Duped by Someone Who Bought My Laptop. What Are My Options?

Guys,

I had put my laptop on sale on Gumtree. Got a call from someone who claimed to be a student of Melbourne University. The guy came to my house on Friday evening to collect the same and appeared genuine. We agreed on a bank transfer of the payment since he had a Macquarie account. He transferred using the his iPhone app and shared the transaction receipt with me as well. Today is the third business day and the payment still did not come into my account so I looked at the receipt again and I noticed that the when part says Saturday 25th March 2017. It seems he scheduled the payment for next day and then cancelled it afterwards. When I looked at the receipt, I only looked at the BSB and my account number to make sure they were correct and the amount transferred. It was a small oversight but it has costed me a brand new MacBook Pro :(

I replied to the guy on the email he sent me the receipt and he even replied yesterday saying that he has checked everything at his end and that he can come and meet me on Thursday to make sure everything is fine. I have the serial number of the laptop and I have the transaction receipt that he shared with me. Can I go to the police and file a report? Is there any chance that payment from Macquarie to Commbank may take more than 3 business days. Not sure what my options are at this point. Thanks in advance.

i dont get why people accept things like bank transfer for face to face purchases……..

    • Can they take more than 3 business days under any circumstance. In anycase i think i have been duped. I am not expecting that money to come into my account. I work really hard for my money and i am really sad to see it go away like this.

      • Macquarie bank arent the quickest but the longest i have waited is and a bit days for a firt time payment to go through.

I'm sorry, you went to all that trouble, and didn't take cash. This is an unforgiving forum sometimes.

I normally take cash only but the guy appeared genuine. Asked all the right questions, said all the right things, even things such as what course he was doing at the uni, his hostel room no and stuff. Basically the smoothest sounding crook that I have come across. Can i go to the police? Also i have the serial number of the Mac? Can the police track it?

    • You can go to the police. I would call the police assistance line or the equivalent in your state
      http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/services/when_do_i_call_pal_131…

They are not going to dedicate someone to tracking down one laptop, but if they come across the stolen property and have your serial number on file, they could give it back to you. If they receive a lot of similar reports of the same guy doing it, then they might be able to put a person on it.

Basically don't get your hopes up, but you definitely should report it, you never know what will come of it.

As it involved gumtree you also could report here as they do online trading issues

    • Why does he need to tell you a story about his uni course, room number etc? To me that's suss.
When I go to buy something, it's payment and leave.
      At least he replied though.

    username checks out

  • did you get any ID of the buyer? No way can a bank transfer take longer than 2 business days, if he really did do it Monday before say 3pm, you should have received it Tues but definitely yesterday at the latest. Give up hope on seeing the money hitting your bank account, it aint going to happen.

  • any info on this? and yes over a few grand diff bank to bank it can take a long time.

  • how about………calling the bank and asking them?!?!?!?!?

  • so, did the money come through?
