50% off NSW Driver's Licence Renewal for Safe Drivers

1312

If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for a 50% discount on your licence renewal fee. You must renew your licence within six months of the expiry date. If you renew more than six months after expiry, you must pay the full renewal fee. If you’re eligible, the discount applies whether you renew your unrestricted licence for one, three, five (or 10 years for eligible customers aged 21 to 44 years).

To qualify, at the time of renewal you must:

-Hold an unrestricted NSW licence of any class which expires on or after 1 July 2012. Interstate and overseas licences are not counted. Learner and provisional P1 and P2 licences are also not counted
-Have held the NSW licence continuously for five years. This means you must have less than six months total break (eg if your licence was expired, suspended, cancelled or refused for any reason, except on medical grounds)
-Have no relevant offences recorded on your NSW licence in the five years leading up to the date you renew your licence. Interstate and overseas driving records are not counted. Relevant offences include:
—Any offence which attracts demerit points
—A conviction for a major offence, such as drink or drug driving
—Any unlicensed driving offence.

Some offences are recorded on your traffic record, but won't be counted when determining eligibility for the discount. These include offences dealt with by way of a caution issued by the State Debt Recovery Office, or any offence which was dismissed without conviction under Section 10 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999.

Important: Offences dealt with under Section 10 before 31 January 2011 are counted as relevant offences, because they attracted demerit points at the time.

If you’re appealing an offence when you renew your licence, the discount does not apply. However if your appeal is successful, you may be eligible for a refund of 50% of the renewal fee you paid.

  • Hurry before it gets ozbaragined!
    You snooze you loose.

    • This is one deal that can't be ozbargained. You can only get it if you haven't lost a point on your license in the last 5 years.

  • Got the same discount almost 5 years ago when I renew, going for the 10 year this time. Thanks for the reminder.

  • so essentially you have to have your fulls for 5 years before youre eligible right?

eligible customers aged 21 to 44 years).

    Seriously . Age discrimination.

    • +1

That's only for the 10 year license. I assume because your eye sight can change dramatically in 10 years (especially for those over 44).

    • +1

If you're 45 years and older you'd still qualify for a 50% discount on 5 years licence renewal.

The 21 to 44 years part is an eligibility requirement for the new 10 year NSW licence.

Don't worry the price savings between a 5 year licence and 10 year licence is tiny. According to the current licence fees, 2x 5 year licence renewal with 50% discount would only cost an additional $13 more than the 10 year licence. Spread over 10 years that works out as $1.30 per year.

Haha because having a clean driving record means you're "safe" driver. Yeh right, more like an overcautious right lane hog on the freeway who does 20 under the limit.

  • why Vic do not have this?

    • +1

Because that would mean less money going to the state government.

      • while they do nothing to improve road but make the traffic slower?

    • They used to.. I remember back in about 2007, I got a 10 yr licence for about $120 with a safe driver discount.. I've yet to ever have a fine and no discount this time around in 2017.. so $260! :(

This isn't a deal by Ozbargain standards, don't know why the mods haven't moved it to forums?

  • Sounds good

    Thanks OP, bought five!

  • From the positive votes, many people think this is a good deal. For those who fail to understand, this is a deal

    • It's a government incentive for safe drivers that has been around for more than 10 years. At a minimum it should be listed as targeted as it's not available to all.

      • Available to all NSW drivers only some with starting date years later than the others.

One tip: you can renew up to 6 month earlier. This may reduce the risk of not getting the discount (for whatever reasons).

    • And you can get a 10 year license (if in the right age range). Lock in the discount for 10 years.

You only need a 5 year clean record, so you can have 5.5 years of bad behaviour & still get the discount next time.

Thanks! I was hesitant to go drag racing with the gang next Friday night but the savings will cover some of the fine if I get caught (joke).

By the way, I assume the renewal is an extension so I don't lose 6 months? It seems obvious but this is the government and I couldn't find anything explicit.

      • No, you won't lose as it is an extension.

seems odd. because going 10 km/h over the speed limit on motorways doesn't endanger anyone most of the time (look at germany's autobahn). So the only conclusion you can make is that it's a cash grab by the government to hand out so many speeding fines.

Me and wife both were eligible for this last year so we both renewed for 10 years and saved a bundle. I actually learned about it from oz bargain from a forum post few years ago.

  • why doesnt VIC has it

  • my wife had this 2-3 yrs ago
went to RTA to renew. She did not know about 50%
until the attendant asked her if she hold the license more than 5 yrs and no demerit points.
my wife told her, yes for more than 5 yrs and have no demerit points
and the attendant entered something into the computer
and said to my wife, yes your are eligible!

My impression was that at that time you have to ask for it or being offered by the attendant
It was NOT automatic! As the attendant need to entered something into the system.

What about shit drivers? shouldnt there be a price hike?

    • I'm assuming they cop it on their CTP and Car Insurances.

      • No not talking about the ones that claim accidents, the ones that cause them: e.g Slow drivers, inexperienced & overall shitty driving

        • It's always someone else's fault isn't it.

        • @aurotaro: yeah, usually a certain type of people

        • @frostman: easy cop out

This is becoming a cancer. Maybe someone can also post "deal" like '2000 flybuys points for $10 dollars to use in Coles' etc.

    • +2

Get inline, I am waiting for the post about the Tax Free Threshold "DEAL".

  • -4

Title is factually inaccurate. Should be "50% off NSW Driver's Licence Renewal for Fine-Evasive Drivers", or similar.

Quite a few reckless drivers are never caught because they know how to play the camera and police-dodging game.

    • Whilst I find your comment a bit funny/odd, I'm frankly quite surprised it is on -4 at the time of posting.. It's not that bad a comment is it guys?

  • I am don't think I am a safe driver, but the cops have never been able to catch me, can I cash in this deal ?

  • I wonder what is meant by NSW Licence in this condition:
"Have held the NSW licence continuously for five years"

Wonder if that counts time held a licence under Provisional Licences.

    • I read it as having held an unrestricted licence for 5 years
but it is not specifically clear on that point..

To qualify, at the time of renewal you must:

Hold an unrestricted NSW licence of any class which expires on or after 1 July 2012. Interstate and overseas licences are not counted. Learner and provisional P1 and P2 licences are also not counted

  • Didn't know about the discount but thanks for the heads up.

  • Something for vic roads to think about and follow suit.
Any incentive for drivers to drive safe is a good one I think.
