Which of these two laptops is better?

I must say, I do have an allegiance to intel and nvidia after a string of bad luck with some AMD processors and a graphics card. The specs on the HP seem a bit tighter, the main con is a lack of SSD. 4GB graphics though seems pretty good for a laptop at $798.

  • Both very average graphics cards. I have a similar laptop to the acer one except it has a 7500u.

  • It's going to be tricky as each has its ups and downs…ie, the one with the fast cpu has no SSD. of which 128 is damn limiting once u install windows OS, s/w and games like GTA.

  • Out of those two, I would definitely go for the JB laptop with the intel/nvidia combo.

Don't expect too much relative to performance in my view as I believe that GTA5 won't be an enjoyable experience on it.

    Cheers

  • +1

The Acer Aspire will be better for gaming - the 940MX will beat the R7 any day (940MX will be more on par with the R9-270/370). The i7 and i5 realistically is not that much different in this scenario because both of them are the low-voltage dual core versions and not the proper quad cores (they are mainly clock speed differences here). Also, the SSD will be substantially quicker but limited storage.

The Storage is the easiest to upgrade yourself. So go the Acer and upgrade with a cheap SSD from OZB if you find that 128GB is not enough.

  • You're probably better off getting a dedicated gaming pc or console. I don't believe either of those laptops will play games well.

  • I don't think either laptop's are good for gaming.

Or suitable for gaming in terms of:
    - Web/Flash games (Thousands of them)
    - Emulators (Dreamcast, PSP, PS1, DS, N64, SNES, Sega, Atari)
    - Older Game titles (2010 and older)

I think you should however check out the laptops personally.
How's their keyboard? Their trackpad? Their screens?

Also see if the hard drives are user accessible.
You might be able to take out the M.2 or 2.5in SATA drives, and replace them with 1TB SSD's
(Samsung EVO 850 and Crucial MX300 are cheap good options).

  • I think they are both overpriced for what they offer, and come with a horrible screen. I could never use 1366x768 anymore. If you want cheap then I think just wait for one of the Lenovo that get posted here all the time, about $800-$1000 but much better bang for buck and they have FHD screen. Cheap laptops also have a poor trackpad IMO. After using a glass precision trackpad on the XPS line it would be hard to go back.
