Backyard Cricket Too Noisy for My Neighbor? Thoughts?

So me and my brother play some backyard cricket for about 20-30mins a day. Mostly using a tennis ball but occasionally a leather ball.

When we hit the ball and it hits the fence, it makes a noise (especially for a leather ball).

Last year, we noticed the nails coming off on the fence, so we got it fixed by ourselves because we assumed it's probably because of the cricket and got the fence raised by another meter or so just to keep the ball flying in to the neighbours property.

Now I've got my neighbour rock up next to the fence while we are playing yelling at us saying that we are breaking the fence and making too much noisy all day everyday, all while spitting and punching the fence from the other end (which pulled out 6-7 nails on our side).

All I asked him to do was to take the issue with the council and we can take it from there.

I would like to know from all of you guys if this was the right thing to do?

And if there was something else that we could've done?

And when did backyard cricket become nuisance to people?

Thanks everyone

You raised the fence 1m - so how high now ?

    • I'd say about 3m or up now

  • Can we have a pic of your yard and the fence?

If he is punching the fence just tell him 'Stop making a noise punchign the fence old man' and keep on playing

    • I wish there was an easy way to post pictures up here directly.
But sort of a petty issue

I am definitely not the fun police (me and my kids play soccer and other games out the back) but I'm mindful that when the soccer ball bangs or clangs onto the colorbond fence it would be loud for the neighbours. If it was just noise of play etc I doubt it would bother people but 30 minutes of intermittent "crack" on the fence would amount (for some) to water torture; never knowing when the last cracking noise would happen.

Cricket with a tennis ball is fine, I'd reserve using the leather ball for the cricket nets down the park.

"All I asked him to do was to take the issue with the council and we can take it from there" - That's a passive way of telling him to go frack himself so I can imagine him getting defensive.

I won't tell you what you should or shouldn't do, but I realised 95% of the soccer contact was along the bottom half a metre of the fence, so I've grabbed a bunch of pallets for free, cut them in half and put them along the fence. The wood takes the force and doesn't make the loud "bang!" on the metal. Also keeps the wife happy cos the noise bugged her too.

    • Yea makes sense. We have more of a wooden fence. So I was thinking I'm gonna get some rubber things and nail it up to the bottom half like what we've done at our cricket club I guess

Our old neighbours kids used to belt the soccer ball into the colourbond fence. It was an unpleasant sound. It's worse when you're not expecting it.

Why don't you just go to the nearest park if you like playing cricket so much?

My brother is the laziest teenager you can find around my place.

But not too lazy to play 30 mins cricket daily?

Have you tried installing a net in your playing field to catch the ball and prevent it from hitting the fence? It doesn't even have to be a net… could be a tarp, or some other plastic sheeting.

This is a good idea! +1..

I like that option as well.

    • Drum skin perhaps?

    • 1 to the net thing. Or if you can get some waste heavy cloth/curtian and drape it across a line. If it is anything lighter, pin it down at the bottom.

Has the plus side of preventing the balls that head towards the fence from bouncing.

    play basketball instead.

I think cricket with a tennis ball is fair game, but leather is probably a no go. When you say leather I assume a proper Kookaburra leather ball (i.e. match ball)?

We used to have the neighbour's kids who would kick soccer balls into our shared (Colorbond) fence. You could hear it quite clearly when inside the house. As I got on ok with the neighbours, I raised it with them and they stopped immediately.

Our neighbour used to complain about the soccer ball hitting his colourbond fence. Tried to get the kids to avoid it by kicking the other way a bit, but that failed. A few star pickets and a bit of mesh, dog mesh I think it was called made a fence in front of the garden in front of the fence. Didn't lose any yard space luckily. The mesh was about 600mm off the fence. It worked great, but the pin the grumpy old neighbour started complaining when the ball hit the other fence.

We don't live there any more, his attitude brought forward our moving plans by a few years but it's for the best. Love the new place.
