Indian Pacific Wheel Race

For those cycling fanatics and less obsessed or just curious, I've been fixated on this since the start yesterday, cool site where you can track the riders, leaders have completed 600km in the first day which to me is an amazing achievement..

The #IPWR is a 5,500km (3,400mi) unsupported cycling race.

Starting in Fremantle, on the westcoast of Australia, it crosses the sparse Nullarbor plains, through to lush surrounds and urban scapes of Adelaide, on to Melbourne via the iconic Great Ocean rd and then on through the Australian Alps to finish at Sydney Opera House.

No teams, no support, no drafting.

  • I only found out about this yesterday. I love it, such a great old school adventure with no support crews ect

  • Damn! Never heard of this. Good stuff!

  • Durianrider already retired. It's a shame because I was looking forward to him getting spanked.

    • I guess to some degree you need to capitalise on your achievements, but a race like this is the ultimate leveller… I've read many comments about riders not 100% prior to going into this, but you know certain riders will finish or be taken away in an ambulance kicking and screaming!

    • He's out already? I am Strava buddies with him, he is a pretty polarising character with his Vegan crusade. Seems like a very intense kind of guy in his youtube vidz as well.

  • Damn, my hats off to the riders. I did the 60KM Around the Bay last year and that completely took it out of me. I thought those who did the full 250KM were bad-ass; but this is another whole level.

    • Yep and they are also loaded up with the weight/resistance of bags of supplies, water, gyro powered hubs. They cannot depend on others to help them, so you need to take enough to last between towns/roadhouses

    • I saw a guy have a heart attack in front of me 2 Around the Bay's ago. We were doing 180 kms as part of the Mercedes Benz Challenge (within Around the Bay) and one of my regular riding buddies brought along a friend that hadn't ridden for a few years. The new guy didnt seem fit enough but who was i to judge. We made the turnaround point and breakfast then on the way back he made it maybe another 5kms and just dropped off his bike onto the road. They called an ambulance and got him to Hospital, he hung on for another week or so in a coma then died.

Whenever I am tempted to skip out of training rides I always think of that guy who was totally under-prepared and not fit enough!

Well, a rather sad update to this thread. Mike Hall, who was in second place at the time, was struck and killed this morning by a car about 50 km south of Canberra. Don't know what to say really, thoughts are with his friends and family.

    • Yep devestating, having followed him for years and with the rivalry at the front… Kinda feel ashamed that this legend comes to our country, helping to promote a great Australian event and is killed RIP
