: https://youtu.be/XzSSidHU54g

  • Lots of factors but I can't tell exactly but since you mentioned new laptop I would say it's probably updating (or preparing to update).

Twice like these happen to me since I started using Windows10. I just usually leave my computer for <hour without doing anything and freshly boot will "probably" help the background task to finish faster.

People would hate me saying Win10 still the best OS despite this issue lol.

    • I'm curious to why you think windows 10 is the best

      • -2

I think people say it's the best because it's modern and better than anything Microsoft has given before. Having said that, it's a buggy inefficient mess and it forces users to do things in ways that they don't want to. I think that distance between what it could be and what it is, is what drives people up the wall.

Looking forward to when android becomes the new Windows

        1. Stability wise it's great, almost at the same level kernel wise as XP

        2. Runs well on older hardware, tell me the same about Windows 7, Windows 8 and any version prior, just never worked as good as 10 on older hardware

        3. Never has issues, sure I hate the metro UI, fixed in 5 minutes with start 8 and back to the start menu I love

        4. Decent virus / malware scanner built in, love it or hate it Windows defender isn't actually too bad

        5. Decent gaming performance, I have an nvidia graphics card so it's quite good with my Intel 6th gen setup ( one version prior to yours), I have no issues with my hardware, everything works well and the system is rock solid, drivers are decent and I get excellent gaming performance, almost identical if not better to Windows 7

People can't adapt to change, Windows 10 in the enterprise world is great, having everyone on the one platform makes my life easier as an IT professional, no stuffing about people come in, log on and do their work, All systems are managed by my WSUS server

Apart from this I personally think windows 10 is one of the best operating systems out there, sure it's got that horrid metro UI but 5 mins and that's fixed, I remember to this day when I installed XP and said this is the best OS ever, AI feel the same about Windows 10, it's a good all round Operating system

As a side note, you shouldn't be stuffing around with page file settings if you don't have the ram to support it, windows 10 needs a minimum of 4gb but ideally 8 to run smoothly, I have 64gb of ddr4 ram so my system doesn't need to swap to HDD but i find it odd that this was the cause of the fault

I have a 960gb ssd for Windows OS so possibly that explains why it's not an issue for me as a spinning disk would be much slower to swap etc

      • Got it for free, at least you can get it cheaper than Win7.
Loves my multi-screens setup more than my old Win7 (lots of features here).
        Boots faster.
        Better search capability.
        Better taskbar.
Has good built-in mail/outlook app plus the action center for notification.
App screen snaps (and it's shortcut win+cursor).
Wifi management is simpler in action center.
        Paint is better lol.
Can run latest everyday and development applications and DX12 games.
Im a old school Linux dev guy but I like the modern design of Win10 and the touchscreen experience on my tablet is pretty good.
Smarter memory management and better VM experience (maybe using better machine?).

        But some I don't like that much…
        - Settings, I have to switch to classic mode everytime.
        - Windows Store experience is good but I find it not that useful maybe just yet especially searching for apps/tools I always end up in googling.

Win7 feels ancient every time I go to the office but thankfully got a new job that uses Win10 machines.

You need to learn how to customise Windows 10 to turn off all the crap. #1 thing is automatic updates which they made a lot harder to turn off. I don't understand how you cannot find the process causing the 100% disk usage if you know computers. This is pretty basic stuff. Also lots of 3rd party tools to help. Windows 10 is great but you need to know how to cut it back to barebones without all the extra crap they throw in with it.

  • What brand/model of computer do you have? Then someone may me able to help you.

  • Have you left it on overnight, or for an extended period (a day or two) to see if it is a disk management process of some sort that is constantly being restarted when the disk state changes, so never completes?
What processes are using CPU and memory when you first start the machine?
It could be a bug, or it could be something fixable in your configuration. I don't think MS have hidden processes that thrash the disk without reporting their performance in taskmanager. The Tom's hardware link has a bunch of novice users posting thought bubbles about what they might think is happening, and a couple of knowledgeable users offering suggestions - it doesn't inspire confidence that any systematic trouble shooting has been tried.

Start by disabling all the unnecessary startup items on your PC.
Is it still happening while the machine is freshly booted and sitting idle?
If no, consider what applications could be the culprit, if yes, time to follow up disabling things like search indexing, virus scanning etc.

  • imagine just some average joe buys a computer and is faced with the slowest processing out

I just mucked around with the page file size. Not sure what I did, but now fixed. Was going to up the RAM from 2GB but now won't bother.

    • This fixed it, thank you

  • +1

mine was caused by a faulty driver + memory leak + low memory on the system
this causes excessive paging = 100% disk usage
what is your memory in use memory usage what is your commited memory use

  • get a decent antivirus

I had this problem on my HP desktop. It has 2 hard disks, and after a few minutes running time, one HD would go to 100% usage for a few minutes, then settle down, then 100% again and so on. Was unusable. Nothing useful in Task Manager. I tried various analysis tools, ran diagnostics on the HD, including from the manufacturer, all no problem other very high I/O, and no process identity. After 2-3 months of trying all the 'fixes' (drivers, turning off features, etc) on various forums to no avail, I removed the offending HD and plugged it into another computer. That computer couldn't read it, the partition table was corrupt. Rather than more stuffing around, I bought a new hybrid HD, and used those short windows of access to the dodgy HD to read the contents and copy it to the new HD. Problem fixed!

I was seeing 100% disk usage on boot up, which isn't unusal for any OS (my Mac does it too) but it subsides after a few minutes after logging in.
Last week I added an SSD, problem solved.

  • I have windows 10
    Never had an issue
Sounds like malware / bloatware to me

    • -1

      I think you're right, Windows 10 is malware/bloatware

      • +1

        Your opinion
        Not really valid at all
        Windows 10 is rock solid
Perhaps your old hardware is the fault
I've had nothing but perfect operating with windows 10

Although i don't use the cheap version of it, i have enterprise and pro on my network

        • Although i don't use the cheap version of it, i have enterprise and pro on my network

Which you almost certainly don't need =/. Good way to invest your money before realising that BSD/Linux should drive your network back end and would cost you nothing.

          Windows 10 is rock solid

That just isn't true. BSD/Linux is rock solid. Windows, by comparison, is a leaky bucket.

        • You sound a bit fanboyish

        • Your opinion. You said it.

  • +1

It's often a combination of windows updating, windows defender, search indexing etc. It DOES settle if you just leave it on overnight and let it do it's thing.
    SSD = zero problems however.

    • Yeah after leaving it to do whatever it was doing for a day it fixed it completely

  • PEBKAC :P

    1703 is out next week.

    • Step 1. Take laptop out of box
      Step 2. Press on button

      PEBKAC

      • should charge it too
