I remember a few years ago Qantas was trialing to allow more than one check-in luggage, so long as the total weight does not exceed 23kg, or whatever allowance you get with your fare.
However, last year when we travelled we were caught by this. Overseas flight into Perth, I had 2 items, thinking of the new policy. However was told only allowed one and paid thru my nose. I had Silver status then.
I think flights to USA is an exception somehow but dont understand why.
So my question is, why are Australian airlines not allowing more than one item? Afterall, it's not reasonable to a frail old lady like me to carry ONE item weight 23kg? Isnt it much more safer to carry two of 11.5kg each to reduce strain on your back, for health and safety purpose?
In this article qantas explains it is due to the their then new baggage drop system

And I would also think slinging 1x 23kg bag on your back would be better than awkwardly hanging 1x 11.5 kg bag over each shoulder.
Maybe invest in a bag with wheels if you cant carry a bag.
