iPrimus Internet Practically Unusable

At my new house my housemates have signed us up with iPrimus because they have unlimited ADSL for $80 + bonus bill credit with no contract. However, it's awful. The router will randomly kick some devices off the network for a while, I have random slowdowns and currently I'm trying to watch a twitch stream while my housemate watches netflix and twitch just won't even load.

NBN isn't available in our area yet, nor is cable. What's a better deal than what we've got but will actually RELIABLY work?

The router will randomly kick some devices off the network for a while

So you're having router problems AND ISP problems? How can you distinguish which is which? Replace your shitty router first before going to the hassle of swapping ISPs.

    • but they gave me the router. I have to buy my own? What if I buy my own and it doesn't get any better?

      • If you want to hammer the router with many connections then you need to get a decent set up to avoid restarts. This is a very common problem with cheap ISP supplied gear.

Borrow one off a mate? Some people have spares around the house.

I upgraded mine a while back and kept my old one as a tester unit. A few years back exetel charged me $200 for a technician to say my modem was malfunctioning as i didnt have a spare to test it against.

  • Have a look that your router is a known compatible one with the infrastructure.

Back in the day i signed up with them and had to replace a router to make everything work reliably. Apparently there were 2 competing chipsets, one worked lovely, the other was so-so

    • how would I do that?

  • Check how far from the exchange you are. If you're further than 2km, you'll be getting pretty shit speeds.
Options are stick with your current ADSL or get mobile broadband.
Shit internet is better than no internet.

    • it's not so much the speed as it is the inconsistency and dropouts

Some things to try before hitting your isp…
    Isolation test.
    Borrow another router.
    Lan cables up to spec?
House phone line wiring and sockets all ok?
    Malware?

    • we have tried swapping the lan cable, tried using an old router but it didn't work, and from what I've read changing the router is unlikely to do much as its the ISP that sucks.

The house wiring should be ok because apparently on the old ISP/router (Optus) it worked fine.

Malware no since it happens across many devices.

        Anyone using windows 10?
This what I found when having similar speed issues.

1 laptop with Win10 was constantly trying to check for updates.

Googled around and found how to totally disable and everything was
back to normal speeds and no more dropouts.

        Cheers

surely checking for updates can't completely cripple the entire network? last night I had lower than dial up speeds

          @noodlesfordaddy:

in my case yes. son is a gamer and was constantly complaining, changed routers , removed everything except internet, and after a few days it was the wifes laptop when on was looking for updates, did a disable and all has been good for over a month.

W10 update default settings are a real pita!! Recently had a laptop go crazy downloading updates over a tethered mobile connection.. :-( Ran up $70 worth of data in 10 minutes. Lucky the telco was understanding and wrote it off. Must happen to many.
Odd how they make is such a task to disable it now :-(

    Whats your modem syncing at?
How far away are you from the exchange?
Are you connecting by wireless or cable? IF wireless trying using 5Gz channel its less crowded and less chance of interference that would cause lost packets

start by calling iprimus and say you have an intermittent fault.

What are your adsl signal levels?

    • Can you post your modem stats… Some people are brilliant at deciphering them.. especially the guys on whirlpool.
It is always worth checking everything your end before sticking it up the ISP as most of the time the fault is at the users end. ISP's dont purposely go out of their way to create problems on a customers connection even though it feels like that sometimes.
Olliethechum above can vouch for the benefit of a thorough test at the users end.. :-(

      • how do I post modem stats?

        • Each router will be different but you will need to log into it and look for DSL log, DSL sync, modem status or something like that. On this page it will list your Line attentuation, SNR, Sync rate etc if you can post the downstream data rate usually its in kbps eg 5670kbps you will then be able to determine if your ISP is at fault for the slow connection or the wifi. If its the wifi then your ISP is limited in what they can do to help
