Recommend a Car for 150 Km Daily Drive (Return 300 Km Approx) ? under 15k

Is anyone here do long drive on a daily basis from Melbourne to east/west regional suburbs ? If yes pls advise best possible car ( maintenance, fuel wise)

Car size does not really matter. I will be doing this run for at least over 6 months to the minimum.
In long run will look for other means of transport ( public transport / car pool) but at this stage, will be driving back and forth for a while.

I am 5'10 and weighs around 85kg.

It will be straight drive from one point to another.

Example : Dandenong to Ballarat

Some days will be early drive, around 2-3am so wont be able to take PT on those days hence drive.

are you driving all the way into the CBD or stopping outside and taking PT? or are you talking driving while at work?

i'm guessing you want comfy and fuel efficient?

how many k's on f'ways and how many on stop start roads?

    auto / manual?

    how tall are you?

    • PT will be on some days, for early 2am starts will be driving.

AUTO is the preference. I will be driving from A to B ( rest break on need basis)

    ex taxi lpg commo

Agreed, thats 40k KMs in 6 months which means the car depreciation would be huge. Pick up an ex taxi with LGP for $2-3k, get good bang for buck and hope for the best. At the end of it buy a more practical car.

Only bother with LPG if its a direct injection or Factory Kit
Aftermarket systems can be absolute crap and I have seen no end of airboxes and pistons blown through sides of ford motors due to cheap gas conversion kits

Most Taxis should be fine but just remember to shop around and check the vehicle out fully

A dirty diesel will be what you need in auto
    Good eco and low maintenance

    • Until you're up for particle filters and whatever other nonsense a diesel needs
Maintainence when due is FAR more expensive but overall cost of diesel and time between servicing should even that out

    https://carsales.mobi/cars/details/Mitsubishi-Mirage-2016/OA…

Under 12km for a car with 5 year warranty, fixed price servicing ( $230 a year or 15k interval) and the under 5 litres per 100km.

Also i think you get a few free years roadside assist with it.

Holy crap 40k every six months. Do oil change yourself every 15k for 80 bucks (oil and filter price)

    • Add $10 and buy a pack of the ear plugs from Bunnings to make 300km daily ride more tolerable:)

Yes the ear plugs would help a normal person but all i would hear was savings.

get a 1ltr diahatsu charade (or equivalent) .

I had one when I had to travel camberwell to Frankston everyday for work. absolutely awesome on petrol. small and manueverable. relatively comfortable (I'm 6ft, 90kgs). could sit on 130km/h no problem.

and cheap to buy. and cheap to service. and reliable as hell.

    • Brag about doing 130km/hour in Victoria, the nanny state with the most cameras :), not a smart idea

      Seems a little silly don't you think…

Also FYI doing 130km would be revving the poor tits out of that Charade in top peg no doubt
can't be much of a fuel saving at 5000-6000rpm from a 1 Litre motor

      • this was 15 years ago….

more pointing out that whilst many people think "1ltr motor!!, what a gutless POS!!", when in fact a car like a charade (and its successors) handle highway speeds with no problem.

in 5th gear @ 100km/h the engine was sitting on ~2000rpm. At 130 it was on ~3500/4000rpm.

        • Yeah I can relate
          I owned a 3 cylinder Charade myself
Was an awesome car, still was hairy at anything over 100km :)
the fact you could trash it and get alright fuel economy was a big win for a p plater

How I forget those days, used to dim the interior with my 1ohm stable AMP
it used to draw crazy amps off the poor little charade alternator

Make sure the cruise control works ;)

If the drive comfort is priority, get an older SUV. I have driven few thousand kms in 2 days with a 2006 RAV4 and was not overly tired after the trip :)

    Suzuki Swift
Best Car I ever had for Brisbane peak hour
    7L/100 in peak hour
tank lasted at least 2 weeks
Cheap to Service and Running costs are great

vw Mk5 gti DSG, 100,000 kms or less for 12k.
Or 125kW tdi dsg passat similar or less money and kms.

15k will get you a brand new Kia Rio with 7 yr warranty. If you can drive manual then get manual. Its a much better transmission than their auto. In saying that either way you wont go wrong.

Car size does matter if you are covering 300km a day. Cars are proportionally safer with their size, if they have the same safety rating. Remember safety ratings are not absolute, they are in size classes. I would get the biggest 5 star car you can afford, probably a late model Camry for your money. The risk of having an accident increases with mileage also.

  • Thanks Everyone for your time and valuable feedback so far, some of them are really eye opening which I didn't consider.

Buy an ex taxi. runs on LPG. you dont have to care about the car.
