Xiaomi MIUI 8.2 Update Hassle

Last night I updated. After the update it wanted my password to restart. Hmm- is that usual? I put in my phone PIN, then it says the PIN is ok but I need to reset to factory settings to restart. Major hassle- lost all my settings, apps and the contacts I was silly enough to save to phone, not Gmail. I'm nowhere near smart enough with smartphones to think of any work-around so I reset.

Did that happen to anyone else with a Xiaomi phone? Will it happen again?

    You didn't back up everything to a micro sd card - step 1 of any update?

      I didn't want a Mi account but if this is going to happen I might have to.
