Eat. Shop. Get out of the city.

It isn't as cheap as Vietnam, or maybe even Thailand, but it is ok budget wise.
    I really liked Penang.
    The food everywhere is outstanding.
If you like fancy shopping malls, you will find much to love.
But a locals village market is a good place to shop too, if you are after bargains.

  • you'll get a lot of offers for massages in bukit bintang

  • Ok I'm 24 taking my mum 2 brothers and sister which are all younger brothers are 16 and 10 sister is 14

It also depends on what you like doing. If you love sitting by a pool doing nothing, exploring the jungle, shopping, amusement parks, eating, clubbing (+/- baby seals) then different parts may appeal.
Give us a rough idea of the holiday you are after and we can suggest appropriate places :)

Have you been to any other Asian countries? Malaysia is quite humid, not the place I would go for an entire month.

Try and get out of KL. Penang, Cameron Highlands, Malacca, etc. I quite like Pankor island. Sunway theme park is OK too and is fairly well contained.

    Food is generally amazing.

Some things are cheap (hawker food for example), other things are not (international products more often than not).

edit: Better not say too much about 1mdb.. Could land you in trouble ;)

  • Petaling St, KL is fake knockoff everything. Quite fun.

I believe in the 1580's Ralph Fitch, an English merchant, visited Malaysia.

  • You may find some helpful ideas from this previous thread. Hope it helps.

    Durian!

    • places to visit
KL - more for contemporary shopping store, food and GEnting Highlands themepark/casino(about 1 to 2 hours drive away best recommended a cab or bus up there to stay a night or 2)
      Melaka - Historical dutch/portugese colony,food ….
Penang - climbing heaps of stairs to visit a temple/caves and monkeys…food
snorkeling - tioman, redang or pankor islands
Johor - Legoland and also super close to Singapore if your planning to go there too.
Perhentian - Scuba but its on the other continent on the east.

Food and places to go….google on youtube there are heaps of videos, if you want to see the expression on how good is the food google mark weir on youtube…..his food expressions is priceless lol.

Have fun, get an avian spray, hat, sunglasses, sun screen and you are set to go.

Caution: Malaysian food can be very spicy ….just look at how orange it is you will know how much spices are in them

To explain how big is Malaysia with its modern highway its …..Imagine KL in the middle and 5-6 hours drive north you can get to THailand and from KL 5-6 hours drive south you can get to Singapore. Do beware that Malaysian drivers are one of the very impatient, maniac drivers on the planet, one of the highest road kill nation in the world. Its …..king for the drivers not pedestrian so do becareful especially when you have children.
Try all the food there as its much cheaper compared to here and with the 1/3 of exchange rate discount…..nothing will go wrong.

    • Is 140-160km/h standard for the drive from KL airport or just my taxi driver?

      • +4

        Just a slow driver

      • 160kmh ….ok thats one honest cabbie driver or he needs to use the loo quite urgently :) usually the ones are trying to drive slowly or taking a long routes are the ones are dishonest….u can tell by looking at how many cars passes the cabby.

There are 2 Malaysia's east and west. My wife is from east. She never wanted to go back since she left 34 years ago.

I flew to Europe with mas airline a few times with stopover in KL. Stayed in the best hotel I ever was called http://www.hotelbangi-putrajaya.com/en-us/home/

Was paid by Air Malaysia. Else I was rather disappointed with KL. Rotten footpaths run down stores outside malls, luxury malls dearer than Australia.

Interesting: Malaysian government encouraged me to settle in West Malaysia but discouraged me from the East. Heavy strange custom regulations like only one mobile phone but no enforcement.

The place is governed by lazy Muslims, there are the Chinese who control the economy but are constraint by Muslim rules and all want to come to Australia. There are of course the Indians who usually try to run business as single operators or Indian groups.

While Sydney had a monorail they had a slower copy, pretty useless. Could not buy a ticket to the Petronas towers as them Muslim staff was already worn out at 8am 30 mins into their working day.
On my first trip the plane constantly came up with an arrow do show the direction of Mecca. Also advertised was the prayer rooms of course strictly for Muslims and segregated.

2nd time we took the cheapest public bus from Singapore across the bridge. Long waiting time on border. Johor Baru was dirty, took a bus to Malacca, nice, a bit of history and generally pretty but usual Asian tourist rip-off.

The bus into KL was stuck in traffic so we were allowed to disembark after an hour stuck about 1km from the overcrowded depot.

