Warning: Target No Longer Accept Returns on Video Games

I tried to return a game today and they were complete bastards about it. It was for a unused present and still brand new, bought a few days earlier, had receipt and red security label intact. I was told NO RETURN NO REFUND NO EXCHANGE unless faulty.

Apparently a new policy. Was told at games, return counter and even manager. I told them there are no disclaimers at the entertainment counter or receipt about the policy. They would not budge even though i wanted to exchange for another, more expensive game.

I will contact Head Office next to find out their official policy. If it is I will not shop there anymore.

So beware and check before you buy any games from them and save yourself a headache.

    That doesn't match what's on Target's own website (https://www.target.com.au/help/refund-policy):

    When you change your mind
At Target you have 28 days to return your items (some exclusion apply) for a full refund or exchange as long as it is returned in a saleable condition with original proof of purchase. The refund will be provided using your original payment method.

Even if it is a new policy, it should not apply to old purchases especially if it hasn't been displayed anywhere. Hope you get to the bottom of this.

If you read the link it says.

"Computer games, CDs and DVDs must have the original security seal or and shrink wrap is intact."

They are not listed under the exclusions.

I would take an electronic device and download the page and go through it with the manager and ask, exactly, where it says you can't return the Video Games, given the above line.

      Best of Luck.

Yeah, sounds like a specific manager problem to me. I would try a different store and cite the website.

Do this, OP, and report back, pls.

  • What a pain, OP. It's funny, Target always seemed to be very open to returns, normally it was other shops where you had the manager that acted like refunds came out of their own pocket.

    Which Target? Name and shame.

If a manager is screwing over customers because they don't know their own policies, they're hurting their own employer and they should get reprimanded for it.

  • I won't ever buy hardware from Target now after all the troubles I had trying to get my 3ds repaired. Had a horrific experience at Southland and will never go back there again.

    • old lady at big w southland in the games section gets my business lol

    Perhaps this will help

    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

'No refund' signs and expired warranties
It is against the law for businesses to tell you or show signs stating that they do not give refunds under any circumstances, including for gifts and during sales.

tell you or show signs stating that they do not give refunds under any circumstances

      .

I was told NO RETURN NO REFUND NO EXCHANGE unless faulty.

No violation that I can see. OP was told no return unless faulty, not "under any circumstance" ie. Even if it is faulty.

Stores can legally reject exchanges and returns for change of mind. If they have a generous return policy, like Target, best to check t&c, including whether the refund is at their discretion.

  • Yeah I just bought a game. The guy clarified. As long as the red security label is undisturbed, you can return them.

I ended up going back to the store and mentioned I would follow it up with head office if they couldn't help me. In the end I was given a refund for the game. I got the feeling they did it just to get rid of me me and save themselves any trouble, so i didn't get another game. I have called Head Office and let them know of my experience so they can pass on a memo.

You guys are right, you can return up to 28 days as long as the security sticker is intact and still in new condition. I will test that store again soon and if they continue with that behaviour will name them on facebook :) Sometimes even manager discretion can be a pain in the ass if they don't even bother to learn their own policies or use common sense.

Good idea to carry a copy of the returns policy like mentioned above!

    Thanks

It always boggles my mind when people on minimum wage working for huge national company gets too emotionally invested in their work and breaks their own company protocol. It's fascinating to watch.

  • target have recently made changes to their refund policy which use to include credit notes to scan price after 28 days from purchase.
