Solution to my 55" Seiki TV USB Problem

Hi all,

I purchased a 55" Seiki TV from Dick Smith during their closing down sales for approx $400.

I've noticed that something isn't right with the USB - 95% of the time, I plug in a USB, it says File Format Error. Videos I was once able to watch in the past, now no longer work.

USB Is an important feature of the TV that I need - I'm not sure how to fix it, so I'm looking for a solution.

The solution I'm thinking of, is an Android Media Hub or something? I don't have much knowledge on these media hubs. I have a Chromecast plugged in to the TV to make it smart, but I need USB connectivity for movies etc.

What's my cheapest/best alternative? I'd love to plug in some sort of media hub for like $20 or $30 but maybe i'm being too ambitious.

Also, I have no lowliner/entertainment unit/desk on the bottom So I have nowhere to put the media hub. So hopefully the solution is something small and lightweight (maybe something I can double sided tape to the back of the TV).

Many thanks!

Format the USB in the right file format . You need to do this on your computer and choose FAT32 or NTFS etc. I'm not sure what your TV would want but FAT32 is probably ok.

    • tried many diffferent usb's. No avail. somethign in the TV SOFTWARE

Might well be the USB memory getting corrupted. Cheap Toshiba $1 are absolute shockers. Sandisk are reliable but many are too slow.

    • nope - ran tests….no usb worked

  • Get a used WDTV. It'll solve the issue and probably play the content better/nicer than the tv

if it's only a problem when connecting, you could get a usb splicer with 4 usb's connected so the cable doesn't move, but you can connect things to it

    • tried connecting usb extension etc, didnt work :(

How big is the USB drive??? The tv may not support large capacities or the format.

Plex + chromecast is an option or one of those xiaomi tv boxes (or similar android box).

    • I'm not sure what Plex is, and I've hear dot hose xiaomi boxes thought not familiar - ill look into both.

USB Drive isnt an issue. Tried a small 2gb usb and a 2tb portable. none worked

plex is computer software that makes a database of tv shows, music, movies and makes a "server". There is some set up involved (filebot is a renaming program that is really helpful) but afterwards you can play stuff on the local network to the iDevice/android device and cast to the chromecast.

  • I'd plug the USB into router and cast from the USB over network using wifi and my phone . Found that chrome cast works for quite a few codecs

    • that sounds good - i've also got nbn too. so sounds do-able.

      but it's not.

My intenret is horrible. (wifi is so bad that I bnarely get 2mbps in my room). AND IM ON NBN. Been fighting telstra 6 months now. Scared to jump ship and lock into anotehr contract, fearing the same issue, if not worse.

      • It doesn't use internet. Just local wifi. I used nPlayer for iphone

        • will give this a shot
          Thanks