Nothing in KL to really excite me. The bus to the airport had to stop 7 times to pay a road toll as apparently a relative of the king had scored the contract to collect road tolls. Some toll stations had no exit in between it looked like a total senseless exercise.

If you like nice Malaysian food you can get some authentic clean dishes on our own Darwin markets. I got food poisoning in KL.

Penang supposed to be nice but I missed it. At least no visa fee something that is a pain for Vietnam. Suggest you look at surrounding countries.

I disagree with bad driving comments above. If you like daring drivers go to Russia or China.

    • Bus into KL, that was like what, over 20 years ago. They still exist but anybody who can afford it takes the express train or a taxi.

    • +1

      My oh my.

I suggest you stay home in a darkened room, and never venture out.

What a sad review of Malaysia. But that must have been a different Malaysia to the one I, and no doubt many other Ozbargainers have visited.

I'll agree with some things, eg, the broken footpaths in places, cheating taxi drivers (I never use taxis in KL now), and the traffic jams. By the way, there is nothing wrong with KL's monorail. It is designed to move people around the city and avoid further congestion. Meets the brief as far as I am concerned. My only complaint is that it used to get very crowded at times. Now they are putting in brand new 4-car train sets, which the platforms were originally designed for.

I guess you are not planning to go there any time soon after reading your comments, but, just in case, I would suggest you don't. Central KL is one massive construction site at the moment as they race to the finish line on the new MRT.

Otherwise, after about 10 trips there, I never tire of the place. KL has improved over the years I have been travelling there. It will never be perfect like Singapore - my favourite city - but they are cleaning it up gradually.

I love the KLIA Express train from the airport. Beats buses and taxis hands down. I always stay in Bukit Bintang, so the trip to Sentral, a short walk through Nu Sentral Mall, and then on to the monorail, is a simple trip for me, and no stress. Mind you, I only do hand carry luggage.

Penang and Melacca are great. Looking forward to going back to both in the next year or so. Not yet done the northern coast area, Cameron Highlands etc, but I will.

Malaysia is not a perfect place. I have no time for Barisan Nasional, Najib, and the current government, specially after the Anwar Ibrahim affair, but it is what it is. That is for Malaysians to change, not us. As for Bumi Putra (what you offensively describe as "lazy Muslims", well again, it is what it is. I think they have made some progress with integrating Chinese and Indians into Malaysian society, but that is just my view.

To be fair, if you wanted a vacation away from Muslim prayer rooms, in a place with exquisite footpath paving, and untroubled by traffic congestion, then KL would be a poor choice.

I like Malaysia, but I'm not that fussed by others practicing their religion peacefully or even unattractive or damaged paving.

  • Use Uber- but be very careful and quick (try to get pickup and dropoffs away from Taxi areas as the drivers can get very aggressive) very cheap transport option.

dont be afraid to try different foods and just eat eat eat! I miss malaysian food so badly but can only go back once every 2 years or so.

try going to a night market, SS2 is quite popular, i think it is either Monday or Thursdays. If your family is also a fan of durians, theres a durian buffet in that SS2 area as well ( If you are travelling to KL area)

  • lego land is in a area call jahor. much closer to Singapore…

langkawi…very nice resort… if you have the money stay in dat thai.

    and if you like buffets.

one called jagoya in KL. youtube it.

  • Can you change your destination?

    • Of course I was just thinking here because it was cheap and Iv never been haha what would u suggest?

      • Let me preface it by saying that I am widely travelled and that I love foreign people. Except that I have only spent a couple of weeks in Europe. A lot of time in Asia and America.
A certain element of Malaysian population I find not warm and friendly. Another element of their population I find quite nice, but they are trying to get out of Malaysia too.
My experience may not be as broad as some people's, but I would recommend Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Particularly I like Thailand. Quite easy to avoid being scammed except maybe for getting stuck with a fixed price taxi rather than a meter, Pattaya or Phuket (2 towns that I do not really like) Say paying $5 more than you should! They love children there, and would never do anything to hurt them. Their culture is very warm hearted. Most parts of Bangkok, such as Sukhumvit are very well set up for tourists. Lots of pubs for foreigners. Lots of restaurants. All aircond. :))
There are a couple of pockets of sexy bars, but that is not the true culture of Thailand. (Much as Kings X is not a true reflection of Australia)
And lots to do for tourists.

  • assassinating North Koreans was all the rage last month.
