Gym in Central or Inner North West Sydney Which Enforces Towel Usage

Hello,

Re-started at the gym a few months ago, and about 80%-90% of gym users do not bring a towel or put their towel on the floor and then sweat all over the equipment. Gym rules and ample signage and PA announcements state you must use a towel, but staff and management are lazy and do not enforce the rule.
This is Crunch Fitness Sydney CBD.
No thanks.

Does anyone know of a gym in Sydney CBD or inner NW where the staff actively enforce correct usage of towels?
Price does not necessarily need to be a bargain, but reasonable sign up costs and month to month plans preferred, up to ~$1000 per year.

Thanks for your help.

  • Does central sydney mean in or around the CBD?

If so, try Camperdown Fitness gym. I have seen people use a towel, but I am not sure if it's compulsory. Most people there are professionals, so you're less likely to see young whippersnappers who have no regard for basic courtesy.

  • I would've thought people would have the decency to use a towel in the gym, if not just tell the people without them to stop disrespecting the equipment when you see them.

    • I picked a fight with the guy next to me a month ago, haven't seen him since. I know what you are saying, but with around 40-50 in the gym at a time and only 5-10 using a towel, well that's going to be a lot of fighting. And, it's not a healthy workout if going to the gym gets you really angry [not the kind of motivation I require].
      I agree it is disrespectful.

  • This is a never ending problem in Sydney gyms! I have been to many gyms and despite the policies, signs and announcements you will always find people who don't use towels! And, yes I agree with you in that the problem stems from the fact that the gym towel policy is not enforced by staff.

  • +1

You can never fully enforce it unless you watch every person on every machine.
And what does their dirty towel do for hygiene anyway. Wipe before and after equipment yourself to solve the issue :)

    • Which is what good gyms do, they do a safety check/walk regularly and tell people to use a towel or leave, also on entry anyone who doesn't have a a bag or towel is questioned. They don't need to watch people every second like you suggested.
Good gyms have a no towel no train policy.
This is my first gym in Sydney, last time was in Brisbane and that was a good gym.

  • I'm more concerned about deodorant usage. I can only assume this isn't an issue at your gym since you haven't mentioned it, so count yourself lucky.

    • A gym I visited in southwestern Sydney provided free deodorant for members and guests.

Another which didn't, was frequented by a pair of young men who reeked of curry and pungent body odour. They kept to themselves and everyone else kept well clear. I quickly learnt to hold my breath within 5 m of them or just give them a wide birth when crossing the gym.

I still wonder whether their lack of personal hygiene was a cultural difference or a crafty technique to secure their preferred gym equipment.

      • Deodorant hasn't been a problem, most of the patrons are young 20-30 and slather on the aftershave or train with make-up and perfume.

  • I think I will quit and buy some weights for home, and do some more running at the local park. The no towel culture is probably too ingrained for it to ever change at this gym.

    • How much were you paying in total for your membership?

And how much space do you have for a home gym?
