Use Android Tablet as a Phone - is it possible?

Hi everyone, is there any way of turning an Android tablet such as the:

FNF Ifive Mini 4S Tablet PC 7.9 inch Android 6.0 RK3288 Quad Core

for use as a phone tablet? i.e. make phone calls?
i know the ASus Fonepad is the only real 'tablet phone' available in Australia

what about a Samsung Tablet?

  • you will need a tablet with a sim slot and compatible with Aus network bands.

  • The tablets that can be phones have the radio transceivers to connect to telcos. It's not something you can do as an afterthought.

  • Dude you need a phablet…..I've got a Cube T8 which came with a Sim,GSM 900/1800MHz; WCDMA 2100MHz; TD-SCDMA: B34/B39; FDD LTE B1/B3; TDD B38/B39/B40/B41
No B28 though, its a grey import and been working for over 9 months ( he says in amazement)

    • I loved mine, but it died. Too much flex in the plastic frame, I think.

  • If it has cellular you can use any Voip client, or if you are happy to use it only when wifi is available, the same applies.
Mynetfone, for example, have a android client and they will give you a phone number people can call.

  • I don't know.

But if it's not a built-in feature then any device you add to it to make actual phone calls would pretty much be a phone anyway. If it's home phone functionality you need then you can get VOIP plans.

I never understood why there weren't more phone-capable tablets (beyond phablets), considering there's more space in a tablet and the why-not factor.

  • It is possible. I'm currently using an old Sony xperia z3 tablet compact 4g and it seemed like a good idea in the beginning since the thought of having a nice 8inch screen to browse the net and play games was really appealing. Also I thought I'd save a few bob not buying separate phone and tablet devices. If you are intent on going down this path, a Bluetooth headset is a must. The stock speakers on my device broadcast your conversation for all to hear so you'll have no privacy without one. I find that I barely touch my phone when out and about since its usually stashed away in the missus's handbag. Even with a smaller tablet screen size of 8 inches, it's very difficult to carry around, especially in warmer weather when you're less likely to be wearing a jacket. I honestly wish I didn't go down this path since I am accustomed to the larger screen and am unable to go back to anything smaller despite the inconvenience its size adds. The dreadful thought of me poking my pinky finger at something the size of an iPhone keeps me continuing my love/hate relationship with my tablet phone.

    • This little app saved my life

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=opotech.finevo…

      Fine Volume Control V2 Trial

The unlocker or pro version costs $3.59 aud (well worth it imho until Android companies and developers catch up)

Normal android system volume controls go from 0 to 15 (some even only go from 0 to 10 I think) so what this does is allows you to go further into it from 0 to 100 aka more smaller increments.. which is so goddamn handy so goddam handy.. personally I would have wanted more from 0 to 1000 but that is kind of nitpicking now and but hey this is still better than good for now for my purposes somewhat so I am not complaining in the slightest.. for now haha lol.

For example on my phone volume 1 or the lowest non mute volume is 8% of total volume which for my loud Huawei mediapad m3 tablet with boom blasting Harmon Kardon inbuilt speakers it is still somewhat for me anyways super loud on minimum volume especially at night when browsing YouTube/gaming or playing music. With this app I can tweak it down to around 4% for my listening pleasure or even down to the lowest 1% if the environment or area requires it say for example in a train or library.

There is a disclaimer from the Google play app store page though which is kind of very important so make sure to check that it fits your needs and use case scenarios and requirements before unlocking it.

This is a 7-day time-limited but fully featured trial. The app is not fully compatible with all phones, please verify that all desired functions work correctly before purchasing.

      Also

      *** CAUTION ***
There is a bug that affects some devices/ROMs and causes the volume to briefly jump to a high value when you change the volume. Unknown cause and no fix available.

This app does not work 100% on all phones and is not guaranteed to function on future Android versions or upgrades.

Please note: This app does not work with FM Radio apps (Internet radio apps do work).

So tl;dr can break anytime for example if Android doesn't like it or they change how they do volume control settings for whatever reason and not working apparently with fm radio apps but okay for internet radio apps which can be a deal breaker for some of us. Also may or may not fix your caller speaker volume for your specific phone or tablet but that's kind of always a given with multiple differing models and makes etc so best to just first give it a try.

Here is the link page for the unlocker

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=opotech.finevo…

Comes with an overlay so you don't always have to open the app inside which apparently activates via your normal physical volume controls but I am still personally working around with that.

      Hope this helps you out.

      All the best,

      AlienC.

  • my galaxy tab s 10.5" LTE can make and receive calls. do i think its a good idea for such a device? hell no.

in saying that i have seen 7 to 8 inch chinese tablets that works as a phone also. one just looks awkward to use. like having a small plate to your face.

    • My friend used to have a phablet. I used to ask him about the "ghetto blaster". :) He never did use it as a phone though.

  • From memory all samsung tablets (with 3g/lte) are able to make voice/video calls, my note 10.1 2014 is capable of it. Not all android tablets with sim card slots actually allow voice/video calls.

It's a bit of a pain to use it as a phone though so you'd probably have to either get bluetooth headphones or a sony sbh 52 to handle calls.
