What Are You Saving for?

As someone that is very tight with money the whole of my life, I find myself in a very weird situation where I am overseas consuming my saving.

Being an avid ozbargainer myself, I get this strange urge to save money and not buy things; however, seeing as I'm on holiday, I should probably loosen up my wallet, enjoy myself and forget the pricetag.

I pose this question to the community. What are you saving for?

Seeing that there will be no pension in the next 20 years, the time to invest and save is now.Furhtermore, there will be no more cash transactions in the future.
Yesterday it was released that ATM transactions have fallen so low, that they want todo away with them.
So those with cash at home and under the beds etc,u know what to do.
Other than that, saving as much as I can cos even if we can the measly pension,we wont even be able to pay our land rates with that.

+1 on saving for retirement. We are nearly there and it is just a matter of when to jump off the cliff. The future is so unsure it is almost impossible to know how much and for how long.

      • All this talk of retirement.. The option never once came across my mind. You can probably guess my demographic from that alone.

OP - You have spent a lot of money going on holidays so don't deny yourself the experiences once you are there. Go to the museums, castles, hiking paths, etc. The secret is to do the research and find out what is good value and what is a rip off or being robbed. There is a saying - "don't eat if you are on something moving, with a view, or near an attraction - as the prices will be higher". Look at local public transport. Go on tours when they make it easy to visit something that is generally hard; the vatican museum is a very large line when you go by yourself. Make sure you have travel insurance and that you indicate any preexisting conditions - particularly pregnancy. My favourite souveniers are interesting T-shirts - unbreakable, immediately practical, easy to carry and you can use them years after the "thing" on the mantel is still gathering dust. (Also you would be amazed how many times strangers compliment me on the t-shirt I'm wearing). Have fun and the rest of us are jealous.

    • I certainly try my best to not spent a stupid amount of money on holiday but its just so painful being here and slowly watching your bank reduce past milestones you worked so hard to get them to.

Theres just a part of me that wishes this was all free. Life would be so much better if it was

      • Tell me about it. I've taken a career break for this year to destress, go to gym and reset my energy levels. We can afford it but watching the bank balance go down with the credit card bills is disheartening.

theres a saying "youre not going to take the money with you when you die"

You can work out what that means

    • Make sure that your will says "Bury me with all my life's earning in gold" or "in Eneloop"?

  • Ticked off everything besides home and marriage. The two most expensive :(

  • retirement, only 37 years to go!

  • my retirement, but in the meantime, a better house, a nicer car, holidays and kids schooling.

  • Nothing… I just can't spend all my money (not because I earn a lot, but because there is just not much I want to buy). I should add that I also go on at least three overseas holidays a year too, but I mostly use CouchSurfing or AirBnB and cheap flights.

  • I want to pay off my mortgage as fast as possible, I'm only 12 months in so still have a long way to go. I need to start looking for a better deal.

My partner and I have been saving for the last 9 years.

    Many sacrifices were made :

    • No more big holidays.
    • Less eating out and only then with the Entertainment book.
    • I brought lunches to work.
    • I bought very little in terms of new clothes, allowed myself some cheap gadgets from Ozbargain.
    • I worked whenever possible, even public holidays.

    The goals :

    • Pay off the current house.
    • Have child or children if capable.
    • Buy a new car without needing finance.
    • Buy a bigger house in a good location without needing finance.

Just recently all goals have been achieved.

Now the next goals are to fix up house #1 to be in a rental condition after said children have been through it. And after almost 10 years go on a nice holiday, then onto house #3.

    • I think there is a fallacy in trying to save money and being on ozbargain. I feel like a spend an extra 1000 dollars a year just by visiting this site…

      • Yes…quite true. I have been so tempted to purchase items, most recently a Dyson V6 and there was a great DJI Phantom 3 deal.

It took every once of control not to purchase them.

  • no one saving for marriage
