Victorinox Vs Leatherman

Hi All

What do you guys think I should go for in terms of multi tools? If budget was not a problem, what would you go for?

Victorinox is swiss made and provides 25 year warranty and is available in Bunnings, while Leatherman is US made and provides lifetime warranty and is available at BCF, and is more expensive.

Also, what do you guys think of the home brand multi tools from Super Cheap Auto or Bunnings? They look okay and are very cheap but do they last?

I need one to carry with me for emergencies and also need one for a gift.

Let me know your thoughts. I dont have any specific purpose to use it for, just something to carry in my bag - never know when you need what!

Thanks.

Leatherman wave is awesome ! You can get one from knives online .com.au and use the promo code THANKYOU17. I got the wave for 113$ after the 10% discount code.

  • I got a Victoronix 15 years ago and it is still going strong. The blades are as sharp as ever (I do not use it often - maybe a couple of times a year). Don't have a Leatherman, so can't comment on that.

    • Victoronix - Is that a chinese counterfeit version?

      • haha - spelling mistake on my part. It is an original Victorinox bought from one of their shops in Switzerland. Also, had it engraved with my name. :)

  • Victorinox because they still have replacement parts for your ww2 knife https://youtu.be/sPvDNXnRJQM

  • Leatherman is US made and provides lifetime warranty

Looks like it's also 25 years.

  • After watching the documentary on how they make the Swiss Army knives, and after getting a Swiss Army from Switzerland I'm a fan of Victorinox.

Nothing against Leatherman though, many of their products look very nice indeed.

  • I have read online victorinox are better quality than leatherman.

I am in the market for a multitool. Was interested in particularly leatherman juice series due to nice pliers, but after reading bad things about the juice I'm now looking for a victorinox handyman. Leatherman tools looks so sturdy but victorinox are better quality I guess.

  • For starters, forget the home brand multi-tools. Every single one I've tried has been at best a cheap copy of the two brand names you've mentioned. Not worth it.

Secondly, you have the warranty around the wrong way. Leatherman is 25 years warranty, Victorinox is lifetime.

Which I'd recommend comes down to what you mainly use it for:

-If you do a lot of plier-based work, I'd recommend a Leatherman. Which Leatherman depends on what size, budget and tools you are after. My picks from the current Leatherman range are:

Rebar- quite compact but a good selection of tools, replacable wire cutters in plier head

Wave- best selling Leatherman. Great selection of tools, main blades are able to be opened without opening the whole tool, has bit driver that can take various screwdriver bits

Surge- big, heavy multi-tool that can pretty much do anything

-If you can live without pliers, I'd go a standard Swiss Army knife. Much easier / more comfortable to carry, and cheaper. My picks are:

Ranger- still 'pocketable' but a good selection of tools

SwissChamp- contains pretty much all the tools you can get on a Swiss Army knife, but on one knife

Note, the SwissChamp techically has 'pliers' but they are pretty useless in my experience.
Also note, Victorinox make a multitool similar to the Leatherman called the Swisstool. They are pretty good, but I prefer the Leatherman tools for functionality and cost.

Source: I own every single tool listed above. What can I say, some people collect baseball cards…

  • I got the Victorinox Swisstool X Plus - nothing comes close in terms of quality or versatility.

The Leathermans have questionable origins of their components, they are no longer 'Made in USA' and cannot legally stamp that on their products as they use components manufactured internationally. The theory is that most of their components are manufactured in Taiwan and then shipped to the US to be assembled. Unless someone knows someone that works there, this is as best information I've found.
