Unintended charity...

Went to BP to fill up my car as I had activated the Amex deal on it. Little did I know that even for a transaction under $100, I would need to enter my pin. Of course, I don't remember the pin on my Amex card, as my primary card is a Visa. Anyway, when I was trying to pay and the pin didn't work, I told the cashier please serve the person behind me while I sort this out. In the mean time a crazy lady was honking at my car and I went out to move my car to the waiting bay.

When I went in, the cashier told me that the guy behind me had paid for me. I was quite taken aback as I had cash in my pocket and I could even have paid from my Visa card.

Luckily, the guy still hadn't left the petrol station and I paid him the amount he paid for me and thanked him

My question is that have you ever been in a situation where someone tried to be kind even if you didn't need any help? I was quite upset with the whole chain of events. Anyway, that's just me.

TL;dr - someone paid for me at the petrol station. I didn't need any help.

I have had occasional small things like that. I would repay if possible, if not, I take the approach that is evidence of lots of good in the world and make sure I do something myself to 'pay it forward'.

    Also are you hot?

If OP says yes, we need a pic to prove it.

    • I could change my profile pic but then the cloak of anonymity will be removed…

do you look more like mrs krabapple, flander's wife, lisa, marge, the bags at nursing home, or the stripper that jumps out of the cake one time?

I think this should motivate you to do more charity. Small things matter. You dont need to listen to some speech or visit some religious place for charity.

I was driving down the highway and approached a toll. The car in front was at the booth and taking a particularly long time so I was growing frustrated, I started cursing her under my breath. When I got to the booth the attendant told me that they had paid for me.

It was a humbling experience and I learnt a lesson that day.

It is not just payment for things it is "stepping up" in situations, e.g. helping people on/off trams with prams; standing up to bullies - especially if they are bullying others; mentally checking in on your colleagues to see if they are struggling and seeing if you can help; helping your neighbours and watching out for something "wrong" (house being broken into, haven't seen them for a while, domestic violence, etc); contacting the police rather than ignoring an issue; protesting rather than shrugging it off; etc. The other thing is to accept/decline assitance, and acknowledgement, with grace. You may not want/need the kindness but thank the person for offering. I'm quite capable of standing in a tram but I thank anyone who offers me a seat, as they are being nice. My view on "found" money in the street is return it if you can, but if not, donate it to charity. Start everyday with what can I contribute, rather than what can I get. This is the underlying philosophy of this site, people who find bargains are gifting this knowledge to others. (I know this sounds a bit "Pollyannerish" but it actually makes you feel better as well.)

  • How much was your total?

Did he try to walk away back to his car after he paid or stand around waiting for you to come back?

I'm wondering if there were any other intentions - like waiting for you to come talk to and thank him and perhaps get your number… haha

      Total was $71.

He was in his car, waiting to get into the car wash.
