eBay Pricing Themselves out of The Market?

Are eBay's days numbered based on their continual greed? I don't see how these token gifts offered to both buyers and sellers can compensate against the obvious… that is china. Will eBay wake up and become competitive before it's too late?

  • The increasing frequency of their sales makes me think they're desperate to grow (or maintain) customer numbers.

Their fees are a real turn off - anyone with the ability to sell elsewhere would be doing so.

I dread the day when they start trying to charge people for selling on Gumtree - hopefully an alternative is ready and waiting in the wings.

They kind of already are. For advanced selling features on gumtree, they're introducing upgrades for listings, it costs money to edit your listings past the 12 hour period and when your listings expire, they charge you a few bucks to keep it posted on the top of the list again.

I think this is as far as they can go. They need to keep gumtree free there is no other way, not with facebook available people will just sell on facebook and forget about gumtree in an instant!

ebay's biggest revenue stream as of 2015~2017 comes not from casual sellers of second hand goods, but from retailers looking to expand their distribution and marketing channels. Like Dell, GreysOnline, all the mobile phone stores and computer part shops that you can think off, is using Ebay as a platform to reach out to the 'mass market'

Ebay is a well known brand and a very reliable vehicle for making sales. They have a mobile phone app, they have billboard signs and everyone knows what eBay is.

What eBay should be afraid of is Amazon — they are eBay's biggest rival (even across international borders).

This is an extract of an email from PayPal to our business. (We have a PayPal Here facility but don't sell on eBay.)

The benefits of selling on eBay
eBay’s no longer just a place to auction off used goods. These days, almost 80% of items sold on eBay are brand new. Many great brands have started selling on eBay to capitalise on the 8 million unique visits to eBay.com.au every single month.

        • @Figarow I agree with your sentiments re Facebook.
Of the back of Snapchats success Facebook have recently added a similar feature.
Facebook could potentially replicate eBay combined with Google wallet.

IN relation to Facebook market place, once the feature expands to desktops I think it will really take off.
There is a real opportunity in the North American market to offer end users a user friendly alternative to Craigslist and Kijiji which are stuck squarely back in the 90's.

  • its already too late..amazon will be here very soon

those measily 20% off sales with be a distant memory

    • How does Amazon stack up as a seller?
      Are there fees/commissions less?

      • Are there fees/commissions less?

I think they're almost the same as ebay (in the US)

How does Amazon stack up as a seller?

Selling process (a few years ago) felt much more slick:
        - Don't need to add extra product info/description/photos - just shows up as a 3rd party seller on an existing item
        - Shipping labels are streamlined via fedex/ups/usps

Most of the time there arent bargains on FeeBay anymore. i used to be a powerseller and gave up my shop a few years ago. I hardly look there anymore unless they have a 20% off sale.

same, i used to sell alot of gray market imports, and the prices from the bigger sellers got lower than my buy price and i stopped as well.

Never thought of importing a different colour instead?

  • No.

  • Definitely getting a little desperate.. I'm really thinking about creating many an account with different emails. Thought I'd give it a try last time they had the 20% off so i could use more than 3 times and then today i get a targeted 20% off In the new account only on any an all items.
