Toll lost parcel/Seller lied about item location

Hi guys, So a few weeks ago I bought a xiaomi mi box on ebay from a seller who had put the item location as Melbourne Australia. I chose to pay more for this as I thought the item would come faster and there wouldn’t be any hassles.
Anyway fast forward a bit and I see the item is then shipped from HK so they have then lied about where it is from. After that the item is then lost by Toll after they put an investigator etc they declared it as lost.
Now I’m not sure where I stand with this if I want to dispute it. One could say it is my fault I didn’t purchase insurance for it etc. But I also bought this thinking it would be a simple delivery from Melbourne so the fact it got lost coming from HK wasn’t a factor I foresaw when I purchased the product.
I’ve started a paypal dispute and am not sure now what will occur. Has anyone run into a similar issue?

Its the seller's responsibility to ensure the package arrives at your doorstep. Not yours. You shouldn't have to pay for insurance - that is the seller's business. Just lodge a Paypal dispute. I've done it before when stuff hasn't arrived.

    • That's what I figure. The seller can than choose to include this in the postage quote/price, but if the seller chooses not to include it, than the onus is on them.

Add to the fact that AusPost (at least) will only speak to the seller about lost packages. The seller is their customer, after all.

You should report the seller to ebay as well as they do have a policy against what you described.

I wouldn't be happy if I bought an item listed in being in Australia (and expecting it to come within 2-3 days) if it actually came from overseas and took a week or more.

Very common trick.. they call it drop shipping.. I call it lying on the ebay ad :-(

      • Yeah I've been caught with that a few times now.

        • I often see items listed as being in Dawin NT, but if you click into the seller's profile they are based in China or Hong Kong. It's not against against eBay policy to be an overseas seller and if the item is physically located in Aus, but most sellers abuse that and drop ship - leave bad feedback and report

The items will also be relabeled or repackaged by a freight forwarder so it looks like it came locally, eg I've received packages that are labelled that they're shipped from Startrack in Sydney even though they took 3 weeks to arive.

    • eBay does bugger all about these dodgy sellers. I had an issue with a China based seller who sold me a dud dash cam, then tried to jerk me around when I wanted to return it. Item location said it was in Australia but it was actually in Shenzhen. eBay basically told me to send it back to Shenzhen and they'd do something about it. A few days later the seller re-listed the item and everything was still like before. Useless.

  • It has happened to me a few times. I hate it.

It's so dishonest and it takes ages for some items to arrive. One way to spot these listings I've found is often Darwin, NT is listed as the item location. Each time a seller has lied on the ad and shipped internationally where they've listed Australia and a delivery timeframe I've complained.

Typically I send them an email them asking for a tracking number the day before it's due (they rarely supply tracking), then on the day after it was due under the maximum delivery window I lodge a dispute, saying the item was needed by the due date and is no longer necessary. I offer for them to arrange to have the item picked up.

If I was you, I'd just work through the dispute via paypal. Simply say the item is late and no longer needed, DO NOT GIVE THEM EXTRA TIME! It will simply draw it out past the resolution window.
