Laptops - Anything Better Value than These?

Hey OzBargain,

I've been browsing several sites and been in a few stores over the last few days and I've finally shortlisted two laptops which I think offer the best value for money but was wondering if anyone knew of any better deals for under $950? (this is my maximum budget)

Laptop 1 $879
1366x768 display
i7 processor
1TB HDD

Laptop 2 $934 with 15% student discount

I'm leaning towards laptop 2 which offers FHD 1920x1080 display, an SSD, much better graphics and a backlit keyboard for only $55 more but has an i5 processor. What are your thoughts if you had to pick between the two?

I haven't been able to find any other laptops which offer the same type of specs under $950 but was hoping someone here may have and could help me out.

    1080p and SSD are a requisite for me, anything less and your just torturing yourself!

      I'd also add IPS panel, Core 5i/m processor, and 8GB RAM too.
      Not to discount a decent keyboard, trackpad, and battery capacity though.

      Sounds high-end, but this should really be mid-range by now.
      We've had these technologies since 2012… 5 years is a looong time technology wise.

    keep an eye on grays online ebay.. some incredible bargains, far better than both those laptops you listed. I just bought a X1 Carbon for less than $650!

      Like the OP I'm in the market as well. Lost an ASUS laptop last week when, we suspect, the battery exploded and started a fire :-(

      Had a look at Grays Online. Prices seem good, especially with the CYBER voucher.

      However, most of these seem to be older models. A Toshiba unit that appealed to me was a 2012 vintage.
