Vet price-matched on dog medication

Couldn't find a Pets/Animals section, so I posted this under Health.

I needed some more ongoing expensive medication for an old dog and found it online for a much cheaper price. I couldn't get it as I didn't have a prescription, so I went to the vet and asked for a prescription. He obviously knew exactly what was going on and asked if I was buying it online, so I showed him and he price-matched it, resulting in a significant saving on the usual price.

I never thought to do that with a medical/vet thing before.

Try it out!

Nice. Good to be informed. He probably still made a profit anyway.

    • I wish I made as much as people think we make

      • Would you price match at a loss?

        • Not my call, but I probably wouldn't. Vet meds are expensive because they aren't covered by PBS. But I don't hesitate to suggest 'off label' or substitution with human stuff where possible.

        • @Strand0410: I see. I honestly have no idea about the industry, just thought what OP did was a good trick. Thanks for the reply.

    • Rubbish. Vets have massive costs and don't make that much…

  • Fantastic. We get a prescription filled out for a 12 month supply (at our dogs annual checkup) and order online.

Could you please let us know were you order on-line?

As an aside, a few years ago I was able to get medication (generic lomotil) for my dog from the local chemist for $8 using a script from my vet (which saved me $72 a pop) In humans, lomotil does one thing (stops diarrhea)but in dogs it's used to treat other ailments. My dog was on it for 18 months so it was quite a saving.
