Wouldn't bother because, and only because, of the Vietnam visa requirements and cost for Australians (assuming you want to leave the airport for the probable long transit in VN). Although UK citizens don't need one, atm.
Sydney > Ho Chi Minh City > London (with 2.5 & 4.5 hours on the ground)… similar in reverse with 9 hours in HCM

I don't understand how VN airlines work: the price is OK if you are in transit in VN (Ho Chi Minh city or Ha Noi). But if you want to stay a few days in these cities then the price just goes up. I would have thought that they should encourage tourists to stay and spend in their country by at least keeping the price the same.

It's an ideological thing, and the difficulty and therefore time it will take to have a more open doors policy.Just consider their visa hurdles.
When in Vietnam, remember you are in one of the longest and last of the communist regimes. No, it's not politically like other Asian countries.
No discount to buy FC gift card @ Woolies because they charge additional 5% issue fee on those. Unless there was a promotion.
